SAFETY: Even though its just a candle you are dealing with fire so please be safe. Don’t do it outside if there is any wind. Don’t do it on the ground. Find a safe clear surface. We don’t suggest doing it inside but if you do make sure there is good ventilation.

Instructions

The simplified instructions are as follows below. If you prefer to do a more detailed ceremony with greater explanations and a nice handout you may purchase our 99 cent kit above. It comes with a detailed Leader Sheet.

Each person needs a pencil, some strips of paper and a full sheet of blank paper. They are to write the things that they feel are holding them back on each strip of paper, one per strip. These can be things such as anger, a health issue, a bad habit etc. Anything negative they would like to get rid of.  After they write it down they hold the paper to the candle flame and light it on fire then drop it into the bowl and watch it burn. They continue doing this until they can think of nothing else to write about.

They then take their blank sheet of paper, or the Positive Future sheet from the kit, and write down everything they hope for the new year.  Once the ashes have cooled they should be buried. If there are just a very few they can be blown to the wind!

The basic supplies you need for the ceremony are a metal or glass bowl, a candle, some paper and pencils.

As soon as the paper catches fire they then drop it into the bowl and watch it burn up. They continue this until they can think of no more issues or negative things to write down.  Let go of all the stuff that’s holding you back & start the New Year fresh with a fun burning bowl ceremony! Being thankful can be tricky when life gets hard. Make a gratitude token for any age to remind us how lucky we are when we need it most! Free printables.

Being thankful can be difficult when life gets in the way and the daily grind gets us down. Even teens and kids get stressed out with school and chores. Our Gratitude Tokens can help!  Well, we have two printable versions that work for adults, teens and kids alike to help everyone remember the wonderful things in their life on those days when they forget.  You can make either a “Let Gratitude Grow Flower” or a “Here Comes the Sun”. Print them, fill out the answer on the back and put them on a string, key chain, or ribbon. Then get your token to remind you just how lucky you are when you need it most!  If you’d like more gratitude ideas check our very popular Encourage Thankfulness with Gratitude Stones and our A Thankful Heart, A 30 Day Gratitude Challenge, also with awesome printables!

Being Thankful Reminder Token Supplies

  • Printables Below
  • Small hole punch I prefer a 1/8″ size for string.  A regular size will work but the hole may need to be punched a bit further up into the petal or raindrop.
  • String or Chain or Key Ring that snaps open
  • White Cardstock  This is what I keep in stock at home. Its 110 lb very bright so its heavy. You can buy smaller packs that are not quite as heavy though I do like heavier weight cardstock for this type for project.

Free Token Printables

The packet also comes with a page each of blanks in case you want to come up with your own questions.

We'll show you how to stop smoking in 3 weeks with only 3 minutes a day using simple acupressure! Print out our pocket card and see if it works for you!blank630x20We'll show you how to stop smoking in 3 weeks with only 3 minutes a day using simple acupressure! Print out our pocket card and see if it works for you! This article explains how to stop smoking using simple acupressure! It’s worked for many people and just might help you! One thing for sure is its too easy not to at least give it a try! Acupressure is an ancient healing scientific art developed in Asia over 5,000 years ago and is actually a predecessor to Acupuncture. Acupuncture and acupressure use the same points, but acupuncture employs needles, while acupressure uses gentle but firm pressure. The fingers or other objects are used to press points on the surface of the skin to stimulate the body’s natural self-curative abilities. When these points are pressed, they release muscular tension and promote the circulation of blood and the body’s life force energy to aid healing.

How It Works

We'll show you how to stop smoking in 3 weeks with only 3 minutes a day using simple acupressure! Print out our pocket card and see if it works for you!Acupressure is based on the body having 14 “meridians” that carry energy throughout it. These meridians start at your fingertips and connect to the brain and then go outward from there. Think of your body as a plumbing system full of inter-connected pipes. If a pipe gets blocked, it slows down the water rushing through the system. You may have a block in one place that causes a problem further down the line. It is the same with your body’s meridians.

Acupressure removes obstructions in your body’s energy system allowing it to flow the way it should, thus removing the specific problems associated with a specific blockage. That is why pressing on certain points can alleviate problems in other areas of the body. Many times you will notice that a specific point is extremely tender. This means there’s a problem in that meridian.

blank630x20How to Stop Smoking

IMPORTANT: It is not necessary to have your “last cigarette” and then start. The desire to continue smoking should automatically begin to slowly disappear to allow you to naturally stop on your own. All you need is a positive attitude and consistency to do the program daily for three weeks. You should not have normal withdrawal symptoms due to the nature of acupressure. Some people experience excessive sweating. You should drink plenty of water during your treatment.

We'll show you how to stop smoking in 3 weeks with only 3 minutes a day using simple acupressure! Print out our pocket card and see if it works for you!

POINT #1: Proper placement is very important. This point is inside the ear rim on the front wall of the inner ear towards the front of the face. (Not on the rim itself.) Insert tool as shown and press firmly for 30 seconds. Repeat on other ear.

POINT #2: This point is directly on ridge or rim of the lower ear at the highest point. It is situated in the center of the small mound that sticks up. Press firmly for 30 seconds. Repeat on other ear.

WARNING: 30 seconds is recommended as doing it longer can make you dizzy. You can do it up to 60 seconds per point if you do not get dizzy.

RwaterRESULTS: With this treatment you should either have no desire for cigarettes or else they will begin tasting very unpleasant to you. Due to the signals that acupressure gives the brain, the only possible side effect you might experience is an increase in sweating.

REMEMBER: Drink lots of water, as this helps flush the toxins out and increases success of the program. It’s suggested that you use no other method to stop smoking while doing the acupressure program.

blank630x20The best thing about this quick, yummy & healthy stir fry recipe is there's no measuring! Grab the veggies you like, some "special sauce" & your chopsticks!blank630x20

The best thing about this quick, yummy & healthy stir fry recipe is there’s no measuring! Grab your favorite veggies, some “special sauce” a few peanuts as garnish & your chopsticks!  It only takes about 15 minutes to make.  Served with a side of brown rice and you can eat as much as you like. You won’t find a much healthier version.  The sauce used is made by Panda Express (yep, the fantastic restaurant!) You can buy it in many stores. It comes in a variety of flavors. Kung Pao was used with this one and it’s zero fat which doesn’t hurt!

Another healthy recipe that would complement this wonderful dish is our Baked Egg Rolls and for dessert some Healthy No Bake Cookies!

These amounts make a huge one person serving or 2 or 3 smaller servings. The amounts you add can vary as can the veggies.

Zojirushi Rice Cooker aWe use brown rice with our stir fry as it’s one of  the healthier types. It does, however, take a long time to cook. If you cook rice regularly as we do it pays to invest in a Zojirushi rice cooker. This little machine is one of my best and most time saving purchases and it cooks rice PERFECT every time!

All you do is place your rice and water into the cooker, close the lid and turn it on. It’s hands off cooking and it alerts you with a little Melody when the rice is done. It will keep it warm until you’re ready to use it!blank630x20

PROS

  • Cooks rice perfect every time.
  • Very easy cleanup with non-stick removable container.
  • Hands off cooking.
  • Alerts when completed.
  • Keeps Rice Warm.
  • Retractable Cord
  • Carry Handle

CONS

  • Pricey. However, you definitely get what you pay for in this case. We’ve had ours for 6 years and its going strong.

This natural skin glue not only closes wounds that would need stitches but it heals the skin itself so there is no scaring and it does so very quickly.blank630x20This natural skin glue not only closes wounds that would need stitches but it heals the skin itself so there is no scaring.  And it does it quickly. We keep this kit on hand at all times along with our cayenne tincture to stop bleeding and heart attacks and strokes. Whether you are at a place that you can’t get stitches or you simply choose to do them yourself, this method is simple and painless.

This natural skin glue not only closes wounds that would need stitches but it heals the skin itself so there is no scaring and it does so very quickly. The specific herbs used heal the skin in addition to allowing the wound to close, hence no scars.  This information comes from my herbalist friend who also saved my son’s finger when the doctors would have removed it, by healing it of MRSA. She’s used it many times through the years including gluing someones finger tip back on.

