IMPORTANT: It is not necessary to have your “last cigarette” and then start. The desire to continue smoking should automatically begin to slowly disappear to allow you to naturally stop on your own. All you need is a positive attitude and consistency to do the program daily for three weeks. You should not have normal withdrawal symptoms due to the nature of acupressure. Some people experience excessive sweating. You should drink plenty of water during your treatment.

POINT #1: Proper placement is very important. This point is inside the ear rim on the front wall of the inner ear towards the front of the face. (Not on the rim itself.) Insert tool as shown and press firmly for 30 seconds. Repeat on other ear.

POINT #2: This point is directly on ridge or rim of the lower ear at the highest point. It is situated in the center of the small mound that sticks up. Press firmly for 30 seconds. Repeat on other ear.

WARNING: 30 seconds is recommended as doing it longer can make you dizzy. You can do it up to 60 seconds per point if you do not get dizzy.

RwaterRESULTS: With this treatment you should either have no desire for cigarettes or else they will begin tasting very unpleasant to you. Due to the signals that acupressure gives the brain, the only possible side effect you might experience is an increase in sweating.

Skin Glue Supplies

The skin glue requires very specific ingredients which can be purchased online or at various stores.  Regular tape and bandages can be used but Steri Strips are best. You can find both herbs in powdered form on eBay at the links below. This is where we purchased ours.

You can also easily powder the leaf kind yourself with a mini coffee grinder, all of which can be purchased on Amazon at the links below.

REMAINING INGREDIENTS

Make fresh for each wound. You can place the dry herbs in a jar and then add other ingredients when needed. Any left over mixture can be stored in fridge and then thinned with wheat germ oil and used up to a month later.  You will be reapplying it daily for a while.

  • 1 part powdered comfrey leaf
  • 1/2 part powdered lobelia
  • 1 part honey

Mix the above ingredients. Add a little wheat germ oil until its a good consistency, pasty but not too thick or thin.

EXAMPLE FOR A SMALL WOUND

1 tsp powdered comfrey, 1/2 tsp powdered lobelia, 1 tsp honey. Wheat germ oil added till pasty but not too thin, about 6 to 10 drops.

How To Use

Fill the wound with the mixture. Whatever side its gaping try to seal towards the wound not away from it using the Steri Strips or close and tape or bandage. Don’t touch it  for 24-48 hours. Then remove the strips or bandages and add more skin glue. DO NOT REMOVE THE OLD GLUE just add more. Do this until healed.

Why use glass water bottles? Because much of the plastic we use for food containers and bottled water is made from dangerous chemicals. The problem being that over time they can escape into food and liquid.  If you’ve ever put anything into a plastic container that had held say onions for example, you’ll quickly learn this basic concept.  Your food will take on the flavor of onions.  (I can verify that onion flavored cake is not all that great.)  If you drink water regularly, which you should, you might consider tossing the plastic bottles and switching to glass.

Plastics made from polycarbonate resin, which a great many are, can leach bisphenol-A (BPA), a strong endocrine disrupter, into its contents. Studies show that BPA negatively affects reproductive organs, such as the breasts and prostate, as well as causing potential heart problems. As a side note BPA is also used in the protective coatings that line the inside of many metallic beverage containers.

NOTE ON ESSENTIAL OILS

I am not affiliated with any brand of oil and you will find Young Living, Doterra, Plant Therapy and others in my herb closet. You can use whatever brand you like. However, the higher quality oils require less due to how they are manufactured. (Hence why they tend to cost more.) For brands like Doterra you only need about 1/3rd the amount of drops to be effective. Compare sizes, costs with drops to decide which one to buy that fits your budget.

I have a close friend who is a trained herbalist and creates her own salves etc. This is what she told me:

“One to two drops of a Doterra in 8 oz. [or other high quality oil] is plenty for use as an anti-bacterial. You need five to ten for a cheaper brand. For example, for a healing product you would have to use 60 -70 drops per gallon with other brands. With Doterra you would only use 12-15 drops.”

Aloe Vera Gel: The Aloe Vera plant is wonderful for using in hand sanitizer because of its powerful antioxidant and antibacterial benefits. Plus it’s great for the skin and is also widely used or healing burns. This will make your sanitizer thick but it’s optional.

Tea Tree Oil: Also known as melaleuca oil, this is one of the most powerful and safe antibacterials available. (Natural or otherwise.) There are other oils that have the same property but I always use tea tree. Why? Because it will heal MRSA and did so for my son saving him the loss of his finger.

Distilled Water: You can use tap water for mixing your sanitizer but if the mixture is not used up within a few weeks it can start to putrefy. Tap water is filled with microbes and possible contaminants. Distilled water has been stripped of everything so there is nothing to “go bad”. Hence why it’s used in all herbal creations.

Containers: You can purchase various types of small empty containers at most stores including dollar stores. Or just use an empty container from something else. Because this mixture is not exact and is very forgiving you can make a larger batch easily by adjusting the amounts. It doesn’t matter if you use 10 or 15 drops of tea tree oil. It will work great!

As is a good idea for anything you’ve not used before, test these items separately on a small patch of skin.

Ingredients: Distilled Water,  Tea Tree Oil

Instructions: Fill your  spray bottle with distilled water. For 4 to 6 oz size use 1 to 2 drops of higher quality oil or 6 to 8  of lower quality oil. (You do not have to be exact.) Mix well. Adjust as needed for size.

Use: Spray lightly on hands and rub all over. Let them air dry. Use whenever desired.

I’ve drank a quart for breakfast for years and Roy does too.  We’ll give you all our hints and tips for the yummiest green drink ever. In a blender add:

  • 1 1/2 cup water
  • 4 to 6 ice cubes
  • 1 full head romaine (bottom trimmed off)
  • 1 huge handful baby spinach
  • 1 large frozen ripe banana
  • Blend till smooth and creamy. Makes 1 quart for 1 person. Drink immediately.   If it’s not sweet enough add a little honey.

This recipe is very forgiving and you can add or take away all kinds of things. Try to keep this goal in mind: getting a large amount of nutrient rich  dark greens into your body.  You should drink a FULL QUART of this at once. Super easy to do because it’s so yummy.blank630x20

Good Blender. After burning out 2 or 3 normal blenders we finally invested in a Vita-Mix many years back.  They last forever and will blend anything. Plus they do a lot more than just small.grinderblend stuff, including grinding flour! However, those are not in everyone’s budget so just make sure your blender can blend frozen fruit.

Mini Coffee Grinder (optional) I use this exact one for grinding my flax seed. It’s also very handy for grinding nuts, herbs etc.

THE GREEN SMOOTHIE RECIPE BASE

Try to use organic greens if affordable and available.

1 1/2 Cup water with 4-6 ice cubes

Frozen Bananas. Using frozen bananas is what makes your drink sweet, rich and creamy.  Freeze them extra ripe The riper they are the sweeter they are. We buy bananas in bulk, peel them and then cut them into 1″ to 2 ” pieces and freeze in 1 gallon freezer bags, one layer thick.  Each day we grab what we need for our smoothies.  I typically use enough pieces to make 1 full banana. The more you use the thicker and sweeter it gets!

Romaine Lettuce, a full head with the bottom cut off.

Baby Spinach. As spinach is very tame in flavor use a HUGE handful!

OPTIONAL ADDITIONS

A lot of what you use in your green smoothie recipe is done to taste. So go easy on things until you decide what amounts you like best.

Kale  is a super food, meaning it’s one of the most nutrient rich foods on the planet. If you can use it, do so. Keep in mind it does have a  very strong flavor so I only use a small handful. That way you don’t taste it.

small.flax.seedFlax seed.  This is another super food and  I always add 1 TB of ground flax seed to each smoothie.  Never buy this pre-ground because as soon as you grind it, it  starts losing its nutrients. I have a tiny electric coffee grinder that sits on my counter, as mentioned above. It gets used daily for this purpose. You could also use flax oil in place of the ground seeds. Flax gives you those Omega 3’s our bodies so desperately need which is why I add it to all our smoothies. FYI: The outer shell of the tiny flax seed is so tough it cannot be digested which is why you have to grind it.

Cacao Powder We use this when we want a chocolate smoothie. Or just toss in a little cocoa powder.

Psyllium Husk You can add 1 tsp of this into your smoothie. I mainly use it because it’s an item I keep on hand all the time. It’s pure fiber. If you choose to use less bananas this will help make your drink thick.

Other Frozen Fruits: Blue berries (another super food and it makes your drink a pretty purple).  Frozen strawberries are great also. Remember, frozen fruits make your drink thicker.

We’ve also used 1/2 a fresh mango on occasion. Gives it a wonderful flavor and adds to the sweetness.

SWEETENERS (IF NEEDED)

If you use plenty of ripe bananas your drink will be very sweet but if you use less you may want to use some added sweetness.  You can add in a small amount of honey, Stevia, agave nectar or Xylitol We’ve used every one of these at various times, my favorite being Xylitol due to it’s benefits to teeth. (See our post Kiss Your Dentist Goodbye!)   The protein powder below also sweetens your smoothie and you only need 1/2 scoop for 1 quart of smoothie.

This is completely optional and I only mention it because Roy and I have got spoiled using it the past year.  It’s a plant based ultra-nutritious powder.  Keep in mind you get high level of protein from dark greens so it’s not needed for that reason but it has other nutrients plus it’s sweetened with Stevia and comes in vanilla and chocolate. If you prefer to not add a lot of fruit into your green drink this does a wonderful job of sweetening and flavoring it.  We prefer the chocolate and we only use 1/2 a scoop per quart which is perfect.

Getting Rid of Roaches

Bay Leaves: Purchase bay leaves in the cooking section. If you buy them as whole leaves you want to crush them up to work best. Just sprinkle the crushed leaves where

the roaches are. Place them under sinks and in corners.

Catnip: Grab some catnip in the local pet section. Sprinkle it in areas where roaches are, again, in corners and under cabinets. Iowa State University scientists found that catnip is 100 times more effective than DEET at repelling roaches.

Peppermint Oil: Spiders will avoid this stuff. Fill a spray bottle with water and add in 10 to 15 drops of oil until it smells very minty. Spray the water in cracks and gaps where the spiders enter. You can also place drops of peppermint oil on cotton balls and put those in areas where spiders enter.

