Well it ends up a 2 drawer file cabinet might be the answer to your problems! We’ll show you how to take a plain cabinet and turn it into something beautiful and useful. As you’ll see below, our file cabinet was in pretty bad shape. Amazing what just some paint will do! You might recall we did a similar post entitled How to Organize Fabric with a File Cabinet which has a little more details on placing the fabric inside your cabinet. This version is definitely a step up and much classier. If you want more ideas for organizing craft supplies in general, check out our  post The Most Creative Craft Room Organization Ideas.

Watch how two $2 thrift store office chairs were transformed into a gorgeous comfy bench seat with nothing more than some paint and $6.00 of material.

I had a spot in my office that was perfect for a bench seat. I wanted  it to have a back and I wanted it to be padded so it would be comfy for visitors in my office. Have you ever priced those? $300 and up and that’s before you buy any type of padding. I was hoping I might find one at a thrift store that I could makeover but no such luck.  I did, however, happen upon these two chairs sitting next to each other. They were on clearance for $2.00 each but as I looked at them I thought… those look kinda like a bench if you take out the middle arms. And so an idea was born and two old office chairs found a new home. It ends up recovering the cushions was fairly easy! The total cost for the supplies? $16.  I told Roy I just saved him $285 so I should be able to use that money for something else. He wasn’t buying it.

These are the chairs as we got them from the thrift store. $2 each.

The first thing Roy did was cut the middle arm sections off on both chairs.Watch how two $2 thrift store office chairs were transformed into a gorgeous comfy bench seat with nothing more than some paint and $6.00 of material.

Marking them with tape made it easier to make the cut.Watch how two $2 thrift store office chairs were transformed into a gorgeous comfy bench seat with nothing more than some paint and $6.00 of material.

He also had to remove the back wood braces which he’s already done here.Watch how two $2 thrift store office chairs were transformed into a gorgeous comfy bench seat with nothing more than some paint and $6.00 of material.

He sanded off the area he cut.Watch how two $2 thrift store office chairs were transformed into a gorgeous comfy bench seat with nothing more than some paint and $6.00 of material.

This shows him screwing the bottom center legs of both chairs together. Watch how two $2 thrift store office chairs were transformed into a gorgeous comfy bench seat with nothing more than some paint and $6.00 of material.

He then drilled a hole in the center braces and added two bolts for extra stability. Watch how two $2 thrift store office chairs were transformed into a gorgeous comfy bench seat with nothing more than some paint and $6.00 of material.

A solid piece of wood was added to the back and screwed in on the sides where the original back braces were screwed in.   Watch how two $2 thrift store office chairs were transformed into a gorgeous comfy bench seat with nothing more than some paint and $6.00 of material.

It was now time to recover the cushions and arm rests. We picked a very soft, polyester “Heavenly Plush” fabric from Walmart.  We also picked up a Cover Button kit to create matching buttons for the tufted back.Watch how two $2 thrift store office chairs were transformed into a gorgeous comfy bench seat with nothing more than some paint and $6.00 of material. We placed the back-cushions face down onto the backside of the fabric and cut a large enough piece to wrap around the entire cushion.

Watch how two $2 thrift store office chairs were transformed into a gorgeous comfy bench seat with nothing more than some paint and $6.00 of material. We removed the arm rests and stapled fabric around each one, making sure to cut away any excess material so that they would easily rest back onto the arms of the chair.
Watch how two $2 thrift store office chairs were transformed into a gorgeous comfy bench seat with nothing more than some paint and $6.00 of material. For the seat cushions, we wrapped and stapled them the same way we did with our back cushions.  The one difference was that we removed the seat tufting and did not replace it as we did not want tufted seats.

See the final reveal of our outdated kitchen transformation, completed with a minimum of cash. It's now a fun, inspiring place to be. Before & after photos!

Jennifer Seeing the Kitchen for the First Time

This post marks the end of a series on our outdated kitchen transformation. There’s ten posts in all, some of them are just fun little things we did to add into the kitchen such as the Little DIY Sugar Bowl and others are larger projects such as a Built in Corner Simple DIY Pantry.  This was a very 70’s kitchen with cupboards that had some nasty kind of finish someone had tried to apply and it didn’t quite work out.  You might recall I caught a photo of my daughter’s face when she first saw it. Her expression pretty much summed it up.  (She helped with a large portion of the make-over). It needed help badly. And me, being who I am, I wanted something fun and unique. And that’s exactly what I got.

Bear in mind, this transformation is not about a lot of new fancy appliances. Throughout everything, we kept an eye on cost. So the fridge is still the one we’ve had for over a decade and the stove is the one that was in the house when we bought it and badly needs updated. We wanted to show you how you can make what you have look beautiful without spending hundreds of dollars, even if you have to keep older appliances. We gave the stove a facelift and it looks very happy now with some flowers, a new back splash and bright towels on the front.

Never think that you can’t update your home because you have very little money. You’d be amazed at how far a gallon of paint will go! To prove my point, check out our Budget Living Room Makeover and Our Budget Bedroom Makeover. They are full of ideas on how to use what you have and then spend very little on extra’s to makeover a room. And if you’re the type that leans towards the whimsical, such as what we did below, you’ll love our Whimsical Living Room Series!

We start out with four rollover images, ’cause they’re so fun! You can see the room before, then when you rollover the image with your cursor you’ll see the “after” photo. Below that are the rest of the images showing the room from all angels. We did buy a new faucet. That was the only item we replaced.

A small kitchen island can be made from things you already have or even rough lumber. Some paint and contact paper and you've got the extra space you need! Our kitchen isn’t all that big but when we did our outdated kitchen transformation, I felt like there was room for a small kitchen island. You know… like an islet. The extra room would be so helpful. I didn’t want to spend the bucks on one and Roy would have gladly built something for me but the first thing we did was look over our current “stuff”. Ends up we had the perfect thing staring us right in the face. Not everyone is that lucky I realize but what we used was something my dad had made me a few years back to hold appliances in a kitchen that was much smaller than what we have now. Ironically it was just the right height. It just needed a facelift to work in our current home. Sometimes it doesn’t take much to fix something up for another use.  Below is what we did. If you need to build your own and like the rough wood look, you don’t need a lot of skill. Check out our Kitchen Trash Can On Wheels we made to go in the new kitchen. You might also want to check out our contact paper countertop in case you want to use the finish we used on that  for the top of your small kitchen island.