I’ll admit I’ve held off on writing this article as I was waiting someone in the family to get a wound I could use as an example to photograph.  But alas my family has been wound-less for quite some time… knock on wood.  I’ll add photos  if that occasion every arises.  Grab our printable instruction card below to add to the kit.

DISCLAIMER: Please be wise. If its a huge gaping wound, see a doctor if you can. Though it’s able to be used for larger wounds, I suggest you use it only for  smaller cuts and wounds that might need stitching.

Skin Glue Supplies

The skin glue requires very specific ingredients which can be purchased online or at various stores.  Regular tape and bandages can be used but Steri Strips are best. You can find both herbs in powdered form on eBay at the links below. This is where we purchased ours.

You can also easily powder the leaf kind yourself with a mini coffee grinder, all of which can be purchased on Amazon at the links below.

REMAINING INGREDIENTS

blank630x20Mixing Instructions

Make fresh for each wound. You can place the dry herbs in a jar and then add other ingredients when needed. Any left over mixture can be stored in fridge and then thinned with wheat germ oil and used up to a month later.  You will be reapplying it daily for a while.

  • 1 part powdered comfrey leaf
  • 1/2 part powdered lobelia
  • 1 part honey

Mix the above ingredients. Add a little wheat germ oil until its a good consistency, pasty but not too thick or thin.

EXAMPLE FOR A SMALL WOUND

1 tsp powdered comfrey, 1/2 tsp powdered lobelia, 1 tsp honey. Wheat germ oil added till pasty but not too thin, about 6 to 10 drops.

blank630x20

How To Use

Fill the wound with the mixture. Whatever side its gaping try to seal towards the wound not away from it using the Steri Strips or close and tape or bandage. Don’t touch it  for 24-48 hours. Then remove the strips or bandages and add more skin glue. DO NOT REMOVE THE OLD GLUE just add more. Do this until healed.

If you struggle to find clarity and inner peace, the answers can be as close as the nearest park, trail or field. Learn how to find peace in nature. blank630x20Written by Roy Rivers

by.roy.riversThough they don’t struggle with it quite as much as adults, even children need inner peace in their lives. When I was growing up in Arkansas, like many kids, I loved playing outdoors. We lived in the country so I generally had a good deal of open spaces and wooded areas to roam in. But it was a bit more than just typical childhood pleasure that drew me outside. From my earliest memories I felt a strong connection to the outdoors. I quickly learned at a young age that it was also a place I could find comfort in.

blank630x20An 8 Year Old Learns the Peace of Nature

If you struggle to find clarity and inner peace, the answers can be as close as the nearest park, trail or field. Learn how to find peace in nature.

Me as a Kid

When I was 8 years old, and without consulting me, my family decided that I should get baptized. I didn’t fully grasp the situation, however, I couldn’t swim and I was afraid of the water so this idea truly scared me. One Saturday morning I learned that my brother-in-law Monte was on his way over and the family was going to take me to do the deed. As soon as I saw an opening I grabbed a little jacket and I high tailed it out into the woods and holed up in one of my favorite hiding places. I waited until it was getting close to dark before I went back home, avoiding the baptism that day. (Though they did catch me later!) But the entire time I was hiding, it was like I could hear voices of reason from the forest and trees talking to me about what I was doing, why I was avoiding the baptism and why I felt like it was an important thing for them to ask me if I wanted to be baptized. It was a strong sense of peace for a frightened little boy and as a result of those very clear feelings that I had, I knew that anytime I needed help or answers, nature was there for me.

As the years went by it was a tremendous comfort to know that when I was feeling troubled by something that the open arms of nature were waiting for me and through the years it has served me well more times than I can count. When I would have problems at home or school or issues with friends, I could go out and think about things and receive insights and new ways to look at them.blank630x20

Conversing With Nature. Literally.

If you struggle to find clarity and inner peace, the answers can be as close as the nearest park, trail or field. Learn how to find peace in nature. As an adult I grab my walking stick (one I carved myself) and go on hikes regularly on our local trails. I’m a bit of an unusual hiker. I talk out loud while I hike. I may just talk about what’s going on in my life in general, as I would to a friend. If I’ve got a particular problem that I’m trying to get clarity on I’ll say “Here’s the problem that I’m having. “And then I explain it. Then as I go along, I listen. The thoughts that come to me as a whisper in my head are what I perceive is a higher force talking to me. You can call it God, Father, Mother Nature or whatever fits in with your own beliefs. But for me it is very real.

“As I looked out across the way, in a very large tree was a huge hawk looking right at me. It was almost as if it was waiting for me to make eye contact…”

One time recently I was having a particularly tough day so I decided to go on a hike. As I went up the trail I kept stopping and looking around because I thought I heard something. But I didn’t see a bit of wildlife or anyone else on the trail. I remember thinking, “Where the heck is everyone?” I usually run into folks now and then or see various critters but there was complete stillness and I thought “I’d love to see an eagle soaring about now.”

I walked into the next clearing and rested for a minute to catch my breath. As I looked out across the way, in a very large tree was a huge hawk looking right at me. It was almost as if it was waiting for me to make eye contact and when I did it jumped into flight. It flew in several big circles over me and then soared for a bit looking right at me. I said out loud “Wow. Thank you.” It’s things like this that I take very personally.

The information I receive on my forays into nature might not be the overall answer to my problem, but it’s always clarity to some facet of it. Something that allows me to calm down and see the different sides and vantage points and how I sit in the middle of it all. No matter what the issue, every time that I go out there’s something I receive. Every time.

blank630x20How To Connect

I believe anyone can connect with nature and get answers using the following concepts.

  1. Find a place you can go to, where there is some type and feeling of nature, even a small amount.
  2. Empty your mind and focus on what’s right in front of you. Feel what you’re feeling, notice the smells, notice the sounds in the wind and the feel of it on your face. Feel your leg muscles as you walk. Be highly attuned to everything around you and shut off the non-stop idle chatter many of us have going on in our heads at any given moment.
  3. Ask your questions. Either speak them or just ask them in your mind. Then be still and listen. Insights will be subtle for most. One small insight can be the answer you’re looking for.

blank630x20What If You Live in the City?

Finding Clarity and Inner Peace in Nature 5Though I grew up in the country, we moved a lot, sometimes to less rural areas. But there was always some place, even in the city, that I could go to. There were large vacant lots that were grown up, or parks. There will always be little places of nature here and there.  Don’t think this only works if you have a forest to roam If you struggle to find clarity and inner peace, the answers can be as close as the nearest park, trail or field. Learn how to find peace in nature. or a mountain to climb.  Even in the middle of the city with cars buzzing around, you can sit on a bench and look up at the sky, watch the clouds, the birds and connect.

Because I’m such a fan of nature I’m also a believer in the good energy of crystals.  I placed one on the top of my hiking stick that I made so I would have it with me while I hiked. Carry a clear quartz crystal with you in your pocket or fanny pack when you hike for an added boost, especially if you live in the city!

If you struggle to find clarity and inner peace, the answers can be as close as the nearest park, trail or field. Learn how to find peace in nature. blank630x20Going into nature can feel like a breath of life. It’s naturally invigorating and cleansing and it’s a time you can feel a part of the entire planet.  But most importantly, it’s a place where an answer awaits in the stillness. All you have to do is ask the question.

The quote "We've child-proofed our home but they keep getting in" hangs in our home. We've got some good tips for those of you who also have boomerang kids.blank630x20

If you’ve got adult children living at home, you’re not alone. In fact, almost 40% of adult children do. (1) There are a lot of reasons for this: economy, saving for school etc. But the fact is many adult kids are moving back home so we might as well make the best of it. We’ve had our children live with us at various times after adulthood and in all honesty we were happy to do it. But there are certain inherent issues that can crop up with the situation. So we’ve got a few pointers to help save your sanity and keep your relationship intact.

For more tips on relationships read How To Diffuse an Argument.  You can also get our free high resolution frame-able quote at the bottom of the post. It comes in two sizes. 5″x7″ and 8″x10″.