White Distilled Vinegar:Place 3 parts vinegar and 1 part water in a spray bottle. Spray and saturate counter tops, cupboards, window frames, door frames etc. Let sit 30 minutes and wipe up the extra, leaving the surface still damp. Allow remaining vinegar to dry. SMELL: if you don’t like the smell of vinegar it will dissipate after a few hours.   Respray as needed for your home but this should keep the spiders out a good long while. (Also works for ants. See below.) You’ll quickly learn how often you need to spray to keep your home spider free.

Cinnamon: This repels ants wonderfully as it disrupts the pheromone trail they use to navigate. If you sprinkle it around the edges of places they come in and under cabinets, the ants will not cross over it or come into areas surrounded by it.  If you have ants, use it and see what quickly happens!

Chalk: This contains calcium carbonate which repels ants (and slugs). You can use regular chalk sticks to draw a line around any place you do not want them to cross.

A Bartholin cyst is very painful and difficult to treat and many women have had little success with traditional medicine. This treatment was used by someone I know personally and I followed along with them during the entire duration of their condition. I’ll tell you the details of her experience and how she was able to virtually cure her Bartholin cyst naturally. As usual, we remind you that everyone is different and your success may differ. However, this is an inexpensive and very safe treatment to test. It’s certainly much less painful and intrusive than the standard medical treatments which many times don’t help at all.

Bartholin Cyst: What It Is (The nitty gritty details)

The Bartholin glands are in a woman’s genitals located on both sides of the folds of the labia that surround the vagina. These glands secrete a small amount of fluid. If a Bartholin duct gets blocked, fluid builds up in the gland and it creates a cyst. These cysts can typically be pea sized to marble size and are generally not treated as long as there are no unpleasant symptoms. They can also go away by themselves unless they are so large they cause discomfort. However, the cyst can becomes infected and it will slowly grow larger up to the size of an egg and become very painful. The typical treatment is to cut the cyst open under local anesthesia and drain it which is incredibly painful to have done. But as they seldom heal the problem, it tends to come back requiring further draining.  Note: The following is a drawing of the location of the cyst and how it looks.  (Graphic)

Symptoms of a cyst that is not infected
• A lump in the area.
• Redness or swelling in the area.
• Discomfort when you sit, walk, or have sex.

Symptoms of an infected cyst include:
• It becomes more and more painful.
• Fever and chills.
• Swelling in the area.
• The cyst can drain.

Stress is the #1 contributor to Bartholin Cysts and a poor diet is the #2 contributor (as in lots of meat, dairy, sugar and processed foods.) blank630x20

Actual Experience

My friend who experienced this went to her doctor numerous times as her cyst kept coming back. She had it drained four times which was a very unpleasant experience. The only other option she was given was to have the duct surgically closed, because having it repeatedly drained will eventually lead to scar tissues building up.  However, she had read about many women who had that done and they said it caused other problems afterwards and the cyst even came back on occasion. So her quest was to find a way to naturally heal it.

Here are a few things she found that were suggested that she tried and  that did not work:

  • Drawing Salve
  • Epsom Salts baths
  • Sillica
  • Tea Tree and Lavender Oil
  • Homeopathics

The Cure

My friend finally read an in-depth article on using Apple Cider Vinegar. The information she found said it would take three full months to work. She hated the taste of vinegar so she bought Vinegar capsules and took two capsules three times a day.  It was at the exact three month mark when her cyst went down tremendously from the size of a quarter to the size of a dime and her symptoms stopped. Though a small cyst was still there the infection was gone. She continues to take the vinegar capsules. Her next step is to change her diet to a more plant based one which will most likely remove it completely.

NOTE: Along with the vinegar she was supposed to take 1tb of the Black Strap Molasses once a day, but after a few days gave it up as it tasted awful.

WHAT TO TAKE

  • Apple Cider Vinegar Capsules,  2 Capsules 3x a day with meals   (The link is the exact brand she used.)
  • Take a daily Vitamin C or drink orange juice as the citrus helps your body absorb the vinegar.
  • Black Strap Molasses 1 TB a day (She didn’t take this,  but her cyst still went down. It was strongly suggested in the remedy she had researched.)

Remember, everyone is different and your results may differ. Make sure to be patient. It takes THREE MONTHS to work. But it’s virtually painless and simple to do.  Good luck and be well!blank630x20

If you’re trying to move towards less harmful ways of treating pain and inflammation the herb White Willow Bark is a great choice. I’ve used it for years in place of aspirin and Tylenol. White willow bark can relieve both chronic and acute pain and is used for a variety of conditions from lower back pain,  neuralgia, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis to headaches, toothaches and menstrual pain. You can purchase and take White Willow Bark in a variety of forms including tinctures, teas and capsules.  As with most herbs it takes a little longer to work but the effects last much longer. And again, you don’t have the dangerous side effects.

As with pretty much anything, it requires wisdom and not taking it excessively.  Below are a few things to watch out for and also an informative link with more details.

  • It’s suggested to not give to children under 16 because of the theoretical possibility of Reye’s Syndrome which can develop from taking normal aspirin.
  • Don’t use it with normal aspirin or NSAIDs .
  • Don’t take it if you have any type of allergy to aspirin.
  • It’s possible it can interact negatively with other chemically created drugs.

I use various brands but the brand NOW White Willow Bark Capsules are highly rated on a variety of herbal shops around the web and I’ve used that one many times.  I keep both the tincture and capsules on hand, as seen in the photo below that I took in herbal closet.  I currently have a higher mg Vitacost brand but normally I use the NOW 400 mg.  Take White Willow Bark as directed on the bottle.

Do you love bedtime or hate it? If it’s the latter I’m guessing the reason might be that you have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep. At its worst, bedtime can be a nightmare (excuse the pun.) Considering how important sleep is, you should welcome that time of day so we’ve got some great ideas to help you out in that area.

For myself, I literally look forward to bedtime every day. I’ve turned my room into a mini oasis for Roy and I and just walking into it feels good. At night I have my small ritual of turning down the sheets and brushing my teeth (with this method which can heal cavities). Then I get undressed and curl up under the covers and grab my Kindle that I keep on the nightstand. I usually have two or three things I’m reading at one time… a couple of non-fictions on my current topics of interest and then a novel that I can get lost in. I’ll read a bit in the nonfiction then end up with the novel until I fall asleep. It’s pure heaven, especially after a stressful day.

Unfortunately, sleep problems are fairly common especially when you consider that about 10 million Americans use drugs to help them sleep. A large portion of those who have trouble sleeping is due to lifestyle issues… stress, diet, smoking, caffeine etc. If you struggle with insomnia, or staying asleep, we’ve got some much less harmful ideas to help you out!blank630x20

Tips If You Have Trouble Sleeping

Most of the product links are to the actual products I use myself or a good quality replacement.

  1. Darken the Bedroom. Studies have shown that even a small light from a clock can disrupt your body’s sleep patterns.  I’ve  used these blackout curtains on my windows for years. FYI Blackout curtains come in ALL colors! As I also have some electronics in my room I use black electrical tape to cover the little lights on them. If you have to have a clock consider covering  it with a flap of black construction paper that can be flipped up when needed.
  2. Sleep mask. If you can’t darken your room use a sleep mask. We also have a tutorial on how to make a sleep mask.
  3. Lavender oil Taking a whiff of lavender oil before sleep. Studies have shown that lavender is wonderful for helping you relax. I normally put some on my hand to sniff as I go to sleep or I’ve put some on a Kleenex and placed it in my pillow.  This is wonderful for kids too!
  4. White noise. I have a fan on me at night which acts as white noise. I love the wind and it helps me sleep. The noise also does. You can purchase little sound machines very inexpensively that have a variety of sounds you can turn on at night. Try falling asleep to the sound of rain or wind…
  5. Chamomile tea before bed. Warm drinks (non-caffeinated) in general can help you sleep. Chamomile is a relaxing herb so having a cup of that before bed can be very helpful. Sweeten with a little honey if needed.
  6. Buckwheat Pillow Buckwheat pillows have a myriad of benefits for sleep and many people swear by them. The drawback is they are a bit pricey for good organic ones. Read up on them and see if they might help you.
  7. The Bedroom. Make your room a place you love being in. You can see how I did this on our Budget Bedroom Makeover Series here.
  8. The Ritual. Bedtime needs to be a special event and setting up a ritual  can help. For example soaking in a warm bath with candles before going to sleep. Put a special lotion on your hands and arms. Wear nice pajamas. Listen to soothing music. Do a short meditation or pray. Many things on this list can be part of your ritual. Doing the same thing every night can be comforting and calming.
  9. The Right Temperature. Keep the room temp no higher than 70 degrees. Studies show people sleep best in cool rooms.
  10. Ear Plugs. If you wake easily to small noises a high quality set of earplugs will fix you right up!
  11. Read a book. Reading makes many like myself sleepy at night. Also, if I wake in the night and my mind is racing I will actually read on my Kindle a little to put myself back to sleep. As it’s back-lit I don’t have to turn on a light.
  12. Socks. Wear extra soft and cozy socks. If you have trouble with nighttime waking, wearing socks to sleep in can help. Cool room… but warm feet!
  13. Melatonin. This is a wonderful supplement that I’ve used on occasion with great success. Melatonin is a natural hormone secreted by the pineal gland in the brain to help you sleep. Taking 1 to 3 mg an hour before bed can help induce sleep naturally. (It has a variety of other health benefits including fighting cancer.)
  14. Quick Meditation. If you wake during the night do this instant meditation to relax you and help you fall back to sleep. As you lie in bed with eyes closed pay close attention to your normal breathing. As you breath in, silently repeat in your mind “breath in”.  As you breath out, silently repeat “breath out”.  Do this over and over with each normal breath until you fall asleep. This is a powerful quick form of focused meditation to clear your mind and relax your body.
  15. Acupressure. Massage your earlobes SLOWLY between fingers for about 30 seconds each before bed.  Press the wrist points on each wrist as shown in the picture before bed.  Doing both of these should help you sleep better.

Worrying?

If the reason you can’t sleep is tied with worry and not being able to shut your brain off you need to distract it. As I mentioned I do this by reading on my Kindle if I wake up in the night and my brain is trying to worry. I love Dale Carnegie’s quote. You don’t’ have to actually get up. You just have to distract your brain.

