Painting the jars. What we did and suggest NOT doing. For the jars shown we placed some Mod Podge into a bowl and added a squirt or two of white paint. We then brushed it onto the sides of the inside of the jar. The result was not nearly as nice as we wanted. Though it looks great lit up in the dark, in the light it looks messy. So we tested another method that we suggest using instead.

Woodland Mason Jar Light

A better method to paint your jars.
Because we were unhappy with our original jar painting, we did some testing. Then we created a post on how to paint mason jars which you can check out before moving on to the rest of your project.

A whiteboard calendar can be a wonderful asset for a business or family scheduling. Learn how to make your own with time zone clocks above it!blank630x20

A whiteboard calendar can be a wonderful asset for a business or family scheduling. I had purchased a wipe off calendar but it looked pretty plain hanging on my office wall so Roy grabbed some wood strips and made me a quick rough frame that I nailed on around the calendar. Then I added four inexpensive plastic wall clocks from Walmart and set one to each time zone. You could also create an extended family time zone wall as we did in the past and set each clocks time to where each family member lives.

We’ve got free printables you can use to make your own plaques and also Silhouette versions if you happen to own that machine. We also have a free mini time zone chart to keep handy.  I keep mine near my desk along with my Daylight Saving Time Reminder that you can print.blank630x20

NOTE:  You can purchase a variety of styles of calendars. They come by year or month and some allow you to write in your own numbers. Some use dry erase markers and some use wet erase. For my needs I chose a  full year wall calendar. It is wet erase. I link to it below.

  • Wall Calendar (I purchased this exact one for 2016.  It’s a wet erase type of board and I purchased these markers to use with it.
  • Plastic wall clocks  I purchased mine at Walmart for $4 each.
  • Wood Strips for frame and time zone plaques.  We used 1.5″ pieces cut to fit the calendar. 8″ pieces were cut for the time zone plaques.
  • Tiny nails to hold frame on the wall.
  • Command Strips tape if desired to hold the time zone plaques on.
  • Time zone labels, free download below

We'll show you how to etch glass and create beautiful designs on almost any type of glass in just a few minutes. You'll be surprised how easy it is!blank630x20

I’d always wanted to learn how to etch glass but assumed it was difficult, taking all kinds of funky chemicals and a lot of time. Silly me.  5 minutes. That’s how long it took me. After my first one I proceeded to search the house looking for things I could etch designs onto. It’s a bit addicting.

silhouette.pattern.includedIt does require etching cream and sticky type stencils. A small bottle of the etching cream lasts a long time.  If you have a cutting machine, such as Silhouette, you can make your own stencils, which is what I did.   (Hint: Grab your etching cream at Michael’s or Hobby Lobby using a 40% coupon.)  FYI You can grab the free sketching images below. There is a pdf version and a Silhouette cutter version.

One fun use for etching is to decorate up your own personal glass water bottles. You can also learn Why Glass Water Bottles are Better!

Portable DIY Lego Table

Love Lego? Make this easy portable DIY Lego table from an old TV stand. You can even have it match your decor. A Lego mat, paint, glue and stickers. Voila! blank630x20Kids and adults alike love Lego and our family is no different. I wanted a portable DIY Lego table for my newly updated living room and I wanted it to match. I went through my garage and found an old wooden TV tray. It was perfect! I painted it to match my living room and even added some gold stickers and leg tips. It’s chic and fun!

DIY Lego Table Supplies

  • Wood TV tray (you can find these at thrift stores)
  • Paints of choice. We used white acrylic indoor paint and Rust-Oleum Gold spray paint
  • Lego mat  (We used a 15″x15″.)
  • Fine tooth saw or utility knife (We had a saw and used that but I’ve seen people cut the mats with a heavy duty utility knife.)
  • Sand paper (optional)
  • Glue
  • Stencils or labels (optional)

This was the old TV stand I started with.

It took about four coats of paint. I hand painted mine but spray painting would work great also and be much quicker.Love Lego? Make this easy portable DIY Lego table from an old TV stand. You can even have it match your decor. A Lego mat, paint, glue and stencils. Voila!blank630x20

Because my tray had rounded edges I wanted my Lego mat to match so we traced the corners.