Small Kitchen Island Photos

This is a few years back when my dad originally made the stand for me so I’d have a place to put some of my appliances. He made it to fit that spot exactly!A small kitchen island can be made from things you already have or even rough lumber. Some paint and contact paper and you've got the extra space you need!

When I realized it would work for our small kitchen island the first thing we did was give it a fresh coat of white paint.

A small kitchen island can be made from things you already have or even rough lumber. Some paint and contact paper and you've got the extra space you need!

Next, some contact paper was purchased that matched the kitchen theme and it was placed on top. A small kitchen island can be made from things you already have or even rough lumber. Some paint and contact paper and you've got the extra space you need!

To make it extra sturdy, I’ve decided once this wears out I will put on a new cover of contact paper and then give it 3 coats of water soluble varnish just like I did for our bathroom contact paper countertop makeover. It turned out beautiful and sturdy!  Check out that post to see the tools you’ll need to do it. It’s simple to do and worth the effort. I wanted a towel rack on the island, so rather than buy one Roy made one from wood and a dowel and two ends caps we had.A small kitchen island can be made from things you already have or even rough lumber. Some paint and contact paper and you've got the extra space you need!

I panted it and added some bright towels. A small kitchen island can be made from things you already have or even rough lumber. Some paint and contact paper and you've got the extra space you need!

On the other side I hung a white metal hook to hold one of my larger wood cutting boards since we use the island for cutting a great deal of the time. It’s perfect and not so big that it gets in the way and it allows us the extra bit of space we need! A small kitchen island can be made from things you already have or even rough lumber. Can't find a large enough kitchen trash can to fit a space? You can make one on wheels to fit any spot! All you need are a few simple supplies and toolsEvidently we make a lot more garbage than normal people because our kitchen trash can is always overflowing. I’ve tried my hardest to find a supersize rectangular trash can but to no avail. I’ve even tried using  things like hampers but I can never find just the right one to fit the spot I need or else the bags won’t fit them. So, and here’s another minor embarrassing admission, I finally ended up using a large box. Now,  before I hear those snide remarks of “taaaacky”, I did cover it with contact paper. But it was so large it needed those leaf bags to line it, which are black. That was tacky. The good part was we didn’t have to take the garbage out 5 times a day. (The older I get the more I’m amazed how many times utility wins out over aesthetics.)

Anyway, I used the same cardboard box for probably 4 years.  In our current house we had moved our fridge and were able to put it in between the stove and our armoire pantry. Yes, you hear right and can read about that in our simple DIY pantry). But when we put in our new pantry the fridge had to go back where it initially was and we were left with no place to put our box trash can with the leaf bag. So we build a new one. It was super simple and filled the thin space between the stove and fridge. I also went on a search and found clear large leaf bags to fit it!  Watch how we did it below. You might also enjoy the earlier part of our outdated kitchen transformation which this is part of.

Build your own affordable pantry door organizer with some wood and a few basic tools. It's easier than you think and you'll love the extra storage!I’m not one to waste space, especially in a small home. After getting my simple diy pantry built in as part of our outdated kitchen transformation, the back of that pantry door was just staring at me all empty-like. So I asked Roy if he could pleeeeease make me a pantry door organizer. Being a sucker for my puppy dog eyes, he said yes.  I just wanted it to hold some basic things like plastic bags, teas, jellos and other smaller items. He measured it up and before I knew it, my panty door was empty no more! Roy is not a professional carpenter and only recently started dabbling in building things. He claims anyone can build these things with a few basic tools. So don’t let the idea of wood work overwhelm you!

Pantry Door Organizer Supplies & Tools

  • 1″x4″ for sides and shelves all cut to 2.5″ wide
  • 1/4″ slats cut from left over pieces for cross pieces
  • Luan 1/4″ plywood, 2″x4″ piece
  • Wood Glue
  • Clamps
  • Saber Saw for Cutting Notch in Back for Door Knob
  • Table Saw was used for everything else

Looking for some inexpensive kitchen wall decor to brighten up your home? These darling dollar store plastic plates and platters are just the thing! This charming kitchen wall decor cost us $1.00 to make. Dollar Tree carries these bright plastic plates and platters regularly. The set we did for our kitchen, assuming you have trouble with basic addition, was $3.00.  I actually cheated a bit and used my Silhouette Portrait to cut vinyl letters for my kitchen set.  But that’s just a perk if you have one.

These are so easy and fun to make and you can fill your kitchen with whatever words you choose!  If you’ve been following along you know this is part of our Outdated Kitchen Transformation. Make sure you check out our last decor addition to the project. Our Chicken Wire Frame Memo Board with Faux Succulents. It’s pretty unique!

Kitchen Wall Decor Supplies

NOTE: If you own a Silhouette cutting machine you can of course easily make your own words easily out of vinyl. You can also buy ready made letters at the craft store. The most inexpensive way is to use colored paper and card stock and cut your own. You can use our patterns or make your own on a printer.

Add space and convenience to your small kitchen with this simple DIY pantry! It has floor to ceiling shelves, a door and it fits perfectly into a corner.I’m kind of embarrassed to admit this but we were using a stand up clothes armoire as a simple DIY pantry in our kitchen because we didn’t have enough space to hold all our food stuffs. Hey, you do what you need to do.  And I needed more space for my canned goods. Roy, who’s not a carpenter, finally decided he was going to make us a pantry as part of our outdated kitchen transformation. It would be small and in the  corner, but it would be floor to ceiling. So he designed it using Googles free program SketchUp.  Then he bought the materials and started building! I’m amazed at how much this small pantry holds. I was able to empty the “armoire” pantry and a couple of cupboards.  You can watch him make it start to finish below. If you enjoy these do it yourself wood projects, you might also like our DIY Bed Canopy.

Simple DIY Pantry Plans

We’ve had so many people ask about sizes and plans that we’ve added a download that has that information. Or the best we can give anyway. Roy used the free software Google Sketchup to draw up the plans to fit our space. We’ve included the pictures which show all the dimensions and the actual Google Sketch up file itself should you want to grab the program and pull it in.

A country chicken wire frame memo board that will brighten up your kitchen with its pretty pinecone succulents. It holds useful items plus photos & quotes!