Of course a good diet with exercise will also greatly help your quality of sleep.  When you don’t get enough quality sleep it effects every aspect of your life and your health.  We hope some of these ideas will give you a boost and help you get the much needed rest your body, mind and spirit needs!

We’re going to show you another way to use it by making your own cinnamon oil. It’s super easy and a lot less expensive than buying it!

Supplies

Approximate measurements are 2 cups extra virgin olive oil and 5 to 10 sticks depending on size. I just toss in sticks and cover them with olive oil. (I use sticks because it is less messy and much easier to work with.)

  • Good quality cinnamon sticks.
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Clear jar for the first part of the process.
  • Amber or green colored glass jar.* For storage after its made.  Wide mouthed is easiest to fit the sticks into. (Always store oils in a dark glass jar. No plastic. The jar must be dark because any light will affect the oil and make it lose its properties.)  Glass is always best as the oil can draw in chemicals from plastic.

NOTE: If you can’t get a dark jar, use a clear jar. If you can’t get a jar use plastic. Despite the fact that a dark jar is best use what you have. Just store your oil in a dark cool place.

*Some food items and vitamins come in dark glass bottles such as vinegar’s, cooking oils, alcoholic beverages etc.  You can use an empty one of those to hold your oil. Most will have small openings.

  1. Place your cinnamon sticks in a pan and barely cover them with olive oil. The amounts do not have to be exact.  A good estimate is 5 to 10 sticks for every 2 cups oil.
  2. Bring the oil to a simmer. (DO NOT BOIL as olive oil is damaged by high heat.) Simmer your sticks for 2 to 3 hours.
  3. Place the oil and sticks into a clear glass jar. Cover and let it sit for about 3 weeks in a warm spot or window sill where it will get light, gently turning the jar upside down a couple times every day.  The warmth further helps extract the cinnamon.
  4. Place the oil in a dark jar to preserve it. Store the oil in a cool dry place. You can either remove the sticks or keep them in during storage. I remove them once they turn a lighter color. That means all the goodies are extracted.

The oil will last for 1 year.

NOTES: This oil is not as strong as essential oils nor as fragrant. But it still has great medicinal properties and can be used as you would regular essential oil. It can also be taken internally.  Test when using on skin as cinnamon is a “hot” spice, but this version is fairly tame. You can also skip the simmering step and just let the sticks soak for three weeks but the heating makes the oil much stronger and more medicinal.

Pour olive oil over cinnamon sticks to cover.

Fill spray bottle with distilled water and add oil or oils of choice. Shake gently to mix.

If you use a larger or smaller bottle simply adjust the amounts above. These are estimates. You can’t do this wrong. If you feel you want more oil in your spray, use it! You could also use less if desired. 20 drops is simply an average.

Water & Oil Choices

Distilled water is typically used for things of this nature because it has no impurities. Regular tap water has things in it that will cause the water to go putrid over time. Boiled water works well also, let it cool before using.

There are a variety of brands of essential oils available. As far as aroma goes the inexpensive one’s work very well. High quality oils tend to work better for illnesses, however, purchase what you can afford.  I’ve used Doterra brand for my high end healing but for things such as this I’ve also used Plant Therapy brand as they are much less expensive and have great reviews. I’ve also used other brands in a pinch.

For the purpose of this spray there are a variety of oils you can choose from, all of which will remove odors and freshen the air.  They have added spiritual and energy benefits too, which I will list below.

Sage – for clearing and purifying a space. I’ve used this one alone for a “Smokeless Smudging” spray.

Lavender – for disinfecting, purifying, and promoting relaxation.

Rosemary – for protecting and detoxifying

Frankincense – This is one of the most powerful oils for healing which is why it tends to cost more. It can not only kill bacteria and fungus in the air but it’s a strong negative energy remover.

Lemon – Another oil that is anti-microbial and also increases positive energy in a space.

Cypress – For breaking up super stagnant energy and creating “flow”.  Great if you’ve moved into a home that has been previously occupied.

 

Benefits

Essential oils are perfect for removing odors and stale air and they do so without chemicals. It’s proven that certain odors affect our moods. Essential oils are of such concentrated quality they do this wonderfully.  Many of them are also germ killers despite being completely safe for our bodies. Use this room spray a lot during cold season!

Did you know the cinnamon in your cupboard is not real cinnamon at all? I sure didn’t. I learned that it’s actually another spice known as cassia and is sometimes referred to as “bastard cinnamon”, which in all honesty seems a bit harsh. But real cinnamon is called Ceylon (pronounced sell-own). I had heard about it before and assumed it would pretty much taste the same. Then I finally bought some. Oh… my…. gosh. It’s incredible! Coumarin: All cinnamon has this substance in it. If eating cinnamon in large amounts, in incredibly rare cases it can damage the liver in people who are very sensitive. If you want to eat a lot of cinnamon, which by the way is great for you, consider using Ceylon as it has only a minor amount of this substance in it.

Fill the spray bottle with 1 oz. apple cider vinegar and 1 oz. rubbing alcohol. (the mixture is 1 to 1) Add in 4 drops tea tree oil.

Spray your feet morning and night or whenever you desire and lightly spray the insides of your shoes after taking them off.

SHOE SACHETS

In a small bowl add 1/4 c baking soda. Add 2 or 3 drops Tea Tree oil into it and mix well.

Shake down the tea and cut a thin slice off the top of the bag.

Scoop in 1 to 2 tsp of the baking soda mixture in with the tea.

Fold the top of the bag over and glue.

You can glue on a ribbon if desired to make it pretty.

This is one of those things that feels magical. I was taught how to do it years ago by a close friend who is a master healer.  (You might remember her from this post about healing MRSA.) It is a form of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), a treatment psychologists use to heal trauma. But you can do quickly and for free. It’s based on where painful memories are kept in the brain and it utilizes eye movement to literally “reprogram” the brain concerning past experiences.  These experiences and your emotional attachment to them are stored primarily in one side of your brain… the irrational, emotional side. By deeply reliving the experience while activating both sides of your brain (the back and forth motion) your brain processes the experience, making it easier to deal with and reprogramming your brain’s old ties to that initial feeling. And it can have phenomenal results!

Please give it a try!Being human, stress, fear and worry is common for most of us.  Sometimes certain things we experience are so incredibly painful that we’re traumatized, and we can carry the emotions from the experience with us for years, if not for our entire lives.  We’ll try to put on a happy face, but there’s deep pain going on underneath.  Emotions are incredibly powerful, having the ability to make us physically sick.  At the very least, negative experiences that we carry with us affect how we function and view the world.  Someone being vivaciously cruel, unfair or downright mean is something that can stick with us, especially if the trauma happened when we were children.  My hope is that you will have peace and find some relief and heal depression, fear, anger and anxiety using this method.

The Steps to Heal Depression, PTSD, Anxiety & More

Please read the key points, the instructions and watch the video before doing the exercise.

Supply Needed (as in just one)

A black pencil or marker. Sharpie markers are perfect if you have one. The black top makes it easy to focus on. You want something that your eyes can easily see and that will not blend into the background.

  1. Go to a quiet place. You can sit or stand.
  2. Decide on the experience you would like to heal.
  3. Close your eyes and think of the issue that upsets you or causes you emotional pain or suffering.  Recall the most uncomfortable part of the situation and feel it deeply.
  4. Once you do this open your eyes.
  5. If you suffer from emotional pain, depression or anxiety due to experiences you have had in your past, this 60 second exercise might have miraculous results for you.  It can help heal depression, PTSD and more. Please give it a try!Either you or someone else holds the marker up at eye level about 1 1/2 feet away from you and moves it from side to side in front of you going as far as each shoulder, back and forth.  You need to follow the top of the marker with your eyes, but do NOT move your head. Each swipe should take about one second.  You will do this for 30 seconds, or 30 swipes. Try to just let your mind empty and focus only on the marker or pen while you do this.
  6. When you’re done take a deep breath and try to recall the awful feelings you had before you started.
  7. You shouldn’t be able to.
  8. Though you will remember the event it should not have the strong emotional effect anymore.

 

 

Key Points

  • You should only have to do this once per issue, though you can certainly do it more if you feel you need to.
  • You don’t have to delve into the reasons why you feel the way you do. It’s immaterial as far as this exercise is concerned.
  • It’s important that you want to change the feelings you have. This can be tricky for some things such as anger. You have to want to let go of the anger towards someone, even if you’ve not been able to as of yet. Sometimes we hold onto it because we feel the other person is “getting away with it” if we don’t. If that’s the case you will find it difficult to heal.
  • This is generally used for extreme situations which cause us severe emotional turmoil  or things that you realize shouldn’t be a big deal but for some reason they eat away at you.
  • It’s nice to have someone help you with this but you can do it alone as shown.
  • Of course everyone is different and while  amazing things can  happen from doing this there will always be a chance, for whatever reason, that it might not work well for you. But it’s simple and it’s free. If you’re suffering emotionally in any way, please give it a try.blank630x20 blank630x20

I don’t mind bugs in general but when they attack me I draw the line.  I do that with a natural bug repellant because you should never  use standard bug repellant as that is basically putting poison directly into your body. Granted it’s not enough to kill you immediately, but I’m pretty sure even a little poison isn’t a good thing.  DEET is a main ingredient in these sprays. It’s so poisonous that  the Environmental Protection Agency says you should wash it off your skin when you go back inside.  Creams and liquids placed on your skin are absorbs into the body through the pores.  Hence, there are a variety of drugs that are given via a patch. 20 drops Eucalyptus Oil  (This oil repels the most bugs i.e. ticks, mosquitoes and gnats)

If you can’t remember when you went barefoot for at least 20 minutes please read on, because a growing number of doctors and podiatrist are speaking out about the negative impact of shoes on our overall health and how going barefoot can work wonders!

I’ve gone barefoot since I was a kid and still do as you can see below. (I didn’t even wear shoes to my daughter’s wedding.) I had no idea about the importance of this until I read Born to Run. (You don’t need to be a runner to benefit from this book. I wasn’t.)  A few months back Roy had told me one of the things that attracted him to me was that I had great posture. He finds good posture in women sexy. I contribute that to going barefoot and I’m certain I’ve avoided many other  problems because of it.