My TV tray measured 19″ x 15 1/4″. The Lego mat was 15″ square so we had to cut one row off of one side for a nice fit. Then we cut the rounded edges.  I’ve seen people cut these mats with a strong utility knife also. Just be very careful if you choose to do it that way.  After we sawed the corners I took a light sandpaper to them to smooth them out.Love Lego? I could have ordered two mats to cover the entire top of my tray but I liked the idea of having text on one side. I chose the word “create”. As I had a Silhouette cutting machine, I cut my letters out of vinyl and then spray painted them metallic gold before applying. You could also print out the letters, cut them out and then Mod Podge them onto your tray. Love Lego? Make this easy portable DIY Lego table from an old TV stand. Get your family organized with a Star Wars Family Command Center! We made ours from an old magnetic dry erase board we had lying around. (We put chalkboard contact paper on half of it.) There’s a variety of ways you can create yours and we’ve got a printable quote plus printable Star Wars planets you can make magnets from.

We’ll also show you how to quickly turn a plastic chalk holder into a lightsaber! Add a small family photo for each person, a catch all box and some hooks and you’ve got a spot everyone can keep track of what’s going on in the family. (P.S. For those who have a Silhouette cutting machine we have those files for download in addition to the pdfs.)

Amazing Clothes Hamper Redo

This Clothes Hamper Redo shows that there's not much you can't make look new again if you try. Paint alone can work wonders! Saved me $100 for a new set. blank630x20

My Old Hampers (I actually have 4 though only 3 are shown)

My Old Hampers (I actually have 4)

This Clothes Hamper Redo shows that there’s not much you can’t make look new again if you try! I’ve had this set of clothes hampers for about 8 years and I love them. I got them on Amazon and paid about $18 each back then. At this point in time they were still very functional but a bit  wore out so when I did my Budget Bedroom Makeover. I knew I’d need to replace them with something nicer that matched.clothes hamper on amazon

I headed to Amazon again but the only type I could find that were this size and black were these.  At $27 bucks a pop (and I needed four of them) it seemed like a poor choice for a “budget” makeover. That’s when I began to wonder if I could give the ones I have a face lift.  I got with Roy and he said he could put a small wood brace on the inside to make them sturdier. After he did that I decided to test one and see if it would hold paint well and it did! Below are the simple steps I used for my clothes hamper redo.  Grab our free files below if you’d like to use the same lettering. We have it as a PDF and in Silhouette version!

I tend to label my containers in some way, as you can see from my photo from 2008. For these I decided to use my Silhouette cutter. I wanted the labels silver and I didn’t have silver paper. So I took a sheet of white cardstock and lightly spray painted it silver. Then I cut out my text using my machine and used spray glue to attach it.

Quote Sign

I love quotes and I had saved this one  knowing I wanted to use it in my bedroom when I got around to redoing it as it fits Roy and I perfectly. Our life has indeed been an adventure! We made our sign using wood slats that Roy cut and glued together. However, a solid piece of raw wood would look nice too. Cut it to whatever size you wish, lightly sand it if desired, stain it and place an applicable quote on it. You can find ready to stick quotes that you can purchase at craft stores and other places.

blank630x20Foam Board & Glue Wall Hanging

I created one of these and made Roy and my initials with the provable plus sign meaning love. It turned out OK but was not the quality I really wanted for the bedroom. It would be great for a kids room or a more casual setting. I decided to use the same method and make a wall hanging which fit the room better.

Trace letters onto foam board and cut out with an X-acto type knife. You can lightly sand the edges with sandpaper to help smooth them out. Trace on designs. As I’m no artist I drew some very basic teardrop shapes all over it. Using glue carefully trace the designs. Allow to dry overnight. Spray paint with metallic paint. GLUE: I used regular white glue for the letters. It flattened out a bit more than I liked. Tacky glue works much better.