It can be difficult drawing the line between our children being kids and being adults. This means as parents it’s easy for us to overstep our bounds on what we should and should not try to control. Just as it can be hard for the parents to view kids as adults, it can also be hard for the kids to get out of “kid” mode where they expect things from you that you’ve always done.

In reality the rules should be simple and logical. Despite the fact that they’ll always be “your babies”,  they are adults and deserve the same autonomy any adult should have. However, you are no longer required to take care of them nor do you owe them. They are adults and need to act like it. They are in your home. So you get to call the shots. The key is to make them fair and reasonable.

It’s a great idea to write up a family contract of goals and expectations.

The quote "We've child-proofed our home but they keep getting in" hangs in our home. We've got some good tips for those of you who also have boomerang kids.THINGS YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO REQUIRE

  1. Discuss their goals and the length of the stay before they ever move in and what their plans are. Revisit that discussion every few weeks to make sure things are on track.
  2. They clean up after themselves. No ifs ands or buts.
  3. They pitch in on housework.
  4. Depending on the situation, they contribute financially. If they can’t, they do extra things around the house to compensate.

THINGS YOU DON’T HAVE A RIGHT TO REQUIRE

  1. What they do outside the home.
  2. Who their friends are.
  3. How late they stay out.
  4. If they go to church.
  5. What they wear.

The quote "We've child-proofed our home but they keep getting in" hangs in our home. We've got some good tips for those of you who also have boomerang kids.Respect them as another adult and don’t try to manipulate or force things on them that you would not force on another adult. By this point in their lives they have decided if they want to go to church, who their friends are, who they date etc. Setting up rules where you overstep your bounds will only harm your relationship.

Your rules should have to do with what affects your home and those in it. If they smoke and you don’t, then they do it outside. And you don’t give them a dirty look or make snide remarks when they do. If they drink and you don’t, you can request they not do it inside. You can also stipulate they may drink in the home but not be intoxicated.

The key is respect for another person’s rights unless it infringes on yours, just as you should do with anyone. If rules are broken, never get angry. Simply reiterate the rules and if they are broken constantly, then calmly explain they must move out. If rules were set ahead of time with consequence it should not be a surprise. Anger only tears relationships apart, so always be respectful and act with integrity.

Treating your kids with love and respect and not judging choices they make will go far to keeping a strong bond of love and trust between you and make living together a lot easier.

Learn the down and dirty about why glass water bottles are better for you and the dangers of using plastic to drink from our store food in. One word: BPAblank630x20

Why use glass water bottles? Because much of the plastic we use for food containers and bottled water is made from dangerous chemicals. The problem being that over time they can escape into food and liquid.  If you’ve ever put anything into a plastic container that had held say onions for example, you’ll quickly learn this basic concept.  Your food will take on the flavor of onions.  (I can verify that onion flavored cake is not all that great.)  If you drink water regularly, which you should, you might consider tossing the plastic bottles and switching to glass.

Plastics made from polycarbonate resin, which a great many are, can leach bisphenol-A (BPA), a strong endocrine disrupter, into its contents. Studies show that BPA negatively affects reproductive organs, such as the breasts and prostate, as well as causing potential heart problems. As a side note BPA is also used in the protective coatings that line the inside of many metallic beverage containers.

If you want to customize your water bottle check out our fun post on How to Etch Glass in 5 Minutes.

blank630x20Reasons Why Glass Water Bottles are Better

  1. Water in glass tastes better  because it’s non-permeable and won’t absorb color or odor.
  2. Plastic is bad for the earth. It takes over 500 years for plastic bottles to break down.
  3. Glass is BPA free.
  4. Glass can be washed and used repeatedly saving money over time.
  5. Glass can be used for hot or cold drinks.
  6. Glass maintains the temperature much more effectively than plastic.

blank630x20

You can use glass bottles from things purchased at the store after they are emptied, or purchase special bottles for this purpose. My favorite choice for drinking around the house is a pint or quart canning jar. If you’re concerned about breakage just use thicker glass bottles that are resistant to breaking. Many water bottles you purchase  come with sleeves to prevent breakage if dropped.

We've deal with our share of troubled teens. Runaways, drugs, police, court dates and more. But there is an end and the adult that emerges can be amazing! blank630x20
Our oldest daughter came to visit recently. (You may have seen some of her post contributions.)  She lives in Arizona We've deal with our share of troubled teens. Runaways, drugs, police, court dates and more. But there is an end and the adult that emerges can be amazing!with her husband, son, 2 dogs and 5 cats. She’s an amazing woman who I admire as much as I’ve admired anyone on the planet and she is crazy talented.
Now let’s go back a few years.  29  runaways at age 16, many out of state. Drugs, alcohol, police, youth facilities, car chases, pregnancy, court appearances, and weeks on end not knowing if our child was alive or dead. She was our troubled teen and needless to say, it was difficult times for Roy and I which also included several lost jobs because when Jenny was on the run Roy could not be out looking for her.

dotted.divider

Yet here she is, this incredible young woman who not only grew from her experiences but taught her mom and dad along the way. She is honest, empathetic, compassionate, and wise beyond her years. She also has a crazy sense of humor.

We've deal with our share of troubled teens. Runaways, drugs, police, court dates and more. But there is an end and the adult that emerges can be amazing!During those sleepless nights as parents, we never saw this person coming out of those troubled times. Nor did we see how close our relationship would be. And though at the time we would have opted out at any given moment, we would not trade any piece of the person she is because of those experiences and I’m pretty sure she wouldn’t either.

When I think back on my life it does appear to be the really hard times that I grew and learned from. That seems to be part of the human condition as a quite I once saw validated: “Pain Instructs”.  It also seems to be how we learn to be less judgmental. We only put ourselves in another’s shoes when we’ve had to walk in them ourselves. Like I said, on this journey, Roy and I also learned a great deal and became better people.  Roy talked about one such lesson in “How I Learned to Never Judge a Book By It’s Cover.”  Below are a few of the tips that we attribute to why things turned out so well for all concerned.

blank630x20Tips for ParentsTroubled Teens Make Awesome Adults - Hope for Struggling Parents 10

  • Know your kids. Know who their friends are, where they are, what they are studying in school etc.
  • Spend at least 15 minutes a day talking with and focusing only on them, without judgement.
  • Give unconditional love. No matter what they do you love them, even if you don’t love their actions.
  • When you have to discipline do it out of purpose, not anger.
  • Shower your kids with love and acceptance every chance you get.
  • Do not yell or use physical violence in any situation. Walk away until you can be calm.
  • Do not be condescending.  Be as logical as you can. And yes, that’s hard to do.
  • Never, ever give up.

Our daughter told us in later years that even when things were at their worst she knew we were there for her. It didn’t matter what she had done she could come to us when she needed too. We were her safe haven. This is not about condoning bad behavior. This is about unconditional love for your child.  Some of these kids will experience incredibly harsh aspects of life.  Knowing that mom and dad are there no matter what they do, will save them.

blank630x20Dangers

Obviously there are some serious dangers depending on what your child is doing.  All you can do is the best you can to keep them safe. (Roy used to nail her windows shut so she could not get out at night!) The worst can of course happen. But by far the largest portion of these kids grow up without serious damage. Keep that in mind.blank630x20

Final Thoughts

There is indeed great hope for those of you who struggle with your own teens. This time will  pass and some amazing growth can be had along the way for you and your child. People, like clay, are sculpted by their experiences.  Roy said something years back that I’ve always remembered.   “Our choices can teach us who we are and who we ar not.”   We’ve found that both are incredibly important.

NOTE ON ESSENTIAL OILS

I am not affiliated with any brand of oil and you will find Young Living, Doterra, Plant Therapy and others in my herb closet. You can use whatever brand you like. However, the higher quality oils require less due to how they are manufactured. (Hence why they tend to cost more.) For brands like Doterra you only need about 1/3rd the amount of drops to be effective. Compare sizes, costs with drops to decide which one to buy that fits your budget.