Yes you need arch support. Shoes, no matter how expensive, give the incorrect type. An arch is a structure that can support weight over an open space. It does this by giving support on either end of that space. Shoes do the opposite. Your feet need your own arch to support your body and the way that happens is your heel must be level with the toes. The back support of typical shoes  is always higher than the front and the foot is forced to adapt with harmful results. The more cushioned the shoe, the less protection it offers.  Your body is made to take care of itself, not have misguided help with padded shoes and arch supports which only service to weaken and distort the feet.  Even more damage is caused, because when you have padding of any type under your feet, the feet and legs naturally come down hard as they search for stability. This constant shock and jarring is what causes many injuries.

Many times the things we fear are not based on much reality. Yes, stepping on gravel or a stone will hurt a little. But you’ll rub your foot and move on. You seldom if ever see broken glass lying around. If you do… don’t step on it. There are certainly times when you have to wear shoes. Just try to be barefoot as much as possible! Stepping on a stick or stone will smart for a few seconds… but then you forget about it. The facts are, years of wearing and running in shoes does long lasting damage and causes a myriad of injuries. The bottoms of your feet get thicker and stronger the more you go barefoot. Things you could not bear to walk on before due to your tender tootsies will become a non-issue!

This is probably one of those huge lies for profit and it’s easily seen in the running community.  Runners have an incredibly high injury rate… 65% to 85%! For the greater part, these injuries are caused when running in shoes. When you do so your feet strike the ground heel first as they try to adapt to the uneven and unnatural padding.  This puts incredible strain on the feet, legs body and joints with a constant jarring effect. When you run barefoot your gait is changed and the ball of your foot hits first in a very fluid motion which is how it’s meant to be. Injuries such as plantar fasciitis, shin splints disappear. The more expensive the shoes the worse the injuries in most cases. (Bernard, Marti, M.D. Study) Companies create running shoes for one reason only. Profit.

Correcting Foot Problems: Your feet will adapt and become more stable and strong. Flat feet, fallen arches and high arches will even out. Feet are healthier and less stinky when not kept constantly in a dark damp container where bacteria and fungus thrive. Dr. Mark Cucuzzella had arthritis in his toes so bad his doctor told him to give up running. He learned about barefoot running and studied it intensely. By running barefoot he was able to run pain-free and injury-free for the first time in many years. He continues to do so today.

Posture: Because of wearing shoes, most people adopt a pelvic tilt to maintain balance. This is because even tennis shoes have a heel that is higher than the front of the shoe and therefore you’re are not walking flat as intended. So you must Reflexologyadjust to keep balance. Walking without shoes means you no longer have to do that and your posture becomes much better.

Reflexology:  Reflexology is where the nerve endings on the bottom of the feet are pressed to stimulate many of the healing processes in the body including the immune system. It can also reduce inflammation and  pain, lower blood pressure and relieve stress and tension. When you go barefoot this is done automatically! The benefits to the body due to all the points on your feet hitting the hard ground regularly is innumerable. Going barefoot means a stronger body, better posture, less joint pain, more mobility and greater health.

EarthingEarthing: You may or may not have heard this term in relationship to the body and health. The earth carries a natural negative charge. This is why we ground many electrical devices in our homes. If you’ve ever gotten a natural shock by touching someone or something you’ve experiences your body’s way of trying to discharge the unwanted electricity it’s taken in. Just like our appliances, if we have direct contact with the ground it allows us to discharge the same way, removing free radicals. Bare feet allow you to do this constantly.

The Bottom Line

Give it a try. Take off your shoes and go barefoot for a few hours every week, especially on the grass. If you’re a runner read up on it and try it barefoot. Stopping heart attacks and bleeding are just a couple things that cayenne can do for you. (As if that’s not enough!) Apple Cider Vinegar is likewise incredibly beneficial in a variety of ways.  It’s wonderful for reducing acidity in the body which is the cause of many diseases. It’s antibacterial and can also reduce blood pressure and relieve heartburn. The benefits are too many to list. It’s best if you use Bragg’s Apple Cider vinegar for it’s quality.  It’s organic, raw and unfiltered which means it has all of it’s healing qualities  intact. We’ve only used their brand for years for all our cooking and other needs.

Honey is the third super food ingredient in our shots. It’s full of vitamins, minerals and enzymes which boost the immune system and also protect the body against bacteria. It helps cleanse the liver, remove toxins and aids in weight loss to name a few.

Needless to say, the combination of these three super foods is phenomenally beneficial to the body when taken every day.  I LOVE this stuff. When I swallow!thriftstore my dose it wakes me up and gives me energy. I’m not a drinker but I imagine that initially feeling of drinking it might be like a shot of whiskey or some other strong alcohol.

Additional Info On Cayenne

I never go anywhere without having cayenne tincture on me because of the previous stated benefits that it will stop a heart attack and bleeding immediately.  It can literally save a life. As a preventative measure you can take “Cayenne Shots” three times a day. They are very easy to make. Honey, vinegar, water and cayenne.

TYPES OF CAYENNE
Generally speaking for healing purposes you want medicinal grade cayenne.  Cayenne is measured by HU (heat units) Typical cayenne is about 20,000 to 45,000 HU. Medicinal grade is 90,000 HU or higher.  However, because these shots use vinegar and honey which are also beneficial to the body you can use typical food grade cayenne. The vinegar will make the medicinal grade a bit hot coming out… if you know what I mean. I only use the 90,000 myself and it does not effect me strongly as I’m used to it.  But if you’re not, just use regular cayenne like you get in the baking section. You will still reap benefits.   You can use the regular for a while and then start working into the medicinal grade once you’ve built up a tolerance.

IMPORTANT

Cayenne is of course HOT. The medicinal grade is HOTTER. It is not dangerous and in fact is wonderful for healing ulcers… but it will sure burn the bejeebers out of your mouth and take your breath away if you don’t build up slowly to the right dose.   I’ve seen guys do this thinking they were all macho and start at way too high a dose. Baaaaad move. You need to start with a very, very low dose. The standard dose you can work up to is 1 tsp per 2 TB of drink.  Start out at a scant 1/8th teaspoon and increase it SLOWLY every few days.  Even with my high tolerance for heat, when I’ve not taken it for a while I start at the low dose and build up again.

Now it will still be hot. You can chase it with some milk or better yet a healthy milk alternative like soy, rice or almond milk. (Water doesn’t help much.)  You can build up tolerance easily until you get to 1 tsp per dose.  If you hate vinegar you may want to just hold your nose, gulp and chase with a drink. Its beyond worth it for your heart and your health.

Recipes

I will give instructions for a single dose so you can test the waters with it before making the  larger batch.

SINGLE DOSE

  • 2 TB warm water
  • 1 TB apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tsp. honey
  • Cayenne: For just starting out add a scant 1/8th tsp. Slowly build up to the final dosage of 1 tsp if you can over a few weeks time.

 Mix all above well and drink immediately chasing with milk type product if desired.  The warm water helps the honey dissolve quickly. Cayenne does NOT dissolve in water. So mix and drink it fast so it doesn’t separate from the liquid.

 

TO MAKE 32 OUNCES

Dose is one shot glass or 2TB worth three times a day. Can be kept on the counter for weeks.

  • 2 Cups Bragg’s Vinegar
  • 2 Cups Warm Water
  • 2/3 Cup Honey
  • Cayenne as shown below. Start with 1 TB and increase dose by 1TB each week until you reach 10 TB or 2/3rds a cup for the 32 oz batch. 1 TB.  (Approximately 1/8th tsp per dose.) 2 TB Cayenne (approximately 1/4th  tsp per dose.) 3 TB Cayenne (approximately 1/3rd tsp per dose) 4 TB   etc. increasing each week till you reach 10 TB if you can tolerate it. (2/3rds cup) You MUST shake the bottle before each dose as the cayenne does not dissolve and will  separate from the liquid. (Believe me, you do NOT want swallow a mouthful of just cayenne.) If you decide that the full dose is too much cayenne for you even after slowly increasing by all means cut the above amounts in half. You’ll still get benefits.

How To Stop Cravingsblank300x231(1)

Cravings… we all have ’em even if we’re not on a diet. But when you’re trying to cut back on certain things that’s when they really rear their ugly head. I recently went on a raw juice diet for two weeks so I had to deal with them a little bit. I’ve found some things that help a lot, especially if your trying to eat healthier.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Cravings are chemically induced  and generally caused by the chemicals that are purposely placed in processed foods to be addicting, sugar being the most addictive of all. (Which is why so many foods that are not even sweet have some form of it.) If you start eating better regularly, which includes eating more live plant based foods, cravings will go away as those chemicals will be flushed out of your body and no longer affect you.

Ever been hungry again soon after eating?  That will likewise go away on a more natural diet. You’re body signals hunger when it’s not receiving the nutrition it needs to thrive. Eating a more live plant based diet solves that problem quickly. Plus eating healthy live food just fills you up more for the calories!

Dealing With Hunger & Cravings

I’ve used most of these with great success. Everyone’s different however and what works for one person might not work for another.  They sure came in handy while I was doing my juice fast. I use some whether I’m fasting or not as they are just plain healthy. **FREE DOWNLOAD OF THESE TIPS BELOW**

 

  • Keep busy! This is the greatest tool you have. When you’re busy doing something you enjoy you don’t think about food.
  • Drink lots of water. This is  a no brainer but it stops stomach cramps and hunger pangs and  your body needs it!
  • Eat ice. I love crushed ice. I’ll fill a cup and munch on it while watching TV.
  • Eat flavored ice. I squirt some Stur Water Enhancer on my ice or in my water. Its fairly natural and sweetened with Stevia.  (BEWARE of anything sweetened with Aspartame. It’s a proven carcinogen.)
  • Use pressure points for appetite suppression. This video shows how.
  • Use Dill Oil on wrists to curb sugar cravings. I use this myself. It’s amazing!
  • When your really craving something substantial have a bowl of vegetable broth. Warm things satiate hunger better than cold. This is a delicious brand!
  • Freeze some raw fruit juice into popsicle using molds. I keep these on hand all the time.
  • Froth to the rescue! Make a small batch of fresh orange & apple juice using a juicer.  Eat the froth part slowly with a spoon before drinking.  It’s like whipped topping! Add crushed ice if desired.
  • If you’re dieting or doing a fast for a specific amount of time remind yourself the next few weeks or months are going to pass before you know it. You can be healthier at the end of it or not.
  • Watch inspiring videos, or read books, on eating healthy. This has been huge in inspiring Roy and I.  At the bottom of the post is a list of our favorite food related documentaries.
  • Chew gum. Xylitol gum is actually healthy for you!
  • Cravings tend to last about 20 minutes.  Always keep that in the back of your mind and something to distract yourself to let that time pass.
  • Brush your teeth. Yep, this one does indeed work great. You just don’t feel like eating after you’ve brushed your teeth.
  • Another oldie but goodie: Get rid of all the food that you know you shouldn’t be eating. Out of sight out of mind as they say. I have absolutely no problem not eating things that are not in the house.
  • Eat an apple. The soluble fiber in apples is called apple pectin. It reduces blood sugar crashes and can keep you full for 1-2 hours.
  • Drink one large glass of water with either 1-2 TB Wheat Bran OR 1-2 TB Rice Bran added. This will stop hunger for an hour or more and the bran is awesome for your colon!
  • Drink Green Tea between meals. It contains a phytonutrient called EGCG  that increases the hormone that makes you feel satiated.
  • Place a small dab of pepper on your tongue.  This triggers you’re food sensors telling them your eating something tasty. Hot sauce could work.