I always wanted a chicken wire frame memo board and when we did our kitchen transformation, I decided to add one into my new kitchen. We’d used chicken wire once before in a really popular Dream Catcher Vision Board  but this one was meant to be kitchen oriented, though I throw in a little twist using a pinecone craft succulent craft we did recently. It turned out gorgeous! I even made my own mail holder from a Malt-O-Meal box. The entire thing was a wonderful upcycle project. Fill yours with whatever pleases you!

Chicken Wire Frame Supplies

PINECONE SUPPLIES

Please visit our Pinecone Craft post for details on making these.

  • Pinecones of various shapes and sizes. You’ll be using bottoms and tops.
  • Pruning shears or something to cut your pine cones with. They need a longer tip to get inside.
  • Paint, acrylic or spray paint (after testing both, spray paint is much easier)
  • Moss, if desired for containers

We had an old rough wood frame that we decided to use for our chicken wire frame. Roy cut some chicken wire to fit it.

Then I pressed the paper carefully onto the box aligning the folds. I decided not to cover the back as it would not show. A country chicken wire frame memo board that will brighten up your kitchen with its pretty pinecone succulents. It holds useful items plus photos & quotes!

I then proceeded to cut and fold the bottom paper. A country chicken wire frame memo board that will brighten up your kitchen with its pretty pinecone succulents. It holds useful items plus photos & quotes!

On the top side I carefully decided where to make the cuts so I could fold the paper down and glue it into place while trimming away the excess.  I used a stick glue to do the seams. A country chicken wire frame memo board that will brighten up your kitchen with its pretty pinecone succulents. It holds useful items plus photos & quotes!

For the finishing touch I added a metal label holder. It was bronze and I wanted silver so I used a little rub ‘n buff on it. A country chicken wire frame memo board that will brighten up your kitchen with its pretty pinecone succulents. It holds useful items plus photos & quotes!

I glued it onto the front of the box and made a hole for the screws and pushed them through.  Then I printed a label that said MAIL on my computer to insert into it. I found a plastic hook and glued it upside down on the back of the box so I could hang it on the board.  I could have also used felt to glue it on but I wanted the box to be removable. A keepsake is something you save from your past that has a significant meaning to you. Here's one very unique way to keep a special memory of your home. I’m a keepsake person. Not to be confused with a hoarder, mind you. I’ve saved things from my own childhood and my children’s childhood through the years. I don’t keep every little scrap of paper they ever brought home. Only the best and most special things are kept and then filed away by year in a large plastic tub. My kids are all grown now and one of their greatest pleasures is going through those tubs. I even saved recordings of them talking when they were little. And I’ve done a post on How to Make a Keepsake Dog or Puppy Paw Print. Even with all I’ve saved, there are some things I wish I’d kept. Like the key for every house we ever lived in. I’ve seen people do awesome displays with those but that just never even crossed my mind.

My daughter did something for me recently that was such a unique idea I wanted to share it in case others might want to do it at some point in the future. As part of our kitchen transformation, she removed wallpaper that had been in the home I’m pretty sure since the 70’s. We’re talking retro-city. Wall to wall fruit and berries and such. She did all the work herself and stripped it off and painted the kitchen a lovely eggshell. What I didn’t know until the next day was that she had taken a swatch of the old wallpaper and framed it for me and hung it in the kitchen as a reminder. It almost brought a tear to my eye. So I wanted to share that little tidbit in case any of you have the same opportunity in the future and might want to do the same thing.  Eventually the swatch will go in our family keepsake box but for now it will hang on our wall for several years at least, a reminder of years past.

You'll be amazed!Follow along with our series as we show you how to do outdated kitchen transformation without spending hundreds and hundreds of dollars. You'll be amazed!See that look on my oldest daughter Jennifer’s face? That’s the unrehearsed snapshot moment she walked into my kitchen for the first time. When Roy and I purchased our 1st home in 37 years of marriage, (a unique story in itself), the kitchen was like a time warp back to the 70’s. I’m sure that wallpaper was all the rage back then but it was gonna have to go at some point. And the cupboards were some sort of attempted crackle mess from long ago. But hey, this was my very own house, and after years of rentals I loved every little pimple and wart it might have.Fast forward and my daughter makes yet another visit, this time with ulterior motives. She wants to give my kitchen a makeover. And now I’m more than ready for it.

We’re going to take you step by step through our process. We tried to be as frugal as possible and a good deal of it was just hard work.  But you’re going to be amazed at the end result. As you know I lean towards the whimsical and unusual in my home and my kitchen is no exception. We also have a budget bedroom makeover plan that would be helpful for any room if you want to take a look at that.

So follow along with us the next few weeks as we show you what we’ve done. We’ll also toss in a craft and decor item or two along the way that we did just for the room. Our goal is to show you that you can redo a room without spending hundreds and hundreds of dollars.

First, here’s what the kitchen looked like in all its original glory!Follow along with our series as we show you how to do outdated kitchen transformation without spending hundreds and hundreds of dollars. You'll be amazed!

KITCHEN TRANSFORMATION STEP #1

Stripping Wallpaper : Painting Walls : Painting Cupboards

The wallpaper came off much easier than expected. You never know how that’s going to go and it can sometimes be a nightmare. But it came off in fairly large strips as you can see. All Jennifer did was soak it using warm water and a sponge and let it sit for a few minutes then pulled it off in huge chunks.  Any residue that was left came off with warm water and a sponge.

Next she worked on the cupboards. She removed all the door and drawer pulls and filled them in. Once dry she sanded them. Then she sanded the cupboards lightly.

NOTE: You do need to treat your gloves with care and don’t stretch out the finger holes anymore than necessary. The Frey Check helps a lot but they are still knit gloves and will pull apart if you are too rough with them. Just use a gentle “hand” so to speak.

Carefully put them on and see where they fall on your fingers. This lets you know if any need trimmed. You will run a bead of Fray Check around the edge of each finger hole. Don’t be afraid to rub it in as you go with the tip of the applicator. Put plenty on. Transform your bathroom for only a few dollars with a contact paper countertop. You'll be amazed at how beautiful it looks & so will your family & guests!