I have a close friend who is a trained herbalist and creates her own salves etc. This is what she told me:

“One to two drops of a Doterra in 8 oz. [or other high quality oil] is plenty for use as an anti-bacterial. You need five to ten for a cheaper brand. For example, for a healing product you would have to use 60 -70 drops per gallon with other brands. With Doterra you would only use 12-15 drops.”

blank630x20Ingredient Option Details

Aloe Vera Gel: The Aloe Vera plant is wonderful for using in hand sanitizer because of its powerful antioxidant and antibacterial benefits. Plus it’s great for the skin and is also widely used or healing burns. This will make your sanitizer thick but it’s optional.

Tea Tree Oil: Also known as melaleuca oil, this is one of the most powerful and safe antibacterials available. (Natural or otherwise.) There are other oils that have the same property but I always use tea tree. Why? Because it will heal MRSA and did so for my son saving him the loss of his finger.

Distilled Water: You can use tap water for mixing your sanitizer but if the mixture is not used up within a few weeks it can start to putrefy. Tap water is filled with microbes and possible contaminants. Distilled water has been stripped of everything so there is nothing to “go bad”. Hence why it’s used in all herbal creations.

Containers: You can purchase various types of small empty containers at most stores including dollar stores. Or just use an empty container from something else. Because this mixture is not exact and is very forgiving you can make a larger batch easily by adjusting the amounts. It doesn’t matter if you use 10 or 15 drops of tea tree oil. It will work great!

As is a good idea for anything you’ve not used before, test these items separately on a small patch of skin.

With our green smoothie recipe you'll learn how to easily take in large amounts of dark greens with one quick and delicious drink. Your body will love you!Green Smoothie Recipe : Short Version

In a blender add:

  • 1 1/2 cup water
  • 4 to 6 ice cubes
  • 1 full head romaine (bottom trimmed off)
  • 1 huge handful baby spinach
  • 1 large frozen ripe banana
  • Blend till smooth and creamy. Makes 1 quart for 1 person. Drink immediately.   If it’s not sweet enough add a little honey.

blank630x20More Options and Details

This recipe is very forgiving and you can add or take away all kinds of things. Try to keep this goal in mind: getting a large amount of nutrient rich  dark greens into your body.  You should drink a FULL QUART of this at once. Super easy to do because it’s so yummy.blank630x20

screenshot382-sep-27-07-13After you’ve gone through our ideas below you might want to hop on over to Positive Health Wellness site and check out their “All In One Guide To Making A Green Smoothie“. It’s  filled with even more great ideas and info on this topic!

blank630x20TOOLS

Good Blender. After burning out 2 or 3 normal blenders we finally invested in a Vita-Mix many years back.  They last forever and will blend anything. Plus they do a lot more than just small.grinderblend stuff, including grinding flour! However, those are not in everyone’s budget so just make sure your blender can blend frozen fruit.

Mini Coffee Grinder (optional) I use this exact one for grinding my flax seed. It’s also very handy for grinding nuts, herbs etc.

THE GREEN SMOOTHIE RECIPE BASE

Try to use organic greens if affordable and available.

1 1/2 Cup water with 4-6 ice cubes

Frozen Bananas. Using frozen bananas is what makes your drink sweet, rich and creamy.  Freeze them extra ripe The riper they are the sweeter they are. We buy bananas in bulk, peel them and then cut them into 1″ to 2 ” pieces and freeze in 1 gallon freezer bags, one layer thick.  Each day we grab what we need for our smoothies.  I typically use enough pieces to make 1 full banana. The more you use the thicker and sweeter it gets!

Romaine Lettuce, a full head with the bottom cut off.

Baby Spinach. As spinach is very tame in flavor use a HUGE handful!

OPTIONAL ADDITIONS

A lot of what you use in your green smoothie recipe is done to taste. So go easy on things until you decide what amounts you like best.

Kale  is a super food, meaning it’s one of the most nutrient rich foods on the planet. If you can use it, do so. Keep in mind it does have a  very strong flavor so I only use a small handful. That way you don’t taste it.

small.flax.seedFlax seed.  This is another super food and  I always add 1 TB of ground flax seed to each smoothie.  Never buy this pre-ground because as soon as you grind it, it  starts losing its nutrients. I have a tiny electric coffee grinder that sits on my counter, as mentioned above. It gets used daily for this purpose. You could also use flax oil in place of the ground seeds. Flax gives you those Omega 3’s our bodies so desperately need which is why I add it to all our smoothies. FYI: The outer shell of the tiny flax seed is so tough it cannot be digested which is why you have to grind it.

Cacao Powder We use this when we want a chocolate smoothie. Or just toss in a little cocoa powder.

Psyllium Husk You can add 1 tsp of this into your smoothie. I mainly use it because it’s an item I keep on hand all the time. It’s pure fiber. If you choose to use less bananas this will help make your drink thick.

Other Frozen Fruits: Blue berries (another super food and it makes your drink a pretty purple).  Frozen strawberries are great also. Remember, frozen fruits make your drink thicker.

We’ve also used 1/2 a fresh mango on occasion. Gives it a wonderful flavor and adds to the sweetness.

SWEETENERS (IF NEEDED)

If you use plenty of ripe bananas your drink will be very sweet but if you use less you may want to use some added sweetness.  You can add in a small amount of honey, Stevia, agave nectar or Xylitol We’ve used every one of these at various times, my favorite being Xylitol due to it’s benefits to teeth. (See our post Kiss Your Dentist Goodbye!)   The protein powder below also sweetens your smoothie and you only need 1/2 scoop for 1 quart of smoothie.

With our green smoothie recipe you'll learn how to easily take in large amounts of dark greens with one quick and delicious drink. Your body will love you!SUN WARRIOR PROTEIN POWDER

This is completely optional and I only mention it because Roy and I have got spoiled using it the past year.  It’s a plant based ultra-nutritious powder.  Keep in mind you get high level of protein from dark greens so it’s not needed for that reason but it has other nutrients plus it’s sweetened with Stevia and comes in vanilla and chocolate. If you prefer to not add a lot of fruit into your green drink this does a wonderful job of sweetening and flavoring it.  We prefer the chocolate and we only use 1/2 a scoop per quart which is perfect.

Add positive energy into your food by cooking with spoons that have words on them. Easy to make, they are not only beautiful they are a great gift!blank630x20hidden.messages.of.waterEveryone can use a little more positive energy! You may or may not be familiar with New York Time’s best seller Dr. Masaru Emoto’s work surrounding water. His books, full of photos that you must see to believe, prove the power of words. If it works on water we figured why not food! (Goodness knows our American diet needs all the help it can get.)  You can paint or wood burn them. (If you paint them you need to cover them with a food safe sealant or polyurethane. Read details below. )

And even if you’re not into the whole “words are energy” thing they still make a beautiful gift! (Hand wash only.)

*IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT MARKERS & SEALANTS

If you decide to use markers you need to coat the spoons with sealant before drawing on them to help prevent bleeding. You also need to use a sealant afterwards so the markers do not get into your food. I did some research on this topic and what I was told by several people was that using a polyurethane coating to either dip or spray your spoons would work and would not be any more harmful than plastic food storage bags.  Do your own research and if its still a concern do the word burning instead!

Positive Energy Wooden Spoons Instruction

You can trace the patterns we provide onto your spoons or outline your own words. Go over the words with a wood burner.  If using markers coat your spoons with a food safe sealant first to help the markers to not bleed as much. Trace your words with markers then coat 2 or 3 times with the sealant allowing to dry in between.

Why it's important for you have your own special sanctuary or "happy place" that you can retreat too daily and some great simple ideas for creating one!blank630x20

Wheres Your Sanctuary - Creating Your Happy PlaceRemember when you were a kid and every so often a huge cardboard box would come into your possession? What happened? Why, you made a fort of course. Or a hideout, or a play house, or a rocket, or a boat or submarine or other happy place. The point being, you made something you could crawl into that was yours.

I’d decorate my box with markers and crayons and my dad would cut a door into it for me and then a small flap in the side to which a string was attached so I could open and close my window. This plain cardboard box was my sanctuary. It was a special place I could go that was all mine and it felt magical.