Remove the foam on the juice for making popsicle as it doesn’t freeze hard enough to hold the stick in solidly.

The pulp can be placed in a garbage disposal or in the trash. But if you feel bad tossing it out, remember your body also disposes of it once the nutrients are extracted.  You’re just skipping the step where the body has to do all that work itself. There are other ways you can utilize the pulp however.  If you have a garden it’s great for the compost heap! There are recipes that use pulp but I’ve only used one.  It’s a RAW carrot cake that uses carrot pulp as the main ingredient and it’s one of the most decadent and delicious desserts I’ve ever eaten. FOAM : THE WHIPPED TOPPING OF RAW JUICE

Yummy Foam On My JuiceWhen you juice fruits and vegetables with the Centrifugal juicer the spinning motion makes a head of foam on the top. Depending on the item juiced it will be different amounts.  This is one thing I’ve NEVER understood. Some folks don’t like that and remove it before drinking. HUH?!? It’s pure juice just whipped up a little. I’m guessing they equate it to something nasty in their heads somehow though I can’t imagine what it might be. It’s purely psychological though.

Raw Juice Foam With Crushed Ice YUMMMIn fact the foam is my FAVORITE PART and feels like I’m eating whipped topping! If I could turn a whole batch of juice into that foam I would. (In fact I’ve tried with one of those milk frothing devices. Didn’t work.)  Of course I like the foam the best on the sweeter juices but  it’s great on the vegetable juices too. I’ll even toss a little crushed ice in my juice sometimes and mix it into the foam. Pure ambrosia!

The large cup that comes with some juicers has a lid that will help strain off the foam. To me that’s like tossing juice down the drain. blank300x231(1)

JUICE STORAGE & SEPARATING

Juice Separation Is Natural and Fine!Your juice will start to separate a little if you let it sit. All that means is its pulling the lighter parts of the juice to the top and the heavier to the bottom. This is another one of those psychological things for some people. It tastes perfectly fine drinking it separated as its all still pure juice. If it bugs you just stir it often while drinking.

You can juice a batch to drink throughout the day if desired and even up to 48 hours. Just know that as soon as you juice your fruits and veggies they will start losing nutrients. The longer they are exposed to air the more they will lose. Does that mean you can’t store them? Of course not. Just be aware of that. You’ll also notice a lot of settling if you do that. Tips

Here are a few things I’ve learned and some previously mentioned things to remember.

  • Carrots are generally the cheapest and give the greatest yield of juice for your money. You can use these as a base for almost any type of juice.
  • Fruits and veggies can be combined with no problem. Some don’t go well together of course, but apples go with anything and are great for sweetening a variety of vegetable juices.
  • Place leafy vegetables between hard fruits or veggies when juicing to help the juice extract better.
  • Lemons or limes added to a green vegetable juice will remove the bitterness that some of them have.
  • Organic fruits and vegetables don’t need to be peeled before juicing.
  • If you’re doing a juice fast make sure you drink a lot of vegetables. Don’t just juice fruit only as it’s high in sugar content.
  • Dark, leafy greens are super foods and have incredible health benefits. Use a lot of them! Kale, Romaine, Baby Spinach, Etc.
  • Baby spinach can be added to any juice. You won’t taste it unless you use a very large amount in a very small amount of juice.
  • As soon as fruits and vegetables are juiced, or even cut, they begin to lose nutrients. Drink them as soon as possible. (Oxidation)
  • If you have to store juice, don’t do it for more than 48 hours.blank300x231(1)

 Favorite Recipes

I’m only listing a few because recipes are not really needed. If you buy a juicing book of recipes you’ll start to notice all the authors are doing is tossing in different fruits and veggies and naming the juice something cool. Sometimes they use specific one’s for their health benefit of course and that info could be useful to you. But as far as just basic juicing goes… juice what you like!   These two are a couple of standards I make. I change them up depending on what I have in the fridge. With some testing you’ll find juice mixtures you like better than others.

V5 JUICE (Similar to V8 only healthier.)

This is the only pure veggie juice I made that has no fruit in it at all. It’s hot which I love though you can leave out the Tabasco if you don’t care for hot things. Juice all the vegetables. When finished add in sea salt and Tabasco hot sauce to tastes.

  • 2 tomatoes
  • 1/4th red bell pepper
  • 1/6th chunk red onion
  • 1/2 large cucumber
  • 2 large carrots
  • Salt
  • Tabasco

Use any fruits you like. As I’ve also mentioned I almost always put in organic baby spinach into my fruit juices. It does not change the flavor and adds the extra nutritional bonus you get from dark greens.

Roy and Nancy Do Plants!

Been wanting to do something to improve your diet, get healthier and lose weight? Roy and I just started a Juice and Green Drink Fast  to do just that and we’ve decided to share our short journey along with other helpful information on how to do it.   Roy and I will document our progress for a few weeks while giving hints, tips, recipes, free downloads and other fun stuff should you want to try a fast or even just move into healthier eating. So hop on board for an informative and entertaining ride as you follow along with our wins and struggles. We’ll try to make it worth your while!

First off let us give you some background and why we started our juice and green drink fast. My guess is that many of you will relate to a lot of it.

I lost a good deal of weight a few years back. I only did one thing to lose it. I changed my diet. Weight loss was not my goal it, was just a side effect. I had done a lot of research to know what type of food the human body biologically needed to be the healthiest and heal.  I changed my diet because I was having a pain issue that I was trying to cure and being a firm believer that the body can heal itself of anything if treated properly and fed correctly, I did just that.

Without even trying I dropped 60 lbs in a matter of months. I was not exercising either which by the way, is kinda important.  But I was hurting too much to do so.

After the weight loss I looked great, if I do say so myself. But I still had my pain. That pain continued for several years as I tried a variety of natural methods to correct it. Now most things that are wrong with the body can be corrected fairly quickly with a change of diet, even more serious diseases. But some things take longer depending on their nature, i.e. structural things are tougher to heal.

I finally headed to a doctor as a last resort as I was suffering so much. An X-ray showed I had three back conditions. Arthritis of the spine, Scoliosis and Degenerative Disc Disease. They could do nothing for any of them. Now the arthritis is easy to help with diet. Degenerative disc disease is a bit harder. Scoliosis, harder yet. Despite the fact I’m pretty anti-pharmaceutical, but my doctor prescribe two low end pain drugs, Tramadol and Robaxin. I took these for a year however they helped minimally. I finally stopped taking them because I knew they were damaging my body and I was getting no relief.

I was unsure which of my conditions was causing the pain and I had to spend a great deal of time in bed. This did some pretty detrimental things to my metabolism. Though I was still eating well, no meat, no dairy, mostly plants and non-processed foods, I started to put on weight. I dug in and began to try even more natural treatments. It felt at times like I was making no progress. It was only when I could step back after a few months and look at the past few years as a whole that I saw the small improvements in my pain problem.

After an even longer period of time had gone by I kept eating as well as I could, with minor periods of being lax. I finally went back to a doctor again for a checkup. I told him of my struggles. He wanted to prescribe the same drugs I’d been given before. As it had been a while and I was desperate I decided to try them yet again. I started with only the Tramadol to see how I felt and lo and behold… it got rid of my pain. That was a HUGE progress. It also validated that what I’d been doing for so long was working albeit slowly.

There’s another very important effect of my more natural way of eating that I had incorporated years ago. I have not had a single cold in a decade. I don’t catch anything. My immune system is phenomenal. Which means my chances of any cancers, heart disease, diabetes etc is virtually none. Despite still having pain that was a big win I was after.

All I had to do now is keep working on healing so I could get off the meds for good and lose the extra weight. I buckled down on my eating habits. However, I wasn’t losing as much weight as I had the first time. I can only guess it was because my metabolism was shot from those years of not moving.

Recently I decided I needed to kick start things a bit with a juice fast. Which brings my story up to date.

Roy’s Story

Roy Rivers 2014As I’ve entered into my more mature years, (funny to hear myself say that because I still act and feel like I’m in my 30’s) I’ve been taking stock as to what’s going on with my body, and for the first time, in many ways, I’m realizing that the time is now to get some control of a few things that are going downhill.

I’ve noticed that my metabolism has really started to get sluggish.  As a musician, I find I’m much more creative in the evenings and late at night.  Probably because the house is all mine at that time.  No interruptions, less traffic noise, and the phone stops ringing as often.  It’s not unusual for me to be up until 2-3:00am.  The problem with this is that I often get hungry around midnight.  If I eat, I’m almost certain to get acid reflux in the night because my body isn’t digesting things like it used to.

Nancy has always had a better and deeper knowledge of health, disease prevention, and diet than me.  She’s always encouraged me to eat better.  We’ve had countless discussions about the state of our own health, the nation’s health, the way that food companies care about profits and selling more  of their products rather than the health of their customers. The role of big pharma and how practically every disease has its roots in diet.  I’ve watched lots of documentaries about the jaded and sadistic treatment of animals on factory farms, the way all the antibiotics, steroids, and disease transfers from these terrible conditions right to our dinner tables, the rise and power of companies that I consider criminal who are purposely misleading us… directly towards our death… for profit.  It’s no wonder we’re fat and sick as a nation.