Doing a contact paper countertop makeover has been a popular way to inexpensively cover up an old ugly countertop. Granite contact paper is typically used as it resembles a real granite countertop  and while if done well it looks awesome, this comes with a variety of inherent problems. Well, we’re going to show you how to fix almost all of them on one fell swoop! And if your looking for other great inexpensive fix-up ideas check out our Frugal DIY Bedroom Makeover Ideas and our Classy Living Room Ideas on a Budget.

PROBLEMS WITH A CONTACT PAPER COUNTERTOP

  1. Seams. There’s no way around having seams and even with pattern matching they tend to show. With granite paper you can’t match patterns and they show up more. Accept it.
  2. Water can get under the seams.  If it does, they will start to peel up.
  3. It’s easily damaged because, well, it’s paper. In a kitchen you can’t cut on it or put anything hot on it. In the bath room no curling irons can touch it.
  4. Edges peel up. If your countertop has a straight edge as the one shown below, the paper will peel away easily where it meets together when anyone rubs against it.
  5. Be careful. You just have to be careful because it can be nicked with anything sharp or discolored easily.

Those are some pretty big issues considering all the work you go through to put the stuff on. And it does take a good bit of work.  But we found a way to make it more sturdy and long lasting. You still can’t set extremely hot things on it or cut on it but water and peeling should not be an issue which is the biggest problem in a bathroom.

NOTE: This is best done in bathrooms mainly because you can’t cut or place hot things on it even with our method. However, if you’re really careful in your kitchen, go for it!

How To Make a Contact Paper Countertop Last

Water Based Polyurethane Gloss Finish.  Because it’s water based it doesn’t harm the contact paper.  It seals over the seams and edges so water cannot get in. It protects the surface and all your hard work. The only type I found is linked below and made by Rust-Oleum. A little goes a long way. It’s a bit pricey but we use it for all types of things such as my post on how to build a Large Surface Home Office Desk.  Buying it in the two quart package can save you almost $15.   This is of course optional. You can  just treat your contact paper with great care. But if you have kids or just don’t want to worry about being extra careful you don’t have to use it.  But if you have edges of your counter like mine, I’d still suggest gluing them somehow as they will find a way to peel just from leaning against them.

FYI This does make it more of a permanent thing. You cannot easily remove the paper later. You would have to do some light sanding to get through the gloss.

Contact Paper Countertop Supplies

NOTE: Once companies realized people were using granite contact paper to cover counters they raised the price of that type so its a bit more costly. Buy enough to cover your counter. If you’re  using a pattern that you can match you’ll need more.  One roll “barely” did my small countertop.

Time Frame

This job could be done in a day and ready to use the next day but you’d need to start early to allow yourself to get all the coats of varnish on.

How Long It Took Me

Covering small bathroom vanity: 2 Hours
Clear Coat: 1 day due to drying time of 2 hours in between each of three coats.

Download Reminders

Should you decide to not use clear varnish grab one of our free reminders to print and/or frame and  set on  your countertop! Photos of them printed up are at the bottom of post. Various sizes!Transform your bathroom for only a few dollars with a contact paper countertop. You'll be amazed at how beautiful it looks & so will your family & guests!

Instructions

  1. Scrub and clean your countertop thoroughly and wipe with a clean dry cloth. You want to make sure there is nothing left on it to make the contact paper not adhere to the surface.
  2. Having someone to help makes it go much faster and makes the paper easier to handle.
  3. This project takes patience. If you hurry it up you’ll mess up.

This is what our bathroom looked like before we repainted our walls.  The house must have been a rental because at some point they had painted over wall paper. Sad but true. For the moment we were looking for a quick fix up so we did a little sanding and hole filling and added a new coat of paint.   Eventually we’ll redo the entire bathroom the “right” way and also replace the vanity but for now we were looking for a quick inexpensive facelift. Transform your bathroom for only a few dollars with a contact paper countertop. You'll be amazed at how beautiful it looks & so will your family & guests! The walls had been painted here. But the counter top still needed some work. It appeared that some past owner had also painted the countertop. It wasn’t too bad of a job, however, they went over everything including the part of the back splash that was metal. I debated what to do and finally decided I would paint the metal parts metallic silver. Transform your bathroom for only a few dollars with a contact paper countertop. You'll be amazed at how beautiful it looks & so will your family & guests!I chose Martha Stewart’s metallic silver as it’s close to the real thing. I masked off everything with painters tape.

I probably didn’t need to do the inside parts as those would be painted over anyway but I was thorough. Transform your bathroom for only a few dollars with a contact paper countertop. You'll be amazed at how beautiful it looks & so will your family & guests!

I painted two layers of silver paint on all the trim parts, allowing it to dry in between coats. Transform your bathroom for only a few dollars with a contact paper countertop. You'll be amazed at how beautiful it looks & so will your family & guests!

It looked quite a bit better in my opinion. Transform your bathroom for only a few dollars with a contact paper countertop. You'll be amazed at how beautiful it looks & so will your family & guests!

Now it was time to start on the counter top itself. I grabbed my roll of granite contact paper. Transform your bathroom for only a few dollars with a contact paper countertop. You'll be amazed at how beautiful it looks & so will your family & guests!

There will be some measuring involved on parts but for the larger areas you just unroll and start. Again, your surface should be cleaned spotless and free of any soaps etc. so that the paper sticks well.Transform your bathroom for only a few dollars with a contact paper countertop. The trick is to make sure you have no bubbles and that it’s even as you lay it out. Use a credit card or something similar to help smooth it down as you go.Transform your bathroom for only a few dollars with a contact paper countertop. You'll be amazed at how beautiful it looks & so will your family & guests!

When you come to the sink you will carefully press up to it and down into the area around it. Because our sink was curves as many are we were only able to go so far and then needed to start cutting small slits that allowed us to press the paper closer to the sink. Cut a large hole out for the sink, making sure to give you plenty of paper to work with on all sides. Transform your bathroom for only a few dollars with a contact paper countertop. You'll be amazed at how beautiful it looks & so will your family & guests!

Notice how I cut the paper and moved on. At some point you might run out of paper and have to make a seam. I did not due to how short my counter was. If you do have to make a seam you can decide ahead of time where you might want to have it fall for atheistic purposes. Transform your bathroom for only a few dollars with a contact paper countertop. You'll be amazed at how beautiful it looks & so will your family & guests!