I had an old frame that I used to cut my foam board to fit. I spray painted it black to match the room. On my foam board I made very simple designs then I used Tacky Glue, which held its shape much better, to outline them. After it dried I spray painted the board with metallic paint and placed it in the frame. Do you need some cheap bedroom wall ideas? Here are a few things to get your creative juices flowing! The instructions for making cone wreaths are all over the web. I’ll just show you the basics here. I needed a large focal point above my bed and always loved the look of these so I created one. For the center I used a round mirror which I purchased at the dollar store. The video shows the very basics of how to roll the cones.

Bird Art

I had one wall left that needed something on it. As I was looking for ideas I saw a lot of birds on a wire artwork. I especially liked the “love birds” art which was very applicable to the room. I wanted a wide piece of art to fit the space but we didn’t have wood that was wide enough. Rather than purchase some Roy made three smaller plaques and painted on those. He did a light white wash coat on the boards and then roughed up the paint in spots with sandpaper. He lightly sketched on a branch and then the birds. As the design is so simple anyone could make this. Then he painted them solid black but dabbed on some dark green leaves. Then of course he signed up.

Supplies for Lord of the Rings Art Wood Rack

  • 1″x6″ piece of wood. *cut to 18″ long)
  • One 1/4″ round dowel cut into seven 2″ sections.
  • Wood glue
  • 7 wood plug buttons approx. 3/8″ (optional)
  • Saw to cut wood (a hand saw works great!)
  • Sawtooth no-nail hangers (optional)
  • Sandpaper
  • X-acto knife (or Silhouette machine)
  • Paper or cardstock for the part members. (You can use black and trace the pattern onto it or white and print the pdf as is onto it and then cut it out.)

  • Paint
  • Mod Podge or other clear gloss.

Instructions

Notes: You can use different sizes of wood and dowels if desired, adjusting things as needed. You can also purchase your own hooks to insert it rather than use dowels.

You can either cut a larger piece of wood down or buy a typical 1×6 board and cut it to the length you need, which is what we did. The wood plugs are optional but they are inexpensive and really make it look extra nice.

Print out your background pattern. Cut it out and tape it together then trace it onto your wood however you like.  You can even just press hard with a pencil and it leaves a light indent on the wood that you can use as your painting guide. No Nail Sawtooth Hangers

I added these after the hanger was completed. These are my favorite type of hangers. They just hammer right into the wood.

DIY Lord of the Rings Art Rack Hangersblank630x20

There are three ways you can cut out the Lord of the Rings art and us it. 1. You can print it out onto white paper or cardstock on high quality. Then you have to take an X-acto knife and carefully cut around it. (Yes, this will take a while and some patience.)  Carefully tape it together. 2. You can print it out on normal paper then lay it over black paper or cardstock and carefully cut it out using the top piece as a pattern.  Again, tape it together carefully. 3. For those of you who own a Silhouette cutting machine you can use the files for that and the machine does all the work for you.  Make this Lord of the Rings art wood rack to hold belts, jewelry etc. Easy to follow instructions with free pattern download. Use your paints of choice and paint the areas as shown. No artistic skill required!

Glue your party graphic onto the wood using Mod Podge or another method, making sure to align it carefully.

Top it with your choice of gloss or semi gloss coating. Make this Lord of the Rings art wood rack to hold belts, jewelry etc. Easy to follow instructions with free pattern download. Takes a simple saw and drill!blank630x20

You will now drill the holes to place your 2″ peg hooks into. We used a 1/4″ drill bit. You want your pegs to fit into the hole snug. We choose 7 hooks and drilled the holes as follows: 1/2″ up from the bottom of the board. We started 1 1/2″ in from each end. Each hole was 2 1/2″ apart. Please measure your own board to make sure this spacing works for you.

Getting Peg Hooks Ready

You can do this two ways. After cutting your dowels 2″ long you can glue your wood button ends onto them before inserting them. We did this by taping them upright to a board and then gluing the buttons on and letting them dry. We then inserted them into the board and painted them. In retrospect we suggest you insert the wood dowels into the board and then glue on the wood buttons and let them dry and then paint them as its simpler.