As I’m looking at my overall health status and not liking what I see I’ve got some new resolve about my growing concern over the way I’m actually living.  There’s a vanity factor for sure, (I am an entertainer after all!) but for years I’ve pushed my health reality to the back of my mind.  I think it just wasn’t bugging me enough to do something substantial about it.  It bothers me to say it that way, but I think I just felt like I wasn’t at enough of a risk yet.  I also realize that I’ve been reacting in just the way I’ve been conditioned to act. Stress affects people in different ways. MY stress, my self-image, my deteriorating health, and my witnessing of how my health is changing my daily life is enough for me right now.  I’ve got to do something that’s more action and less talk.

Roy’s Green Drink Smoothie

Roy Makes A Green SmoothieHere is what I put in my green smoothie that I have twice a day. I tend to add less veggies whereas Nancy adds a lot more. But I’m new to this and need the added sweetness from fruit to ensure I’ll stay with it. I’ll gradually be increasing the veggies.

Place all these into a  blender and blend till smooth.  We use a Vitamix but any heavy duty blender should work.  We’ve linked to the actual items we purchase and use.

  • 1.5 cups of ice water,
  • 1/2 of a single stalk of organic Romaine lettuce
  • Small handful of organic Spinach
  • Small handful of organic Kale
  • 6 ice cubes
  • 5 pieces of frozen banana (about 1 whole banana),
  • 1tablespoon of powdered Psyllium Husk (Optional but great for fiber, thickening the smoothie and cleaning out the colon. It doesn’t affect taste at all.)
  • 1 tablespoon of a chocolate protein powder (Optional but I love the flavor. It helps sweeten it with Stevia.)

NOTES: You can add any frozen fruit you prefer. The key is to get as many greens in it as you can. Baby spinach has barely any flavor so you can add a really big handful and not taste it. It just makes your drink green.

For the first two weeks I drank only green drinks/smoothies and worked on doing some detoxing.  I have a green smoothie in the morning and evening. (Recipes coming!)  The first two days went fairly smoothly. On day 4 I started to detox and felt fluish, headachey and basically like crap for about three days. At the risk of being gross… I was also coughing up tons of crap. Ick. But it finally passed and I started feeling better.  Into the 3rd week  I started putting solid food back into my diet, but significantly healthier food.  I made a pot of pinto beans.  I made some healthy baked vegetable egg rolls and homemade hummus.  I’ve also gotten into eating oranges and apples.  I never liked fruit that much but I can’t believe how good those taste! My pallet is cleaning out and changing big time!  Also I’m noticing moments where I have greater clarity in my thinking which has been a bit foggy now for a while.

I started my fast a couple weeks after Roy, though the word “fast”  in both of our cases seems out of place when you’re taking in large amounts of nutrients. I have 4 or 5 large glasses of fresh fruit or veggie juice every day. The first 6 days were fairly easy. If my stomach started cramping from hunger, drinking a juice would stop it. I had a few cravings but just kept busy and they went away. On day 7 and 8 I had some pretty bad cravings and those were my hardest days so far.  But I’ve got some tips I’ll be sharing that help me through those times when I have them. Keeping busy is the biggest help!

How Our Son Cured the Incurable.10

We came close to losing our son Charles a few years back   His story is a testament to how the body can heal itself. I know people who have cured themselves of cancer, diabetes, heart disease and other conditions that are considered “incurable”.  My son Charles is one of those people.

Intensive Care & Bleeding In the Brain

One afternoon in 2004 we rushed Charles, who was 25 at the time,  to the hospital. He’d been feeling a bit sick and all of a sudden became incredibly dizzy and weak. They ran some tests and we learned he had a condition called Thrombocytopenia (ITP), which means he was not making enough platelets.  A healthy body has more than 150,000 platelets per micro liter of blood. Charles had 2000. The doctor said he had no idea how he was even standing.  ITP  causes you to bleed and bruise easily, among other things, and Charles case was so bad he was bleeding in his brain.  They immediately put him in intensive care.

As with many diseases there are a variety of possible causes for ITP. The treatments for it that help raise the platelet count are transfusions, steroids and the removal of spleen, none of which cures the condition. The best you can hope for is to raise the platelet count for a time.  Those were some rough days for all of us while he was in intensive care and it was touch and go for a while.  They immediately gave him high doses of steroids and we all anxiously waited to see if they would bring his platelets up. Within two days his platelets rose and eventually he left the hospital. The doctor had told Charles his options and was waiting to hear back from him as to whether he wanted to schedule getting his spleen removed.

At the time this happened I’d been studying health and natural holistic treatments for a couple of years. My focus was to learn what the body needed to stay disease free and how to heal it, rather than just treating the symptoms, which is pretty much all that western medicine does. When Charles got home I immediately sat down with him and shared what I had been learning. I told him that our bodies are incredible and can heal themselves of virtually anything if they are taken care of properly. I then encouraged him to do some studying on his own. He took that challenge to heart. He told the doctor he was opting to not have his spleen removed as he was going to try and heal himself naturally. He did of course continue to take the steroids so his platelet count remained out of the danger zone.

Charles formulated a plan that involved a dramatic change in his diet. In his research he learned that the body heals best when giving mainly a plant based diet, which is what it biologically needs. He also started exercising, as up to this point he’d led a fairly dormant life.  These two things alone are responsible for most of the disease and illness we see in our society. Changing them is the key to health and healing.

During this time Charles kept an online journal of his progress. I’ve included three of his entries below.  To this day he is the epitome of good health and has not had a single problem with ITP.

Tuesday, March 8th, 2005 2:26 pm Visions of Vegetables
After experiencing some more symptoms related to my ITP, I went in for another checkup some six days ago. My platelets were down pretty low again, about 5,000. Of course this is bad, so they started me up on another short 4-day stint of steroids to give them a little boost. And with a current count of 66,000 it seems to have done the trick.
When I found out my platelets were back down to 5,000 again, I decided to drastically change my diet. I have been reading further on ITP, and have found there are specific types of ITP related directly to alcohol and diuretics. So, the two main things I’ll be avoiding in my new diet are dairy (milk is a diuretic) and caffeine. The whole slew of food items with ingredients containing “enriched whatever” are out of the picture as well, such as enriched flour and enriched sugar. I’ve been reading various Bad Things about them. My main staple will be fruit and vegetables. I’ll be avoiding red meats, stuff that feels “heavy” to me. Meaning I eat it, and the next day it feels like it’s still with me (which it is!) Chicken or fish every once in a while if I get the urge to gnaw on something meaty.
I started this up the day I found out my platelets were so low, and so far I’ve been feeling tremendously well. It may simply be the steroids helping me out, but I’ve had them three times before and I don’t remember ever feeling this good. I’m getting plenty of sleep too, which probably has something to do with it. All I can say is I am hopeful that this new diet proves beneficial. I’m hopeful that my platelets will rise, but if they don’t, I think this vegetarian-ish stuff might stick regardless. If it can’t fix my platelet problem, it at least seems to make me feel pretty good! Which is an interesting turn of events, seeing as the consumption of vegetables in even minuscule amounts would have had me vomiting at the taste some few years ago. I can’t seem to get enough of the stuff now!

  Friday, March 18th, 2005 5:57 pm My Rockin’ Day of Super Awesomeness
I feel so awesome right now. So here’s the deal!So, all during this time and for the subsequent week up to now, I stick to my diet. No caffeine, no dairy. Those are the big ones. I’m finally getting more used to going places and telling them to leave out the cheese or whatever.

I cheat slightly with chocolate soy milk, chocolate having a little caffeine in it, maybe once a day when I do a “cayenne shot” with some of my coworkers. And sometimes I will have a little bit of the lighter meats, such as chicken, or maybe other darker meats if it’s very little (like I had some prosciutto on this one salad I had at a pizza-ish place). I eat organic oatmeal in the mornings with fruit, and supplement all my other meals with salads and as much leafy green-ness as possible.

Well, today, the Friday of awesomeness, rolls around! A day which is awesome for a number of reasons, which are related to all sorts of things: awesome kick-butting at work, awesome feeling of the goodness and taming of the cold, awesome coworker taking me to a hospital almost 30min away, awesome platelet count, and awesome procuring of a cab a full hour before it was expected due to lots of snow and stuff.

So the platelet count! Up from 5,000 it is now 37,000! Which doesn’t sound so spectacular seeing as a normal count is 150,000 or more. But! This is the first time it has EVER happened WITHOUT the use of a prescription or some other sort of treatment. After talking with my parents and listening to my gut feeling, I had decided not to fill the prescription for steroids all during the last two weeks. And of course I did not have the transfusion of WinRho again, or whatever it was they wanted to pump into me.

Anyway, there are a few herbal type medicines I am taking in addition to eating healthily. I don’t know if it’s directly related to one or the other or a combination of both, but my bet is on the diet. The more I keep with this diet the better I feel. I seriously have not felt this good in a long time, it’s just silly. And it makes total sense. You are what you eat. If you don’t have the raw materials of awesomeness, you cannot build the uber fortress of manly fortitude which will function properly and… awesomely! I was getting along with vegetables and hopeful they would help me out before, but now, let me tell you, we’re best buds. I’m takin’ this diet to the bank! No way no how am I going back to the crap I used to eat. I’ve found plenty of tasty healthy things and… it’s awesome! And also it rocks.

After just getting home from a bike ride and pacing around my apartment half-naked (you know, to cool off… what), I took a look in the mirror and for the first time I really noticed how much weight I’ve lost since not too long ago. And what’s this! Cheekbones! …The weight’s been dropping ever since a few months or so back when I started eating much healthier and exercising regularly.

My routine:

I’m always up around 7-8am and in bed no later than midnight, often by 10pm. I eat a large breakfast of whole grain cereal and soy milk or organic oatmeal with whole grain toast, as well as an apple, orange, or banana. For lunches I generally have an organic non-dairy burrito covered in salsa and baby spinach. For dinner I tend to only snack or bypass it altogether and seldom eat past the 6pm mark.