“A sanctuary is not so much a place as it is a mindset.”

I don’t care who you are or how old you might be, or what your station in life is. Everyone needs a place they can go to where they can step out of daily life and just relax. All of us need a place to recharge our batteries, where we feel safe and where we can do things that bring us joy whether it’s writing, drawing, reading, playing piano, exercising or just sitting and thinking. You need the equivalent of that cardboard box you crawled into as a little kid. It doesn’t have to cost a penny. It just has to give you that feeling.blank630x20

blank630x20Creating Your Happy Place

KEY COMPONENTS OF A SANCTUARY

  1. It’s somewhere you feel safe.
  2. It has things in it you enjoy.
  3. It has privacy.
  4. You’ve made the area special. (See “equipping your sanctuary” below.)
  5. You literally look forward to being there.
  6. You feel peace and joy in it.

blank630x20THINGS TO DO IN YOUR SANCTUARY
Mix and match as desired. Whatever you choose needs to give you a deep feeling of peace and pleasure.

  • Exercise
  • Read an engrossing novel.
  • Read poetry.
  • Watch a special show. (Not to be confused with typical TV watching.)
  • Write
  • Paint, draw, sculpt etc.
  • Look through a favorite magazine.
  • Journal
  • Hand write letters.
  • Yoga
  • Cooking (really special dishes)
  • Sing
  • Garden
  • Deep breathing.
  • Dance
  • Watch the sun rise or set.
  • Positive Affirmations
  • Spend special time with a dog or cat.
  • Manifest
  • Eat a special treat. i.e. A healthy muffin you love and a cup of herbal tea.

Why it's important for you have your own special sanctuary or "happy place" that you can retreat too daily and some great simple ideas for creating one!

blank630x20SANCTUARY LOCATIONS ( a few examples)

  • A special corner in a quiet room of your house.
  • The bathtub.
  • A spot in the back yard.
  • A special lane you enjoy walking down.
  • Your bedroom.
  • Your roof.
  • The local antique shop where you can get lost.
  • The local bookstore with coffee shop.
  • A local cafe.
  • Your treadmill.
  • Your tub where you enjoy soaking and relaxing. With candles of course.
  • Some find their Zen and peace by exercising. Walk, run, bike, do yoga etc.
  • Out in nature.
  • Help out at a homeless shelter, read to kids etc. Serving others can bring incredible peace of mind and joy.
  • For those who find your zen in cooking, the kitchen can be a sanctuary while cooking something extra special.
  • The dining room table for doing something you love. Just set aside the time and make it special while you’re there.
  • Any place at all that makes you feel peaceful being there.

Why it's important for you have your own special sanctuary or "happy place" that you can retreat too daily and some great simple ideas for creating one!

blank630x20EQUIPPING YOUR SANCTUARY
It’s important to make your sanctuary special in some small way.  Examples you can mix and match:

  • notebookIf you like to draw have a special pad of paper and pencils, paints etc.bookmark
  • If you like to read, use a very nice bookmark and/or book cover.  Maybe a small pretty notepad for writing thoughts it inspires.
  • If you like to write, get a special journal or writing pad for doing so, with an extra nice pen.
  • If you like to meditate, have some candles or incense.
  • If you like to listen to music, have that on hand.
  • owl.mugEnjoy a special treat while in your sanctuary. Maybe it’s a place where you look forward to enjoying a cup of herbal tea and a muffin.   Use a beautiful tea cup or mug for this time.
  • Place pictures  or framed quotes in your spot. Place a flower in a small vase there. Make it an area that is enticing to your eyes.
  • fanny.packIf your sanctuary is a walk down a beautiful lane or road, make the event into a ritual in some way. Wear a special pack equipped with small things such as a small notebook, chap stick,  a camera etc.
  • If your sanctuary is the bathtub where you look forward to soaking and relaxing or listening to music, make it special while bath.saltsyou’re in there. Light a candle or two, use special bath salts and lotions.
  • apronIf you’re someone who finds peace while exercising, wear special clothes that you feel good in. Hang a motivational poster than inspires you. Keep a pretty journal where you write your progress in. (Check out our Treadmill Nook for ideas!)
  • If you fine your joy while cooking, play music while you do it, wear a beautiful apron. Use a special wooden spoon set.

*Make sure if you’re using a space that others in the home also use that they know that during your sanctuary time you’re not to be disturbed.

blank630x20REMEMBER  this is not about doing things mindlessly. This is about filling yourself up with things that bring you deep joy and pleasure. That will be different for everyone. For example, for some it might be watching a special TV show because in their life they seldom get to watch TV or movies so it’s a unique event. If you did it all the time it would not be “special”. Get it?

blank630x20MY SANCTUARY

Why it's important for you have your own special sanctuary or "happy place" that you can retreat too daily and some great simple ideas for creating one! I love bedtime. I look forward to it every day. Because of this I’ve made going to bed a ritual and my bedroom is my sanctuary spot.  At night I brush my teeth, pull down the covers, turn on my nightstand light and fan (I sleep with a fan as I also love the wind.) Then I brush my teeth (I even have a ritual for that!), undress and crawl under my fluffy covers. Next to my bed is my Kindle and my iPhone both which have long charger cords that stay there. I grab my Kindle and read whatever I’m currently reading, which is usually several things. I’ll start with some non-fiction that I’m learning something from. Then I end with my current novel, reading until I almost fall asleep. Pure heaven. Even though going to bed is a typical thing everyone does, I’ve turned it into something very meaningful for me.

I recently did a Budget Bedroom Makeover in my bedroom to make it even more special. I used mostly things I had and it now not only feels like a sanctuary it looks like one.

walking.stickWhy it's important for you have your own special sanctuary or "happy place" that you can retreat too daily and some great simple ideas for creating one! When Roy needs peace and clarity he literally heads for the hills. He’s done this for years and years as he finds his solace in nature.  He’s had to adapt depending on where we lived but there is always some feeling of nature he can find even if it’s a park. Luckily we now have plenty of actual hiking spots close by.

A few years back he made his own walking stick to take with him. He created it from a branch that he sanded and painted. Then he added a crystal on top. Its beautiful.  After one of his walks he never fails to come back rejuvenated, peaceful and with much more clarity. blank630x20

JUST DO IT!

If you happen to be one of the lucky few whose life is calm and peaceful most of the time and you get to regularly do things you enjoy with ease, consider yourself blessed!  However, if your life is more typical with normal stresses it’s incredibly important to have these small times alone and to create your own happy place.

If all you have is the equivalent of a cardboard box you can still accomplish this because a sanctuary is not so much a place as it is a mindset. It matters not where it is as long as it feels special to you. So go find your sanctuary and visit it daily even if it’s just for a few minutes. You’ll be amazed at how you’ll come to treasure that time and what it does for you.

The Two Most Important Steps To Keeping Your Home Bug Free

No-Kill Natural Pest Control caulk#1 Keep them from getting in.  Plug and caulk all holes you can find. This takes some dedicated sleuthing. Check inside cupboards, especially under the sinks where the pipes enter through the wall. Check that your doors and windows don’t have gaps. You’d be amazed how many bugs you can keep out just by preventing them easy access.  Caulk is super cheap and you can get it in tubes you just squeeze out. This works great for smaller cracks.

biscuit-344899_640#2 Don’t leave food lying around. Food = bugs. If you eat in other places besides the dining room table or kitchen any crumbs left will draw insects. Vacuum regularly and keep your counters wiped clean at all times.No-Kill Natural Pest Control wipe

If despite all your best efforts you still have little unwanted visitors, we’ve got some humane and inexpensive ways to get rid of them. All of the methods should work immediately.

Getting Rid of Roaches

No-Kill Natural Pest Control roach

Bay Leaves: Purchase bay leaves in the cooking section. If you buy them as whole leaves you want to crush them up to work best. Just sprinkle the crushed leaves where

the roaches are. Place them under sinks and in corners.

Catnip: Grab some catnip in the local pet section. Sprinkle it in areas where roaches are, again, in corners and under cabinets. Iowa State University scientists found that catnip is 100 times more effective than DEET at repelling roaches.