Once I had my paper laid longways across my counter, I’d go back and do the detail work around the rest of my sink. I make small slits with my X-acto knife, part way down and NOT TOO FAR, just enough to allow me to push the paper around the edge of the sink and curve it around as shown. Again, you want no bubbles. This might require some lifting and re-positioning. It takes patience and time. Go slow.  Transform your bathroom for only a few dollars with a contact paper countertop. You'll be amazed at how beautiful it looks & so will your family & guests!

You want your paper tucked tightly next to your sink. Transform your bathroom for only a few dollars with a contact paper countertop. You'll be amazed at how beautiful it looks & so will your family & guests!

More slicing down to allow for the curve. Again, do not go down too far. Transform your bathroom for only a few dollars with a contact paper countertop. You'll be amazed at how beautiful it looks & so will your family & guests!

Trimming off extra. Transform your bathroom for only a few dollars with a contact paper countertop. You'll be amazed at how beautiful it looks & so will your family & guests!

The front edge.Transform your bathroom for only a few dollars with a contact paper countertop. You'll be amazed at how beautiful it looks & so will your family & guests!

The paper was not deep enough to go to the back which is where I thought I would rather have my seam as apposed to having a seam vertically down my sink.  I decided this would show much less.Transform your bathroom for only a few dollars with a contact paper countertop. You'll be amazed at how beautiful it looks & so will your family & guests!

I cut a piece of paper a bit larger than the area and moved it around to determine where the pattern was the “best”. Remember you can’t match granite exactly.Transform your bathroom for only a few dollars with a contact paper countertop. You'll be amazed at how beautiful it looks & so will your family & guests!

I then put it in place and rubbed it down.Transform your bathroom for only a few dollars with a contact paper countertop. You'll be amazed at how beautiful it looks & so will your family & guests!

My piece was going to need a seam at some point. I decided right behind the facet was perfect. Transform your bathroom for only a few dollars with a contact paper countertop. You'll be amazed at how beautiful it looks & so will your family & guests!

After it was in place I carefully trimmed it with my knife.Transform your bathroom for only a few dollars with a contact paper countertop. You'll be amazed at how beautiful it looks & so will your family & guests!

I cut the pieces for the backsplash and added and trimmed those, seaming if needed.Transform your bathroom for only a few dollars with a contact paper countertop. You'll be amazed at how beautiful it looks & so will your family & guests!

I was now ready to trim around the sink. I trimmed a bit high to start. Transform your bathroom for only a few dollars with a contact paper countertop. You'll be amazed at how beautiful it looks & so will your family & guests!

Then I went back and trimmed it where I wanted it. You’ll notice my sink has a brown area where it was caulked years back. If you mess up,  you can quickly wipe it off with a damp rag and add more. Transform your bathroom for only a few dollars with a contact paper countertop. You'll be amazed at how beautiful it looks & so will your family & guests!

Get organized with this fun huge wall calendar made with Washi tape, large sequins and Post-it notes! It's great for a home offices or a family center!

Get organized with a gigantic wall calendar!  As you might know, huge wall calendars are not only hard to find but also really expensive. Well, here’s a way to make your own using Washi tape and its not only inexpensive but a fun eye catching focal point. Ours was used in my daughter Amy’s home office but it would be equally great as a family center. It incorporates Post-it Notes and you can use smaller ones and assign each person a different color or use large ones that fill the entire block. So many choices! We did ours in black and gold but get creative! If you’re looking for other ways to get organized check out how to Organize Office Supplies in Style and our Home Office Closet Makeover!

Wall Calendar Supplies

NOTE: We tried electrical tape for the calendar as we thought it would be perfect. It was too stretchy and would not stay up on the wall.

Step By Step Instructions

Wall Calendar Frame

Something To Think About: What types and sizes of Post-it notes you want to use. i.e. small sizes for each person, a large size that fills the block etc. Some might require doing some specific math to get your boxes the right size.  You’re also using wider Washi Tape than the typical type.

  1. Pick a wall that you’ll place the calendar on.
  2. Decide how big you want the calendar. The only size limit is your wall.
  3. Measure out and lightly mark where your rectangle will be.
  4. Take your width number and divide by 7. Take that number and measure and mark across the top and bottom of your rectangle.
  5. Take your height number and divide by 5. Take that number and measure and mark down the right and left side of your rectangle.
  6. Cut your Washi Tape and lay it out along the all the lines you made.  The main calendar is now completed.

Calendar Sequin Dates

  1. Write the numbers 1 through 31 on your sequin’s with the hole on the top. These are for hanging on your days.
  2.  Lightly hammer tap in the sequin pins where you want your dates to hang out. Change them out each month!

 Calendar Days of the Week

  1. Make half circles from black paper that fit over your day columns.
  2. Place your day of the week letters on each half circle and tape it over the appropriate column using double sided tape.
  3. As everyone generally always knows what month it is we didn’t add a month label but you certainly could.

We'll show you how to hang any wreath with a piece of ribbon and a thumbtack leaving no mark on your door! Toss in a small cork and it stores wonderfully!blank630x20

I’ve never liked putting holes in my doors and I was also never a fan of those metal or plastic over the door wreath hangers either. When I learned how to hang them with ribbon, I’ve never looked back. Then I took it a step further and created by own little system involving large thumbtacks and tiny corks for storage. I feel so organized now!  My door remains hole free and I can match my hanger if I want so it blends right in. We have a tutorial for the Peace Wreath below which I think works for any time of year, depending on how you tweak it.  We also have a Burlap Wreath made from an embroidery hoop which I think is quite clever so check that out!

It's really hard to find a glue gun with an on off switch. But its easy to install a $2 switch to the cord in 10 minutes allowing you to keep it plugged in!For some reason it’s really hard to find a glue gun with an on off switch. I know because I’ve searched and searched. My small detailed glue gun has one but I needed a larger gun. After researching I found the gun I wanted but alas… no switch. That means I’d have to unplug it every time. Very inconvenient. So I purchased a small inexpensive “feed cord switch” which took about 10 minutes to install onto the cord near the handle of my new glue gun. It was so easy, even a teen could do it and all you need is a couple of small tools you should already have on hand. Now I can keep my glue gun plugged in. This also works for many other things like lamps.  Don’t forget to grab your free printable below full of some very useful glue gun tips and hacks.