I make sure and chew my food well, which may sound obvious, but try eating an entire meal while forcing yourself to chew each bite 10 or more times before swallowing… it really irritated me at first. I was used to taking really huge bites and chewing maybe 5 times before gulping it down. But I’ve come to really enjoy my meals when I have them. …

I was snacking after lunch and dinner for a while, usually a small amount of soy ice cream or soy/tofu frozen treats or an organic oatmeal raisin cookie, but I’m getting to the point where I don’t feel compelled to always have it. My snacking is becoming more often the dried-fruit and nuts variety. It complements my sometimes dry, fruity, and nutty sense of humor.

I never exercise more than 20 or 30 minutes a day either, half of which is a brisk ride around Lake Calhoun on Ye Olde Mountaine Bikee. The rest of it’s comprised of quick (no more than a couple minutes) aerobic ab-twisty and face-stretchy exercises that I trained myself to do every time I go into the bathroom (don’t ask.) Just something to get the blood pumping throughout the day. Your body needs all the help it can get when your job involves so much time cooling your heels in front of a monitor. Anyway, it’s pretty awesome!

As far as personal accomplishments have gone the last few years, this by far is my most measurable and rewarding one. I am captain aboard the great and mighty H.M.S. Beefcake Muttonchops, sailing out upon the vast and untamed oceans of Goodness!

More and more high profile doctors are proclaiming the benefit of a plant based diet for preventing disease and for optimal health.  Dr. Joel Fuhrman has a phenomenal book called “Eat To Live” on how he has treated thousands of patients who have cured themselves of many conditions simply by changing how they ate.  This is about eating the way we are biologically meant to eat. When you eat that way, you thrive. When you don’t, you have disease and sickness. It’s as simple as that.

Another book well worth reading is by well known author John Robbins called “Healthy at 100“.  John was heir to Baskin Robbins and turned it down as it did not promote health.  John studied people around the world and found the groups that view aging as a blessing and who have people in their 90’s who are healthier than many 20 year-olds.  We are literally killing ourselves with our eating and lifestyle choices. Virtually all disease and conditions such as Alzheimer, cancer, heart disease, diabetes etc. are self inflicted.  And virtually all can be reversed as the body has an incredible ability to heal itself if just given what it needs. We can all live to a very old age in full health and with all our faculties.

I recently told a friend of mine that Roy and I have a goal to live to over 100 in full health. I then told her I wanted to die in my sleep holding hands with him… at the same time.  I probably should give Roy a heads up on that plan.

A smudging ceremony is a Native American ritual that has a spiritual and practical use.  Roy’s grandparents were Native American, and like the people themselves, Roy has a strong  love and respect for nature and the earth. Smudging fits right in. It is a type of blessing where you spread herbal smoke throughout an area to cleanse it. The idea is that it clears out negative energy. It also gets rid of old stale odors. When we move into a new home we always smudge it. Whether its psychological or not it always feels so much better afterwards and gives the house a nice earthy smell!  (We will also smudge the home about once a year after moving in.) It’s very simple to do. You take some white sage that’s bound together and light it, blow it out and then while thinking good thoughts walk clockwise around the perimeter of each room gently waving the smoking sage. You need to keep one window or door open in each room you’re smudging to allow the  smoke to dissipate and the “old energy” to leave. Herbs and matches are all that is required though there are extras items you can use to make it more ceremonial in nature.  I made my own little kit that holds all my smudging items. I have very fine clean white sand inside a large abalone shell which I then use to extinguish  the smudge stick when I’m done. (A smudge stick can be used over and over.) I keep it my supplies in a fancy pencil box that I labeled.

It’s also a wonderful way to teach children about other cultures. In the past I’ve had our granddaughter Alyssa Mae smudge our home for me. I’d start the herbs smoldering then give the bundle to her. She really enjoyed learning about the meaning behind it and then going from room to room following the directions I gave her.

drop-159527_640There is a huge and valid controversy concerning fluoride.  Fluoride that is put in our drinking water is basically the tailings (toxic waste product) from aluminum manufacturing factories.  This is because they needed a way to dispose of it. Huge red flag there. Too much of it damages teeth. A small amount can protect them.  I the book Dr. Phillips explains the history behind it and the dangers. She does however advocate using it in one of the products she suggests because of its proven benefits to teeth but does not promote adding it in our drinking water and removes it from her own water. The System

This is the basic system outlined by Dr. Phillips. If I neglect doing it for a few weeks my teeth still start having issues and become sensitive. Once I start up again the sensitivity is gone in a matter of 2 or 3 days. This dentist outlines two plans, one  for children and one for adults. Below is the adult version. Again, you can purchase her book for more of the specifics.

 

  • The key is to use the EXACT items listed. i.e. Get only Crest Regular toothpaste and not Crest with whitening or other things added. She does give alternatives in her book but I will list the basic items.

  • CloSYS a pH balanced chlorine dioxide rinse. This removes specific types of harmful bacteria but is gentle on the mouth.
  • New or clean soft toothbrush with no longer than a 1″ head. (important to keep this disinfected between use by swishing for 30 seconds in Listerine. Keep away from other toothbrushes and allow to dry.
  • Crest Regular Cavity Protection toothpaste. (This has as few additives as possible. Its cleansing without being abrasive.
  • Listerine (With no extras). For plaque control. Using twice a day is as effective as flossing.
  • ACT anti-cavity rinse. This is a protective rinse with ACT anti-cavity rinse with 0.05% sodium fluoride. (The book details options and what to do if your water is already fluoridated)
  • Xylitol Products 3 to 5 times throughout the day.  Xylitol mints or gum after any drink or snack is super easy. Using granular Xylitol as a replacement for sugar benefits the body overall.

 

HOW TO USE THEM

  1. Rinse mouth for 30 seconds with CloSYS.
  2. Brush teeth with small amount of Crest Regular toothpaste, focusing on where the gums meet the teeth area with circular motions.
  3. Rinse with Listerine Regular for 30 seconds. This is basically a liquid floss and reaches more areas than floss does.
  4. Rinse with ACT Anti cavity rinse  as protection for 30 seconds.
  5. Rinse your toothbrush in a small amount of Listerine for 30 seconds. Place away from other toothbrushes, standing upward to dry between use.

That’s it! Simple and gloriously effective. All of these products can be purchased in regular stores, though you may have to find a health store for the Xylitol products. I’ve also linked the ones I buy on Amazon below. blank300x231

Stop Bleeding and Heart Attacks Instantly With Cayenne

“It will stop bleeding instantly and it will stop a heart attack or stroke instantly.”

Cayenne is one of those dramatic herbs. It can save a life instantly in an emergency. Like most herbs it also  treats a variety of things from wounds to ulcers and is incredibly beneficial as a preventive to take regularly.  I carry Cayenne Tincture in my purse at ALL times for two reasons. 1. It will stop bleeding instantly and 2. It will stop a heart attack or stroke instantly.  I’ve not had the opportunity to use it personally for the latter but I’ve used it several times for bleeding, cayenne3including a recent deep cut and I was able to catch it on video.  I was home alone at the time so I was trying to handle the camera while dealing with a wound at the same time. Though  not the best quality of video it clearly shows how great it works to stop bleeding.

Roy and I are firm believers in natural and herbal treatments. I’ve studied them for years now. They cause no harmful side effects and truly heal disease rather than just mask symptoms. They’ve saved our lives more than once.  You can also use 1 tsp powdered cayenne in a cup of hot water drunk quickly to stop a heart attack or bleeding. The tincture is just easier to use and less hot.

NOTE: For heart attacks and bleeding ONLY USE LIQUID FORM as a tea or tincture.  NEVER use capsules for that. Cayenne starts its work in the mouth. This is very important. Like I said I carry the tincture with me wherever I go.

  Here is the video I took when I cut my finger recently. I was doing a craft with an X-acto knife and my hand slipped and the point of the knife when straight into my thumb. It was not a wide cut but it went deep. I’m pretty sure it hit bone. I grabbed a paper towel and then my video camera. I was home alone at the time so  I had to keep laying the camera down to treat the wound.  I’ve clipped and edited the 5 minute so it just shows the initial wound and then the cayenne stopping the bleeding.   If you’ve ever had a cut on your hand you are likely aware that these bleed forever. It will bleed through a bandage every few minutes for an hour or more. Hand wounds, like head wounds, are  like that. With the cayenne it stopped bleeding in 90 seconds and it never started again. blank

  Dr. Christopher was a Master Herbalist and Naturopathic Doctor. I’ve used his information on herbs for years. He was well known in the United States and even abroad for his teachings and knowledge and incredible influence as one of the largest promoters of natural healing.  This is what he states about cayenne:             1. HEART ATTACKS: In 35 years of practice, and working with the people and teaching, I have never on house calls lost one heart attack patient and the reason is, whenever I go in–if they are still breathing–I pour down them a cup of cayenne tea (a teaspoon of cayenne in a cup of hot water, and within minutes they are up and around). This is one of the fastest acting aids we could ever give for the heart, because it feeds that heart immediately. Most hearts are suffering from malnutrition because of processed food we are eating, but here it gets a good powerful dose of real food and it’s something that has brought people in time after time. This is something that everyone should know how great it is, because a heart attack can come to your friends or loved ones any time. And even yourself. The warm tea is faster working than tablets, capsules, cold tea, because the warm tea opens up the cell structure–makes it expand and accept the cayenne that much faster, and it goes directly to the heart, through the artery system, and feeds it in powerful food. STOP BLEEDING: A wound, external or internal, will stop bleeding if the individual will drink a cup of water (preferably hot) with a teaspoon of cayenne pepper (red pepper) stirred into it. The bleeding will stop generally by the time a person can count up to ten after drinking the cayenne tea. The cayenne equalizes the blood pressure from the top of the head to the feet. The 90 HU Cayenne  is a VERY VERY HOT medicinal type. This is what I use but be careful with it.  You can use regular cayenne from your cupboard in a cup of hot water. If you use the higher heat version you may want to test a little ahead of time to see how you tolerate it.  You can also buy cayenne extract.

Make Your Own Cold Packs!

Make your own cold packs to use for sprained muscles or just to help you cool off! They are fun and easy and we’ve got FREE PRINTABLE instructions along with the directions on how to make a nice cover for them!blank630x20

These beautiful and pliable cold packs are amazing. They are so easy and cheap to make you’ll almost look forward to your next sprained muscle so you can use one! (Just kidding.)  You can also use them to help keep food cold in a lunch bag or just to help you cool off on a hot day.  They require two basic ingredients: water and rubbing alcohol in a Ziploc bag. Takes 5 minutes.  (Then at least 4 hours of freezer time.) cold.packs-small1If you want to make them uber cool add in some food coloring and  Water Crystals. They make it even more pliable and look wonderful. They make them last much longer too.