No-Kill Natural Pest Control spiderGetting Rid of Spiders

Peppermint Oil: Spiders will avoid this stuff. Fill a spray bottle with water and add in 10 to 15 drops of oil until it smells very minty. Spray the water in cracks and gaps where the spiders enter. You can also place drops of peppermint oil on cotton balls and put those in areas where spiders enter.

White Distilled Vinegar:Place 3 parts vinegar and 1 part water in a spray bottle. Spray and saturate counter tops, cupboards, window frames, door frames etc. Let sit 30 minutes and wipe up the extra, leaving the surface still damp. Allow remaining vinegar to dry. SMELL: if you don’t like the smell of vinegar it will dissipate after a few hours.   Respray as needed for your home but this should keep the spiders out a good long while. (Also works for ants. See below.) You’ll quickly learn how often you need to spray to keep your home spider free.

No-Kill Natural Pest Control antGetting Rid of Ants

Cinnamon: This repels ants wonderfully as it disrupts the pheromone trail they use to navigate. If you sprinkle it around the edges of places they come in and under cabinets, the ants will not cross over it or come into areas surrounded by it.  If you have ants, use it and see what quickly happens!

Chalk: This contains calcium carbonate which repels ants (and slugs). You can use regular chalk sticks to draw a line around any place you do not want them to cross.

White Distilled Vinegar: The same as for spiders. Place 3 parts vinegar and 1 part water in a spray bottle. Spray and saturate counter tops, cupboards, window frames, door frames etc. Let the mixture sit for about 30 minutes and wipe up the excess but leave the surface a little damp. Allow remaining vinegar mixture to dry. That’s it! Respray as needed for your home but this should keep the ants out a good long while. You’ll quickly learn how often you need to spray to keep your home ant free. SMELL: if you don’t like the smell of vinegar it will dissipate after a few hours.blank630x20

This is a natural Bartholin Cyst home treatment that works! Learn how to easily and safely treat a Bartholin cyst at home with great success. blank630x20

This post is for the gals and if you have this condition, you definitely know what it is. A Bartholin cyst is very painful and difficult to treat and many women have had little success with traditional medicine. Well, we’ve got a Bartholin Cyst home treatment that is inexpressive and easy to do and it works.

This treatment was used by someone I know personally and I followed along with them during the entire duration of their condition. I’ll tell you the details of her experience and how she was able to virtually cure her Bartholin cyst naturally. As usual, we remind you that everyone is different and your success may differ. However, this is an inexpensive and very safe treatment to test. It’s certainly much less painful and intrusive than the standard medical treatments which many times don’t help at all.

Bartholin Cyst: What It Is (The nitty gritty details)

The Bartholin glands are in a woman’s genitals located on both sides of the folds of the labia that surround the vagina. These glands secrete a small amount of fluid. If a Bartholin duct gets blocked, fluid builds up in the gland and it creates a cyst. These cysts can typically be pea sized to marble size and are generally not treated as long as there are no unpleasant symptoms. They can also go away by themselves unless they are so large they cause discomfort. However, the cyst can becomes infected and it will slowly grow larger up to the size of an egg and become very painful. The typical treatment is to cut the cyst open under local anesthesia and drain it which is incredibly painful to have done. But as they seldom heal the problem, it tends to come back requiring further draining.  Note: The following is a drawing of the location of the cyst and how it looks.  (Graphic)

Symptoms of a cyst that is not infected
• A lump in the area.
• Redness or swelling in the area.
• Discomfort when you sit, walk, or have sex.

Symptoms of an infected cyst include:
• It becomes more and more painful.
• Fever and chills.
• Swelling in the area.
• The cyst can drain.

Stress is the #1 contributor to Bartholin Cysts and a poor diet is the #2 contributor (as in lots of meat, dairy, sugar and processed foods.) blank630x20

Actual Experience

My friend who experienced this went to her doctor numerous times as her cyst kept coming back. She had it drained four times which was a very unpleasant experience. The only other option she was given was to have the duct surgically closed, because having it repeatedly drained will eventually lead to scar tissues building up.  However, she had read about many women who had that done and they said it caused other problems afterwards and the cyst even came back on occasion. So her quest was to find a way to naturally heal it.

Here are a few things she found that were suggested that she tried and  that did not work:

  • Drawing Salve
  • Epsom Salts baths
  • Sillica
  • Tea Tree and Lavender Oil
  • Homeopathics

The Cure

My friend finally read an in-depth article on using Apple Cider Vinegar. The information she found said it would take three full months to work. She hated the taste of vinegar so she bought Vinegar capsules and took two capsules three times a day.  It was at the exact three month mark when her cyst went down tremendously from the size of a quarter to the size of a dime and her symptoms stopped. Though a small cyst was still there the infection was gone. She continues to take the vinegar capsules. Her next step is to change her diet to a more plant based one which will most likely remove it completely.

NOTE: Along with the vinegar she was supposed to take 1tb of the Black Strap Molasses once a day, but after a few days gave it up as it tasted awful.

WHAT TO TAKE

  • Apple Cider Vinegar Capsules,  2 Capsules 3x a day with meals   (The link is the exact brand she used.)
  • Take a daily Vitamin C or drink orange juice as the citrus helps your body absorb the vinegar.
  • Black Strap Molasses 1 TB a day (She didn’t take this,  but her cyst still went down. It was strongly suggested in the remedy she had researched.)

Remember, everyone is different and your results may differ. Make sure to be patient. It takes THREE MONTHS to work. But it’s virtually painless and simple to do.  Good luck and be well!blank630x20

Despite my love for the digital age there are occasions when I realize some things have been lost. One of those is the Sears Catalog at Christmas time.blank630x20

I love the digital age. There’s not a day goes by that I’m not grateful to be alive during the 21st century. We literally have the world at our fingertips, with any information we need just a click away. But there are rare occasions when I realize some things have been lost in our computerized world. One of those is the Sears catalog.blank630x20

Despite my love for the digital age there are occasions when I realize some things have been lost. One of those is the Sears Catalog at Christmas time.blank630x20

Despite my love for the digital age there are occasions when I realize some things have been lost. One of those is the Sears Catalog at Christmas time.

In the 80’s and 90’s, like many households, we received our catalog in the mail at least once a year. It was overflowing with goodies for adults and children alike. But as a kid, one of the great joys of the holiday season was grabbing a pen, finding a quiet spot and sitting down with that thick tome of wonder as we slowly turned each page, methodically circling the things we wanted Santa to bring. Though we never got everything we circled, (because we circled everything) there was excitement, anticipation and hope. The activity itself was the pleasure.

Despite my love for the digital age there are occasions when I realize some things have been lost. One of those is the Sears Catalog at Christmas time. That tradition carried on with my own children and one year I snapped a photo of all of them lying on the floor with the catalog in the middle, as our oldest, Charles, turned the pages.

Time went by, progress was made. We were so busy with our noses in our gadgets we hardly noticed, but the catalogs stopped coming. A small bit of magic was gone.

I readily admit I can now quickly find online everything Sears and any other store sells, including digital catalogs where I can virtually turn pages. And let’s not forget the many trees that are spared from not printing those huge volumes. And yes, it’s basically corporate America trying to sell us their latest and greatest stuff. But that tangible catalog was more than those things. It was tradition entwined with promise and delight. And despite all those valid points, I still feel a tiny ache inside at this little slice of my past that’s gone and all the kids won’t get to experience it.

Luckily Christmas, in and of itself, has a special enchantment and there’s a never ending variety of ways to create those same feelings that children seem to specialize in. I just felt like I’d be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge this small simple pleasure of my past and offer thanks. So here’s to the Sears catalog. Though your purpose was financial, you nonetheless brought joy, hope and a smile to millions of kids over the decades and that’s quite an accomplishment. Gone but not forgotten. At least in the heart of this 57 year old kid.