Instructions

Print out your patterns and cut them carefully. Glue the emojis on to CDs.  Paint your tongue depressors if desired and glue them onto your CD putting them at least 1/3rd the way into the CD so they are sturdy. You can cut two of each image and glue one to the back of your fan too so it’s two sided. Only use one CD however as using two will make it too heavy.

Birds on a Wire Note Set

This upcycle project would make a great useful gift! Its a little birds on a wire note holder set made from clothespins and a can. Add in some string and paper and they can make a hanging note center! Comes with FREE PRINTABLES! blank630x20

This little note can gift set uses an empty soup can. I used a smooth edge can  opener to remove the lid so there are no sharp edges.   The clothespins are dyed yellow with Rit Dye and the birds and label are provided as a free download.  Then toss in a pen and some note paper. I added a string to attach on the wall for hanging notes or photos. You could also attach sticky magnet sheets on the back of your clothespins or glue a regular magnet for using the clothespins on the fridge.   I cut my birds out using my Silhouette Cutter but they are easily done by hand using scissors. I’ve included both types below as a free download.

Birds on a Wire Note Set Supplies

  • 1 soup can
  • aprox 6 clothespins dyed
  • Scrapbook paper to cover can
  • Downloaded, printed and cut birds and label.
  • Glue
  • Notepad and pen or pencil
  • String if desired
  • Magnets for back of clothespins if desired.

Your lamps can hold a surprise message when turned on! All it takes is our FREE PATTERNS, some cardstock and an X-ACTO knife. (We also have a Silhouette cutter download!) We have a variety of messages all ready for you to print and cut out. What a unique way to “brighten” your home! blank630x20

Your lamps can hold surprise messages when they’re turned on! It’s just a matter of tacking a paper message behind your shade. This can be done using an X-acto knife, dark paper and a little patience, or if you’re lucky enough to have a Silhouette cutting machine, you can use that. I have FREE downloads for BOTH versions.

NOTE: This generally only works well on thin shades as thicker one’s will not allow the message to shine through. Make sure your lamp has a wide berth between the bulb and the shade so there’s no fire hazard.

World Globe Makeover

World Globe Makeover.8

blank300x231

I love globes and I’ve seen some of the awesome makeovers people have done with old ones. So I hit eBay looking for one I could purchase and re-do. Ends up even used ones in poor shape were pretty pricey. But I kept checking and eventually found one that I was able to snag fairly reasonably. My plan was to do a full makeover,  painting over the globe and adding letters. However, when I received it I realized the globe itself, though old, was in really good shape. I couldn’t bring myself to paint over it. So my major makeover turned into a minor one. But I’m very happy with the result and changes I made while maintaining the integrity of the actual globe itself.

If you’re a skilled painter (I’m not) you could paint on the words. You could also print and cut them out of regular paper and glue them on. I used my Silhouette Portrait to print the letters on self-sticking vinyl.  I LOVE that little machine! I’ve included the Silhouette file I used for those who own that machine plus a plain text version of my letters for those who want to cut out the letters by hand.

blank11

Supplies Needed

  • An old globe. 12″ is the standard size. (Diameter of the ball.)
  • Letters cut out of vinyl or paper. These need to be fairly thin so they will lay on the curved surface and not buckle.
  • Mod Podge (I didn’t use this but it would be a good finish over an old globe.
  • Spray Paint
  • Sand paper if needed for rust.
  • Stick glue or spray adhesive for letters you cut out.

  blank11Download

You can of course use any word you wish on your globe. However, if you’d like to use the same one that I did you can download the text for the word “Explore” below as a pdf that you can cut out. For those who might have a Silhouette machine there is also a file for that!  My text fits a 12″ globe.

blank11

“Explore” Text (pdf)

explore.thumb

blank11

“Explore” Silhouette Format (zip file)
exploresilhouette..thumb

Instructions

The first thing I did was to take apart the globe. The top disc had the north, south, east and west direction markers listed on it but it was too rusted to restore so I painted over it.  Though the globe was a bit yellowed it was in wonderful shape with no tears on the surface. This is why I decided to clean it up and keep it as is.