You always want to wrap these in something even if its a washcloth so that the cold pack doesn’t go directly on your skin. I also show how to make a quick pouch to put them in. Sewing a pouch takes about 10 minutes. I’ll give you detailed instructions. Remember, you can make these with just water and alcohol in a pinch and they work great!

Supplies for Cold Packs

  • Water (Plain water works but distilled water is the purest and will not discolor over time.)
  • Rubbing Alcohol (Keeps it from freezing solid.)
  • Ziploc Type Bags. Freezer type will of course last the longest.
  • Food Coloring OPTIONAL
  • Water Crystals OPTIONAL
  • Iron and foil for sealing bag closed. OPTIONAL
  • Material for Pouch OPTIONAL

NOTE: I actually used some unique storage baggies I had that were not for food as I loved the size. They were 6″ x 9″. You can buy these in a variety of sizes on Amazon  adjusting the liquid as needed.  Small ones would be great for kids. I posted a link to the baggies I personally used for this tutorial at the bottom plus a smaller size baggie (4 x 6).

About Water Crystals

Water Crystals can be found in the gardening section of most stores like Lowe’s or Home Depot. Miracle Gro is one brand. Walmart can also carry them during planting season. They are used to retain moisture in the soil as they can absorb many times their weight. The crystals technical name is polycrystalline and is used in other things like diapers and feminine pads. That’s how those diapers can hold SO much liquid!

I live in a small town so I had trouble finding them and just ordered mine on Amazon for $8.00. A 12oz bag goes a LONG way as you only need about 3 tsps of the crystals per bag.  Make sure you buy JUST the crystals alone. You don’t want fertilizer mixed with them as happens sometimes.  That would be gross.

Cold Packs Recipe

The ratio is two parts water to 1 part alcohol. For my size of baggie I used 1 Cup Water and 1/2 Cup Rubbing Alcohol.   For every 1 cup of liquid use about 3 tsps of Water Crystals. (optional). Add as much food coloring as you like, again optional. Below is printable version of the recipe.

1 Quart Heavy Baggie, Zipper Type.
(Preferably freezer bags because they are heavier.  (Any size works just adjust liquid as needed.)
1 Cup Water (preferably distilled)
1/2 Cup Rubbing Alcohol
3 tsp Water Crystals (optional)
Food coloring as desired (optional)

DIY Cold Packs : Pretty & Easy!

Ingredients
  • 1 Quart Ziploc Baggies, preferably freezer. I used heavy non food storage baggies for mine.
  • 1 Cup Water (preferably distilled)
  • ½ Cup Rubbing Alcohol
  • 3 tsp Water Crystals (optional)
  • Food coloring as desired (optional)
Instructions
  1. Pour the water into your baggie.
  2. Add the rubbing alcohol which keeps it from freezing solid.
  3. Add in food coloring until desired color. OPTIONAL
  4. Add in 3 tsp of water crystals. Squeeze bag a little to mix them. OPTIONAL
  5. Let sit for 15 minutes while the crystals absorb the liquid. OPTIONAL
  6. Place in freezer standing upward for at least 4 hours.
  7. Remove from freezer.
  8. Squeeze out the extra air as much as possible keeping the contents away from the zipper part. Seal the zip lock.
OPTIONAL SEAL WITH AN IRON
  1. Because you stood the bag on end when freezing that keeps the contents away from the open end of the bag for easier sealing/melting.
  2. Take a piece of foil to cover the end of your baggie above the part that zips shut.
  3. Use an iron on medium heat and run it over the foil to seal the baggie shut. (Practicing on an empty baggie first will help you adjust the time.)
  4. You can now squeeze the contents evenly throughout the bag.
MAKING A POUCH
  1. Always wrap your cold pack in a dishtowel or washcloth before placing on skin. You can also set a quick pouch cutting material about ¾ an inch wider than your pack and sewing the sides and hemming the top.

Visual Steps

These take about as long to make as it takes to pour liquid in a baggie but there are a few small hints that will help. I’ll clearly state the optional steps.

Pour your water and rubbing alcohol in your baggie. Add food coloring if desired.

If you choose to add the Water Crystals which are optional add them now. These make it extra pliable. 3 tsp per 1 cup water.

This is what it looks like immediately after adding everything including the crystals.  Let this sit for 15 minutes while the crystals absorb the liquid. You can squeeze it a bit now and then to mix.

This is what it looks like after 15 minutes. 3 tsp of crystals does a lot! Place your bag in the freezer standing upward for at least 4 hours or overnight. I keep it standing up so that mixture stays away from the zipper end. This allows me to easily seal it with an iron. That part is however optional.

This is how the cold packs look after being in the freezer overnight. You can squeeze it as its still very pliable but if you’re sealing it with an iron don’t squeeze it much yet. At this point I lay the bag on the table and press out all the extra air that I can and zip lock the zipper part. I make sure to keep the contents away from the end because I also like to do the next step of added sealing.

This step is optional but I wanted an extra seal on mine in case I squeezed it too hard and end popped open. If you’re careful its not really necessary. Take a piece of foil and cover the end ABOVE the zipper part. Run an iron on medium heat over the end until it melts together a little. You may want to test this on an empty bag to get a feel for how long it takes.

You can now squeeze the contents evenly throughout the bag. If you did not choose to seal it with an iron you can do it right after taking it out of the freezer.

You do not need Water Crystals. They do make it a nicer, more even consistency and it lasts much longer, but its still very pliable without. Just a more slushy feel.

 Sewing A Quick Pouch

You always want to wrap your cold pack in a cloth, dishtowel or washcloth before applying to the skin. You can also make a pouch in about 10 minutes.

 

Get a piece of fabric folded over that is larger than your cold pack.

 Lay your baggie on top of it and cut it about 1/2 to 3/4 an inch wider also leaving that much on the top.

 Hem the top of your pouch.

 With the fabric inside out sew the sides of your pouch.

Hot flashes suck. I tried to explain them to Roy but it’s difficult. They are much more than just feeling warm all over. Severe ones make you literally not want to even be touched. You can become instantly drenched and clammy all over. It’s a horrible feeling along with incredible discomfort. If you’re a mid-life gal there’s a 70% chance you’ve experienced or will experience these. I was hoping to be in the 30% who didn’t, but alas twas not to be. I have found a way to alleviate them for the most part and wanted to share what works for me.

Products That Can Work Wonders!

(There are a variety of brands and I’ve used several with success.)  That lasted for almost a year. Then they got a little worse and I added an additional supplement into the mix. (A high end Black Cohosh one.) This reduced them 95% and the ones I had 710SDHdzp2L._SL1478_were very low in intensity. I was cool with that. (No pun intended).  One or both of these help many and they never need anything else.

Humidity Did Me In

I currently live in the south where the humidity is through the roof. Once that humidity kicked in my hot flashes came back with a vengeance. And they were exponentially worse. I’m talking all day all night long soaked in sweat feeling like your going crazy worse. I added even more supplements and increased what I had been taking. It didn’t touch them. I started to get a little panicky. This was life altering nastiness.

I use natural and herbal supplements when I need to heal anything and avoid pharmaceutical like the plague as I’ve yet to see any that don’t have a whole list of side effects worse than what they propose to help. But I was desperate. My doctor gave me some standard hormone pills for the situation. I came home, pulled out the sheet that goes with the drugs and read it. The first thing it said was that they could give me cancer. Then it went on to other horrible diseases and side effects I could get if I took them. Aside from being highly disturbed that I go to a doctor for help and I get given stuff that can kill me, I decided come hell or high water I’d find another way. I’d worked for years to be careful what I put into my body to keep it healthy. I wasn’t about to put this toxic stuff into it if I could avoid it.

blankThe Answer to My Final Hot Flash Problem: A Dehumidifier!

This event inspired me to hunker down and do more research. One thing that came up was home dehumidifiers. Humidly was the problem at this point so I decided to check into them. I honestly expected that to be a futile, thinking they would not only be off the charts expensive but also have to be built into the home itself to work. We are in a rental home so that was not an option. Ends up I was wrong. A quick search on Amazon pulled up several, one of which had great reviews. I was unsure how they worked though and the area they would cover. It was a Frigidaire unit and according to some of the reviews I read it would help the humidity in the whole house. I doubted how much humidity this small until would actually remove. It was only $229 which didn’t seem like much to do what I needed done but being desperate I purchased it. Amazon no longer carries the Frigidaire model I bought but they have quite a few others here.

It was delivered two days later with my Amazon Prime. Roy opened it up and basically plugged it in and turned it on. Within two hours I felt a difference in the house and my hot flashes went way down. It was literally that quick. I was blown away. That night I had my first comfortable sleep in weeks. I’m still taking my supplements as I’m pretty sure I’d have the full blown hot flashes without them but I’m having them removed about 85% and the ones I have are fairly minor.

I would have rather found a supplement that helped during the summer. After all if I go outside I’m going to get them again but I don’t do much running around so this works for now and it’s saved my sanity and my health. This unit requires being emptied once or twice a day or you can hook up a hose and have it run into a sink without the emptying part. We’re doing ours manually and we have to empty it once about ever 8 hours. It’s less often depending on the level of humidity. (It shuts off the fan when it needs emptied.) It appears to hold about 3 gallons. So three gallons of water was pulled out of our air in 8 hours. Wow.

Below are the photos of my dehumidifier and the supplement I use and also the yam cream. If you suffer from hot flashes I would start with the yam cream. If after a few days you notice no difference add in the supplement. I use a high end Black Cohosh supplement with a few other things in it. It’s worked by far the best from different ones I’ve tried. But like I said, I got rid of mine initially with just the yam cream.

 

Fans Fans Fans

I’m a huge fan of fans. (pun intended). I just love wind, always have. I own all sizes from 4″ ones to over 27″ square floor models. I have a fan at my desk and one by my bed and sleep with it year round. In summer the large ones come out and are in every room as they help with the heat and humidity. I also have a battery operated one in case the power goes out. Best to be prepared I always say. I ran through the house and took a few snapshots of some of my fans.