An effective and safe aspirin replacer, white willow bark can be used to treat a variety of pain and inflammation problems without harmful side effects.blank630x20

If you’re trying to move towards less harmful ways of treating pain and inflammation the herb White Willow Bark is a great choice. I’ve used it for years in place of aspirin and Tylenol. White willow bark can relieve both chronic and acute pain and is used for a variety of conditions from lower back pain,  neuralgia, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis to headaches, toothaches and menstrual pain. It can also reduce fevers from colds, etc. Like many herbs, it has a variety of other health benefits.

The bark of the white willow tree has been used for centuries in China and India and by Native Americans to help alleviate pain.  Because of how well it works, the chemical makeup of aspirin was actually modeled after the active ingredient salicin that’s in white willow bark. However, as with most chemically synthesized drugs, aspirin has various dangerous side effects. Aspirin and acetaminophen  (Tylenol ) cause  thousands of deaths per year in the U.S. (FDA/CDC)

You can purchase and take White Willow Bark in a variety of forms including tinctures, teas and capsules.  As with most herbs it takes a little longer to work but the effects last much longer. And again, you don’t have the dangerous side effects.

As with pretty much anything, it requires wisdom and not taking it excessively.  Below are a few things to watch out for and also an informative link with more details.

  • It’s suggested to not give to children under 16 because of the theoretical possibility of Reye’s Syndrome which can develop from taking normal aspirin.
  • Don’t use it with normal aspirin or NSAIDs .
  • Don’t take it if you have any type of allergy to aspirin.
  • It’s possible it can interact negatively with other chemically created drugs.
  • For more details on how it works and its interactions read this easy to read article from the University of Maryland Medical Center.

blank630x20Types of White Willow Bark

I use various brands but the brand NOW White Willow Bark Capsules are highly rated on a variety of herbal shops around the web and I’ve used that one many times.  I keep both the tincture and capsules on hand, as seen in the photo below that I took in herbal closet.  I currently have a higher mg Vitacost brand but normally I use the NOW 400 mg.  Take White Willow Bark as directed on the bottle.

Bedtime should be something you look forward too and enjoy. If you have trouble sleeping we've got a list of unique suggestions ideas to help you out.blank630x20

Do you love bedtime or hate it? If it’s the latter I’m guessing the reason might be that you have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep. At its worst, bedtime can be a nightmare (excuse the pun.) Considering how important sleep is, you should welcome that time of day so we’ve got some great ideas to help you out in that area.

For myself, I literally look forward to bedtime every day. I’ve turned my room into a mini oasis for Roy and I and just walking into it feels good. At night I have my small ritual of turning down the sheets and brushing my teeth (with this method which can heal cavities). Then I get undressed and curl up under the covers and grab my Kindle that I keep on the nightstand. I usually have two or three things I’m reading at one time… a couple of non-fictions on my current topics of interest and then a novel that I can get lost in. I’ll read a bit in the nonfiction then end up with the novel until I fall asleep. It’s pure heaven, especially after a stressful day.

Unfortunately, sleep problems are fairly common especially when you consider that about 10 million Americans use drugs to help them sleep. A large portion of those who have trouble sleeping is due to lifestyle issues… stress, diet, smoking, caffeine etc. If you struggle with insomnia, or staying asleep, we’ve got some much less harmful ideas to help you out!blank630x20

Tips If You Have Trouble Sleeping

Most of the product links are to the actual products I use myself or a good quality replacement.

  1. Darken the Bedroom. Studies have shown that even a small light from a clock can disrupt your body’s sleep patterns.  I’ve  used these blackout curtains on my windows for years. FYI Blackout curtains come in ALL colors! As I also have some electronics in my room I use black electrical tape to cover the little lights on them. If you have to have a clock consider covering  it with a flap of black construction paper that can be flipped up when needed.
  2. Sleep mask. If you can’t darken your room use a sleep mask. We also have a tutorial on how to make a sleep mask.
  3. Lavender oil Taking a whiff of lavender oil before sleep. Studies have shown that lavender is wonderful for helping you relax. I normally put some on my hand to sniff as I go to sleep or I’ve put some on a Kleenex and placed it in my pillow.  This is wonderful for kids too!
  4. White noise. I have a fan on me at night which acts as white noise. I love the wind and it helps me sleep. The noise also does. You can purchase little sound machines very inexpensively that have a variety of sounds you can turn on at night. Try falling asleep to the sound of rain or wind…
  5. Chamomile tea before bed. Warm drinks (non-caffeinated) in general can help you sleep. Chamomile is a relaxing herb so having a cup of that before bed can be very helpful. Sweeten with a little honey if needed.
  6. Buckwheat Pillow Buckwheat pillows have a myriad of benefits for sleep and many people swear by them. The drawback is they are a bit pricey for good organic ones. Read up on them and see if they might help you.
  7. The Bedroom. Make your room a place you love being in. You can see how I did this on our Budget Bedroom Makeover Series here.
  8. The Ritual. Bedtime needs to be a special event and setting up a ritual  can help. For example soaking in a warm bath with candles before going to sleep. Put a special lotion on your hands and arms. Wear nice pajamas. Listen to soothing music. Do a short meditation or pray. Many things on this list can be part of your ritual. Doing the same thing every night can be comforting and calming.
  9. The Right Temperature. Keep the room temp no higher than 70 degrees. Studies show people sleep best in cool rooms.
  10. Ear Plugs. If you wake easily to small noises a high quality set of earplugs will fix you right up!
  11. Read a book. Reading makes many like myself sleepy at night. Also, if I wake in the night and my mind is racing I will actually read on my Kindle a little to put myself back to sleep. As it’s back-lit I don’t have to turn on a light.
  12. Socks. Wear extra soft and cozy socks. If you have trouble with nighttime waking, wearing socks to sleep in can help. Cool room… but warm feet!
  13. Melatonin. This is a wonderful supplement that I’ve used on occasion with great success. Melatonin is a natural hormone secreted by the pineal gland in the brain to help you sleep. Taking 1 to 3 mg an hour before bed can help induce sleep naturally. (It has a variety of other health benefits including fighting cancer.)
  14. Quick Meditation. If you wake during the night do this instant meditation to relax you and help you fall back to sleep. As you lie in bed with eyes closed pay close attention to your normal breathing. As you breath in, silently repeat in your mind “breath in”.  As you breath out, silently repeat “breath out”.  Do this over and over with each normal breath until you fall asleep. This is a powerful quick form of focused meditation to clear your mind and relax your body.
  15. Acupressure. Massage your earlobes SLOWLY between fingers for about 30 seconds each before bed.  Press the wrist points on each wrist as shown in the picture before bed.  Doing both of these should help you sleep better.

Worrying?

If the reason you can’t sleep is tied with worry and not being able to shut your brain off you need to distract it. As I mentioned I do this by reading on my Kindle if I wake up in the night and my brain is trying to worry. I love Dale Carnegie’s quote. You don’t’ have to actually get up. You just have to distract your brain.

If you can’t sleep, then get up and do something instead of lying there
worrying.
It’s the worry that gets you, not the lack of sleep.
~Dale Carnegie

Of course a good diet with exercise will also greatly help your quality of sleep.  When you don’t get enough quality sleep it effects every aspect of your life and your health.  We hope some of these ideas will give you a boost and help you get the much needed rest your body, mind and spirit needs!

Encourage Thankfulness in your home with these simple to make Gratitude Stones. They are a great positive group activity or wonderful as a single gift. blank630x20

If you’d like to give gratitude and thankfulness a boost in your home, gratitude stones are a wonderful incentive. They work for children and adults alike and both will love them! They are also wonderful for activities such as Thanksgiving Day dinner etc. And what a lovely positive gift when given inside our No-Sew Burlap Pouches. blank630x20

Supplies

  • Small stones. These don’t need to be perfectly smooth all around. There just needs to be a small flat surface on part of the stone to paint a heart.
  • Gold and white paint or paint pens. (Or whatever colors you like. The type of activity may determine the choices.)
  • Clear spray coating for stones, or Mod Podge. (Optional but gives them a finished look and nice shine.)
  • Downloaded poems/tags.