globe.makeover-4

blank11

The metal base was rusted in places. I sanded some of the rougher spots with a sanding sponge then cleaned it up. There was also a dent in the base which I hammered out. It wasn’t perfect but because of the location it wouldn’t  show anyway.  I then painted all the metal parts. I suggest using Rust-Oleum or something similar. l chose a color that was pulled from some of the contents on the map.

globe.makeover-5

blank11

I wiped off the globe with a damp paper towel. I thought about coating it first in Mod Podge to help protect it but with it being yellowed I wanted the option to try and figure out how to brighten it up later. Because I was using removable vinyl I could do this.  I cut out my word  of choice “Explore” on my silhouette printer on some vinyl that matched my color choice. If you’ve cut out your letters by hand you would glue them on at this point. Stick glue or spray adhesive would work great for this.

blank11Cutting

For Manual Cutting: The pixel heart necklace pdf has several of each size heart but you only need to cut out ONE of the size of your choice to use for a pattern. Trace the one you cut out onto the cardstock several times and cut carefully with the knife, including cutting out the hole.  I used 5 hearts for mine and it was a great thickness. You can add more or less if desired.

Silhouette Cutter: If you own a Silhouette download the appropriate file and remove the sizes you do not want in your Silhouette software and cut out the rest.

blank11

To Assemble

Spread a thin layer of glue between each heart until it is as thick as desired.  Let it dry.   Coat with Mod Podge if desired for a sheen finish.  Insert string or chain.

This fun kids garden kit with free printables is made using simple supplies, including fake flowers and large “seeds” that are easy to find. Instant garden!

blank630x20

silhouette.pattern.includedKids love playing in the dirt. (As do some adults!) In fact there’s a good bit of science that states dirt is good for us.  Here is a pretend kids garden set you can put together for next to nothing. I made one for our daughter little girl Alyssa Mae (seen on the photos). There’s a downloadable pdf with the full instructions below including plant labels plus a Silhouette file.  For more ideas kids can also do check out our Unique Planters from Soda Bottles.

Suggested Supplies for Kids Garden Kit

  • Small squirt bottle. You can find the small ones in the hair care section of stores. It needs to be the smaller size for children to easily use.
  • A few almond in shells for pretend seeds. Good for tiny fingers and easy to dig back up and reuse.
  • Heavy Ziploc bag or any container to hold seeds . Use the printable label to stick on whatever holds your seeds.
  • Large metal spoon for digging. You can of course get child sized spades etc. if desired.
  • Artificial flowers.   Get the type that have longer sturdy stems so they stick in the ground easily and stand up. A bouquet type will work if they have longer stems. You just have to cut the flowers off at the base with a wire cutter.
  • Plastic bugs. Dollar stores usually have these. Fun addition!
  • Small flower pots.  You can use small plastic posts or the small Jiffy Pots shown.
  • Tongue depressors, Popsicle sticks or regular small sticks for gluing flower signs on. I even used wood clothes pins to clip onto the pots.
  • Printed labels from this kit for flower stakes and seed bag.   Print the flower tags on white cardstock if possible.
  • Hot glue, spray glue or some way to affix labels to sticks and plastic bag. Hot glue works best for affixing the flower names to the sticks.
  • Box to use as a tote.  You can also find cheap plastic totes at the stores.  You want something a child can easily carry.
  • Empty TP rolls and or cups to glue inside to hold items.
  • Dirt  They need a spot with some soft clean dirt they can dig in. You can also buy small bags of potting soil.

 The Tote

For the kids garden tote we took a cardboard box and cut it up.

blank630x20

I wanted a way to keep it organized so the pieces were not tossed in. I found some empty toilet paper rolls and a cup. I glued the empty rolls to the sides and put a little glue on the bottom of the cup to hold it in place. These hold flowers, labels on sticks, digging spoon and plastic bugs.

blank630x20Flower Stakes

The flower labels were printed on cardstock and cut out. After you cut them out you need some type of stick to attach them to so they can put those in the ground. Popsicle sticks, tongue depressors or ever regular straight small sticks will work.