Speaking of glue guns and hot glue, we’ve got a couple craft ideas that takes  hot glue as the main material! Check out our Creepy Gothic Jewelry and our DIY Fall Decorations Hot Glue Glitter Leaves.

Glue Gun On Off Switch Supplies

  • Feed Cord Switch
  • X-acto Knife
  • Screwdriver
  • Glue Gun This is one I researched and recently purchased. It has great reviews, adjustable temp and exchangeable tips, though you do have to buy the extra tips.  It had everything I wanted except the on off switch.
  • Glue sticks. I buy these in bulk and this is the best deal I’ve found for the regular size sticks. I prefer them extra long so I don’t have to change them as often.

My Mini Gun with On/Off Switch

It's really hard to find a glue gun with an on off switch. But its easy to install a $2 switch to the cord in 10 minutes allowing you to keep it plugged in!

I’ve owned two of these and you’ll see them in many of my photos. They are great mini guns with a nice detail tip. They hold the mini glue sticks, which I buy in extra long lengths so I don’t have to change them as often. This gun does have an on off switch. However, with as much hot gluing as I do I needed a bigger gun which is why I added the one above to my supplies.

It’s a very easy thing to do, having taught our grown dog to do it in 3 days and our new puppy in about 5 days.

We’ve also got a great tutorial on how to make the posh bell shown including a free download of the “ring bell for service” text! Make sure you check out our other furry friend posts such as Keepsake Puppy Paw Prints and our 5 Minute Puppy Dog Bow Tie!

NOTE ABOUT HOOKS: The hook shown was purchased at Hobby Lobby. It’s used upside down from how it would normally be used. Whatever hook you use must have some type of loop that allows for you to hang your bell on and make sure it sticks out far enough to not hinder the bell.  We link to one that will work below, on Amazon.

We'll show you how to stop smoking in 3 weeks with only 3 minutes a day using simple acupressure! Print out our pocket card and see if it works for you!blank630x20We'll show you how to stop smoking in 3 weeks with only 3 minutes a day using simple acupressure! Print out our pocket card and see if it works for you! This article explains how to stop smoking using simple acupressure! It’s worked for many people and just might help you! One thing for sure is its too easy not to at least give it a try! Acupressure is an ancient healing scientific art developed in Asia over 5,000 years ago and is actually a predecessor to Acupuncture. Acupuncture and acupressure use the same points, but acupuncture employs needles, while acupressure uses gentle but firm pressure. The fingers or other objects are used to press points on the surface of the skin to stimulate the body’s natural self-curative abilities. When these points are pressed, they release muscular tension and promote the circulation of blood and the body’s life force energy to aid healing.

How It Works

We'll show you how to stop smoking in 3 weeks with only 3 minutes a day using simple acupressure! Print out our pocket card and see if it works for you!Acupressure is based on the body having 14 “meridians” that carry energy throughout it. These meridians start at your fingertips and connect to the brain and then go outward from there. Think of your body as a plumbing system full of inter-connected pipes. If a pipe gets blocked, it slows down the water rushing through the system. You may have a block in one place that causes a problem further down the line. It is the same with your body’s meridians.

Acupressure removes obstructions in your body’s energy system allowing it to flow the way it should, thus removing the specific problems associated with a specific blockage. That is why pressing on certain points can alleviate problems in other areas of the body. Many times you will notice that a specific point is extremely tender. This means there’s a problem in that meridian.

blank630x20How to Stop Smoking

IMPORTANT: It is not necessary to have your “last cigarette” and then start. The desire to continue smoking should automatically begin to slowly disappear to allow you to naturally stop on your own. All you need is a positive attitude and consistency to do the program daily for three weeks. You should not have normal withdrawal symptoms due to the nature of acupressure. Some people experience excessive sweating. You should drink plenty of water during your treatment.

We'll show you how to stop smoking in 3 weeks with only 3 minutes a day using simple acupressure! Print out our pocket card and see if it works for you!

POINT #1: Proper placement is very important. This point is inside the ear rim on the front wall of the inner ear towards the front of the face. (Not on the rim itself.) Insert tool as shown and press firmly for 30 seconds. Repeat on other ear.

POINT #2: This point is directly on ridge or rim of the lower ear at the highest point. It is situated in the center of the small mound that sticks up. Press firmly for 30 seconds. Repeat on other ear.

WARNING: 30 seconds is recommended as doing it longer can make you dizzy. You can do it up to 60 seconds per point if you do not get dizzy.

RwaterRESULTS: With this treatment you should either have no desire for cigarettes or else they will begin tasting very unpleasant to you. Due to the signals that acupressure gives the brain, the only possible side effect you might experience is an increase in sweating.

REMEMBER: Drink lots of water, as this helps flush the toxins out and increases success of the program. It’s suggested that you use no other method to stop smoking while doing the acupressure program.

Refurbishing furniture can be as easy as giving it a new coat of paint. And when you pick bright contrasting colors you’ve got a gorgeous statement piece!  This is one of our “Buff Your Stuff” series where we take things we own and give them a whole new look. And what a dramatic difference this one is! This is an older unique piece of furniture, that in all honesty, we have no idea what it was originally meant for. But as you can see, with a little sanding and some paint and a few extras it became a lovely storage piece. Our tutorial for a $100 Bill Wall Decoration Idea was  the  perfect accent piece to place above this piece as you’ll see below!

Grab a free potty training puppy chart and read about how a very special puppy named Oliver Sprout found a loving home with the help of the Humane Society. blank630x20

In this article I share the unique story of how we found our newest family member Oliver Sprout. There’s also a free potty training puppy chart you can print out to help keep track of your own puppy’s schedule!  Plus you can also read how to make darling 5 Minute Puppy Dog Bow Ties like the one Oliver is sporting! Don’t forget to make your little one his own Personalized Dog Bowls!

Time for a Dog

We’ve always had a dog in the house for most of our 37 years of marriage, but when we lost our last dog Maggie, I took a break.  I started feeling a strong need for another dog a while back and it finally felt like the time was right. I asked my husband Roy to pick it out without me. I know that’s a bit odd but Roy is incredibly intuitive and I knew he would be led to the perfect dog for us and I didn’t want my funky vibes messing things up.  I told him to just use his intuition and that’s all that mattered. Breed, age, size was of little importance. Within a week of my decision he had looked at a few dogs but none were “our” dog. Then on Saturday August 13th a friend told me that the Humane Society was set up at the local Petco.