Instructions

There are a variety of ways you can use these. Here are some suggestions:

SMALL GROUP SETTING ACTIVITY #1

Give everyone a small handful or pouch of stones. There needs to be one stone per person in attendance in each pouch if possible and each set MUST have different colors with no duplicates. Meaning a set of green hearts… a set of red hearts… etc. Change them by doing hearts with different outlined colors.

RULES
During the event or dinner everyone is to give a stone to another person. When someone receives a stone they must say something they are grateful for.

The thing they are grateful for must be specific and they have to say WHY they are grateful for it. No general things such as “home” or “family.” Try to encourage gratitude for things they take for granted or for specific people.

Every stone must be given to those who have NOT received one yet. If a person has received one they must find someone who hasn’t. Everyone has to give away ALL their ORIGINAL stones. (They will be left with a variety of colors.)

GOAL
To get rid of all their own stones and receive all new ones. It’s easy to keep track because they started out with stones of all one color.

GROUP ACTIVITY #2

Have an even amount of stones. Half are one color of hearts, the other half are another color. Put the stones in a deep bag. Everyone draws a stone. If they get a stone with a certain color heart they say something they are grateful for. Other colored hearts means they choose someone else to say something they are grateful for. Adapts as desired.

AS A GIFT

Give your children, family, friends etc. a pouch of stones. They are to put the stones around their room or home or work area. Every time they see one they are to STOP and think of something they are grateful for. It has to be different each time.   You can use the printable tag and poem to go with the stones.

If you’re a typical person and struggle with having negative thoughts more than you would like to these simple tips can be a huge help! Several require nothing extra at all so pick the ones that work best for you and move towards a more joyful life!

blank630x20

If you’re someone who doesn’t ever get stressed then you don’t need to read any further. OK… now that 99.9% of you are still here, I think we can all agree that worrying now and then is pretty normal. The problem arises when you have more negative thoughts than happy ones.

So I’ve got a few tips for you to help stop the worrying habit and help you get a handle on those negative thoughts. These are things I’ve researched and used with great success myself and continue to use. (Being someone with a serious condition of “freaking out”.)  You may recall we did a post on healing traumatic events titled “Free Yourself from Suffering in One Minute”. That tool is generally for  heavy duty issues whereas this one is for smaller day to day worries that come up.

Ideas to Stop Worrying

Having tried many things through the years to help me get a handle on my thought, these ideas are the ones that work for me.  I was skeptical of some of these things when I first learned of them. But seeing is believing.

TAKE A HUGE DEEP BREATH

Taking a Deep BreathWe know you’ve heard this before but there is science behind it. Taking a deep breath has a physiological purpose and powerful effect on the body. When you take a very deep breath, filling the lungs as much as you can, and then slowly let it out, the body literally releases stress and relaxes. You can immediately feel it. To prove its value just try it the next time you’re super stressed, paying close attention to your body as you do it. You’ll quickly see just how potent it is. So ALWAYS start with this then move on to others if needed.

HAND ON CHEST

If you’re a typical person and struggle with having negative thoughts more than you would like to these simple tips can be a huge help! Several require nothing extra at all so pick the ones that work best for you and move towards a more joyful life! This has worked for me forever. I’ve even used it on others.  Oddly enough only my right hand works for me but the effect is instant.  I simply place my right (dominate) hand over the middle of my chest and a sense of peace overtakes me. Try it and see if you have that ability. Use each hand to determine which works best.

Interestingly enough I recently learned there is validation for doing this. During my studies this year I read a highly rated book entitled Beyond Will Power by Alexander Lloyd, Ph.D.  I was very surprised to learn he uses this exact method on people and he also stated that Sigmund Fred used something similar to help patients.

TIGERS EYE

When I have an overall feeling of anxiety that won’t go away I pull out my tiger’s eye. This is the only crystal that has a noticeable effect for me as far as any healing goes. But it’s effect is immediate.   I have different sizes but the larger unpolished version is the one that works for me. I lay it over my solar plexus and I can feel the anxiety drain away. You can find these at any rock or crystal shop or purchase them online. Buying from a local shop gives you the ability to get a “feel” for it before purchasing.

I had someone who was very skilled in energy work give me this information saying it was a way to “ground” yourself when you’re having emotional issues or feeling out of sorts for various reasons.

To do it you take your index and middle finger together (i.e. the Cub Scout sign) and place the back of those fingers over the middle of your forehead. Hold it there for up to 30 seconds. You should feel a calming.

LEMON & LAVENDER OILS (Aromatherapy)

Lemon and Lavendar OilThere are quite a few essential oils that help alleviate depression or fear. I’ve used these two for a subtle but noticeable difference. The links below are to some fairly inexpensive but highly rated oils on Amazon. You can use any type. Even smelling a fresh lemon will help!

Other Oils for Emotions: Vanilla, Rosemary, and Frankincense

How to Use Oils

You can place the oil anywhere on the body but typical locations are the bottoms of the feet, top of the head and over the heart. I usually place it on my wrists and then under my nose so I can smell it easier. If you have a diffuser you can also use that! It’s the smell that affects the brain.

Final Words

Feeling concerned about certain problems in your life is normal. But when you worry all the time about minor things and your thoughts run away with you it makes for a stressful and unhappy life.  The more we worry the more we literally change our brain and remap our synapses to actually make it easier to worry in the future. This is why change can be difficult. But not impossible. If you’ve been a worrier it will take some regular work to remap your brain and change that habit. But it is doable and these ideas will be a huge help on your way to a more peaceful life!

Cinnamon not only tastes and smells good it has many health benefits. We'll show you how to easily and cheaply make your own cinnamon oil. Free labels too!blank630x20

Cinnamon is one of those herbs that not only smells good but tastes good! It’s also incredibly good for you which is why we did a post a while back called  The 12 Health Benefits of Cinnamon. We’re going to show you another way to use it by making your own cinnamon oil. It’s super easy and a lot less expensive than buying it!

Supplies

Approximate measurements are 2 cups extra virgin olive oil and 5 to 10 sticks depending on size. I just toss in sticks and cover them with olive oil. (I use sticks because it is less messy and much easier to work with.)

  • Good quality cinnamon sticks.
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Clear jar for the first part of the process.
  • Amber or green colored glass jar.* For storage after its made.  Wide mouthed is easiest to fit the sticks into. (Always store oils in a dark glass jar. No plastic. The jar must be dark because any light will affect the oil and make it lose its properties.)  Glass is always best as the oil can draw in chemicals from plastic.

NOTE: If you can’t get a dark jar, use a clear jar. If you can’t get a jar use plastic. Despite the fact that a dark jar is best use what you have. Just store your oil in a dark cool place.

*Some food items and vitamins come in dark glass bottles such as vinegar’s, cooking oils, alcoholic beverages etc.  You can use an empty one of those to hold your oil. Most will have small openings.

Instructions & Labels (pdf)Cinnamon not only tastes and smells good it has many health benefits. We'll show you how to easily and cheaply make your own cinnamon oil. Free labels too!

blank630x20Instructions

  1. Place your cinnamon sticks in a pan and barely cover them with olive oil. The amounts do not have to be exact.  A good estimate is 5 to 10 sticks for every 2 cups oil.
  2. Bring the oil to a simmer. (DO NOT BOIL as olive oil is damaged by high heat.) Simmer your sticks for 2 to 3 hours.
  3. Place the oil and sticks into a clear glass jar. Cover and let it sit for about 3 weeks in a warm spot or window sill where it will get light, gently turning the jar upside down a couple times every day.  The warmth further helps extract the cinnamon.
  4. Place the oil in a dark jar to preserve it. Store the oil in a cool dry place. You can either remove the sticks or keep them in during storage. I remove them once they turn a lighter color. That means all the goodies are extracted.

The oil will last for 1 year.

NOTES: This oil is not as strong as essential oils nor as fragrant. But it still has great medicinal properties and can be used as you would regular essential oil. It can also be taken internally.  Test when using on skin as cinnamon is a “hot” spice, but this version is fairly tame. You can also skip the simmering step and just let the sticks soak for three weeks but the heating makes the oil much stronger and more medicinal.

Pour olive oil over cinnamon sticks to cover.