Off to Petco

I told Roy about Petco and off he went. He told me he walked into the store and there were lots of puppies in crates. He looked at them all and noticed there was one in a cage by itself that was just sitting there staring directly at him while all the others were doing their own puppy thing and ignoring him. All of a sudden there was some loud noise in the store and the dogs started barking and going crazy.  All except that one pup who just sat there not making a peep, staring at Roy.  Roy went over to it and stuck his finger in the cage and the little guy nuzzled up against him. He took him out and within a few minutes knew this was our dog.

Roy called me from Petco and said “I found our dog but I’m not going to send you a picture”.  He wanted me to be surprised. The little pup slept on his lap the entire way home. He called me when he got near the house and I went out to greet him and took the little ball of fur and it was love at first sight. We brought him inside and our 10 year old granddaughter Alyssa was there at the time. After a minute or two she said “He looks like an Oliver.”  I said “Well I’ll be… he does look like an Oliver.”  Now the Humane Society had given him a temporary name of “Sprout and that seemed likewise fitting so we named him Oliver Sprout.

The gal at the store also told Roy how they got the pup. Someone saw this little bitty thing walking out of a field all by himself somewhere in town. Good person that they were, they picked him up and brought him to the Humane Society.  I thought maybe that’s where the name Sprout came from… because he came out of a field and he was so tiny.

A Special Dog

Grab a free potty training puppy chart and read about how a very special puppy named Oliver Sprout found a loving home with the help of the Humane Society.

Asleep in my arms.

Oliver is a calm loving little guy who likes to snuggle and is very playful as most puppies are. He’s taken a particular attachment to Roy and Roy to him.

When I went to bed that night I let Oliver lay by me for a few minutes which he did as calmly as can be.  Roy came in to get him  to take him out with him and another interesting thing happened.

Now, Roy has a connection with animals in general and all of them are drawn to him, but he’s never been over the top with them. He’s not been one to kiss them and he doesn’t care to be licked. When he picked up this little pup, he kissed him on the top of the head, and went out.   That was when I really knew this was a special dog. As kind and loving as Roy is to animals, I’ve never seen him kiss any of them including our past pets.

blank630x20Roy with Oliver the day he brought him home. Grab a free potty training puppy chart and read about how a very special puppy named Oliver Sprout found a loving home with the help of the Humane Society.

blank630x20Just Maybe…

I told Roy the next day I think Oliver Sprout walked out of that field looking for us and was waiting for Roy to come into Petco, that’s why he was sitting there so calming looking at him when he came in. That’s what I choose to believe anyway. One thing is for sure, Roy and I and Oliver’s life just became much richer.

Gluing Larger Bows (no thread version)

You can make several of these and glue each bow on or you can place a piece of Velcro onto the neck piece for changing out bows. Cover the seam with the bow or the Velcro.

We suggest using a separate cup to put your bottles in for draining. If you do use the same cup with the extra in it, wipe off the edge so that glue does not get on the outside of the bottle. Turn the jar upside down and place it into the clean cup. (Notice the glue on the edge of the cup which we had to scrub off our bottle!)  Let this sit for a couple of hours or even overnight. AIR DRY: The time needed to air dry your jars will vary greatly depending on  the temperature. It might take a few days. You can leave them in the cups but I’d suggest poking holes around the upper sides of the cups so air gets into them as they dry.

BAKING: Baking is optional but it’s much faster. Place your well drained jars onto a baking dish or pan covered with foil. Painting or tinting jars can be pretty sloppy work. With our great tips you will learn not only how to paint mason jars easily but with very little mess!

Heat the oven to 200 degrees and bake the jar until the color becomes translucent or see through. This will usually take anywhere from 45 minutes to 90 minutes. The first thing you need to do is remove the metal ring strip from each of the binders. This can be a little tricky depending on the type, but generally you can carefully pry them off using screwdriver and pliers. We insert a large flat screwdriver next to where it was attached and then twisted the screwdriver to help pull the metal up.Make super cheap & creative wall mounted file holders using 3 ring binders! After bending the metal center up a little we used pliers to reach under and twist the brad that attached it. The goal is to remove the rings with the least amount of damage to the binder itself. Make super cheap & creative wall mounted file holders using 3 ring binders! This does leave a hole on each side of the binder. But it is the back of the binder so it doesn’t matter as that part will be against the wall. Make super cheap & creative wall mounted file holders using 3 ring binders! We’ve got free printables so you can turn yours into a homework helper set!

This natural skin glue not only closes wounds that would need stitches but it heals the skin itself so there is no scaring and it does so very quickly.blank630x20This natural skin glue not only closes wounds that would need stitches but it heals the skin itself so there is no scaring.  And it does it quickly. We keep this kit on hand at all times along with our cayenne tincture to stop bleeding and heart attacks and strokes. Whether you are at a place that you can’t get stitches or you simply choose to do them yourself, this method is simple and painless.

This natural skin glue not only closes wounds that would need stitches but it heals the skin itself so there is no scaring and it does so very quickly. The specific herbs used heal the skin in addition to allowing the wound to close, hence no scars.  This information comes from my herbalist friend who also saved my son’s finger when the doctors would have removed it, by healing it of MRSA. She’s used it many times through the years including gluing someones finger tip back on.

I’ll admit I’ve held off on writing this article as I was waiting someone in the family to get a wound I could use as an example to photograph.  But alas my family has been wound-less for quite some time… knock on wood.  I’ll add photos  if that occasion every arises.  Grab our printable instruction card below to add to the kit.

DISCLAIMER: Please be wise. If its a huge gaping wound, see a doctor if you can. Though it’s able to be used for larger wounds, I suggest you use it only for  smaller cuts and wounds that might need stitching.

Skin Glue Supplies

The skin glue requires very specific ingredients which can be purchased online or at various stores.  Regular tape and bandages can be used but Steri Strips are best. You can find both herbs in powdered form on eBay at the links below. This is where we purchased ours.

You can also easily powder the leaf kind yourself with a mini coffee grinder, all of which can be purchased on Amazon at the links below.

REMAINING INGREDIENTS

blank630x20Mixing Instructions

Make fresh for each wound. You can place the dry herbs in a jar and then add other ingredients when needed. Any left over mixture can be stored in fridge and then thinned with wheat germ oil and used up to a month later.  You will be reapplying it daily for a while.

  • 1 part powdered comfrey leaf
  • 1/2 part powdered lobelia
  • 1 part honey

Mix the above ingredients. Add a little wheat germ oil until its a good consistency, pasty but not too thick or thin.

EXAMPLE FOR A SMALL WOUND

1 tsp powdered comfrey, 1/2 tsp powdered lobelia, 1 tsp honey. Wheat germ oil added till pasty but not too thin, about 6 to 10 drops.

blank630x20

How To Use

Fill the wound with the mixture. Whatever side its gaping try to seal towards the wound not away from it using the Steri Strips or close and tape or bandage. Don’t touch it  for 24-48 hours. Then remove the strips or bandages and add more skin glue. DO NOT REMOVE THE OLD GLUE just add more. Do this until healed.

If you struggle to find clarity and inner peace, the answers can be as close as the nearest park, trail or field. Learn how to find peace in nature. blank630x20Written by Roy Rivers

by.roy.riversThough they don’t struggle with it quite as much as adults, even children need inner peace in their lives. When I was growing up in Arkansas, like many kids, I loved playing outdoors. We lived in the country so I generally had a good deal of open spaces and wooded areas to roam in. But it was a bit more than just typical childhood pleasure that drew me outside. From my earliest memories I felt a strong connection to the outdoors. I quickly learned at a young age that it was also a place I could find comfort in.

blank630x20An 8 Year Old Learns the Peace of Nature

If you struggle to find clarity and inner peace, the answers can be as close as the nearest park, trail or field. Learn how to find peace in nature.

Me as a Kid

When I was 8 years old, and without consulting me, my family decided that I should get baptized. I didn’t fully grasp the situation, however, I couldn’t swim and I was afraid of the water so this idea truly scared me. One Saturday morning I learned that my brother-in-law Monte was on his way over and the family was going to take me to do the deed. As soon as I saw an opening I grabbed a little jacket and I high tailed it out into the woods and holed up in one of my favorite hiding places. I waited until it was getting close to dark before I went back home, avoiding the baptism that day. (Though they did catch me later!) But the entire time I was hiding, it was like I could hear voices of reason from the forest and trees talking to me about what I was doing, why I was avoiding the baptism and why I felt like it was an important thing for them to ask me if I wanted to be baptized. It was a strong sense of peace for a frightened little boy and as a result of those very clear feelings that I had, I knew that anytime I needed help or answers, nature was there for me.

As the years went by it was a tremendous comfort to know that when I was feeling troubled by something that the open arms of nature were waiting for me and through the years it has served me well more times than I can count. When I would have problems at home or school or issues with friends, I could go out and think about things and receive insights and new ways to look at them.blank630x20

Conversing With Nature. Literally.

If you struggle to find clarity and inner peace, the answers can be as close as the nearest park, trail or field. Learn how to find peace in nature. As an adult I grab my walking stick (one I carved myself) and go on hikes regularly on our local trails. I’m a bit of an unusual hiker. I talk out loud while I hike. I may just talk about what’s going on in my life in general, as I would to a friend. If I’ve got a particular problem that I’m trying to get clarity on I’ll say “Here’s the problem that I’m having. “And then I explain it. Then as I go along, I listen. The thoughts that come to me as a whisper in my head are what I perceive is a higher force talking to me. You can call it God, Father, Mother Nature or whatever fits in with your own beliefs. But for me it is very real.

“As I looked out across the way, in a very large tree was a huge hawk looking right at me. It was almost as if it was waiting for me to make eye contact…”

One time recently I was having a particularly tough day so I decided to go on a hike. As I went up the trail I kept stopping and looking around because I thought I heard something. But I didn’t see a bit of wildlife or anyone else on the trail. I remember thinking, “Where the heck is everyone?” I usually run into folks now and then or see various critters but there was complete stillness and I thought “I’d love to see an eagle soaring about now.”

I walked into the next clearing and rested for a minute to catch my breath. As I looked out across the way, in a very large tree was a huge hawk looking right at me. It was almost as if it was waiting for me to make eye contact and when I did it jumped into flight. It flew in several big circles over me and then soared for a bit looking right at me. I said out loud “Wow. Thank you.” It’s things like this that I take very personally.

The information I receive on my forays into nature might not be the overall answer to my problem, but it’s always clarity to some facet of it. Something that allows me to calm down and see the different sides and vantage points and how I sit in the middle of it all. No matter what the issue, every time that I go out there’s something I receive. Every time.

blank630x20How To Connect

I believe anyone can connect with nature and get answers using the following concepts.

  1. Find a place you can go to, where there is some type and feeling of nature, even a small amount.
  2. Empty your mind and focus on what’s right in front of you. Feel what you’re feeling, notice the smells, notice the sounds in the wind and the feel of it on your face. Feel your leg muscles as you walk. Be highly attuned to everything around you and shut off the non-stop idle chatter many of us have going on in our heads at any given moment.
  3. Ask your questions. Either speak them or just ask them in your mind. Then be still and listen. Insights will be subtle for most. One small insight can be the answer you’re looking for.

blank630x20What If You Live in the City?

Finding Clarity and Inner Peace in Nature 5Though I grew up in the country, we moved a lot, sometimes to less rural areas. But there was always some place, even in the city, that I could go to. There were large vacant lots that were grown up, or parks. There will always be little places of nature here and there.  Don’t think this only works if you have a forest to roam If you struggle to find clarity and inner peace, the answers can be as close as the nearest park, trail or field. Learn how to find peace in nature. or a mountain to climb.  Even in the middle of the city with cars buzzing around, you can sit on a bench and look up at the sky, watch the clouds, the birds and connect.

Because I’m such a fan of nature I’m also a believer in the good energy of crystals.  I placed one on the top of my hiking stick that I made so I would have it with me while I hiked. Carry a clear quartz crystal with you in your pocket or fanny pack when you hike for an added boost, especially if you live in the city!

If you struggle to find clarity and inner peace, the answers can be as close as the nearest park, trail or field. Learn how to find peace in nature. blank630x20Going into nature can feel like a breath of life. It’s naturally invigorating and cleansing and it’s a time you can feel a part of the entire planet.  But most importantly, it’s a place where an answer awaits in the stillness. All you have to do is ask the question.
