These festive little wooden reindeer are a mix of modern and rustic style and only require some tiny branches off your tree. Add twine and a bell and they're complete! These festive little wooden reindeer are a mixture of modern and rustic style and only require some tiny branches off your tree. Add twine and a bell and they’re complete! The best part is you can make them any size. And I mean any size. We made small 5″ ones but you could even make them from logs if you were so inclined!  If you enjoy doing this, you might also like our unique little stand up Christmas Countdown from Wood Slices.

NOTES ON GLUE: For the tiny reindeer, I used hot glue in the essence of time. This is actually not a good idea if your branches have bark on them as mine did because the sticks will pull the bark off easily. Either use sticks without bark or use larger branches and drill holes to place your sticks into for a firm hold. For larger reindeer I’d suggest a drill and wood glue.

This beautiful illuminated upcycled decor light was made from the covers on an old ceiling fan. Learn to look past what something is to what it can become. blank630x20

This beautiful illuminated  upcycled decor light was made from the covers on an old ceiling fan that we had replaced in our living room.  I try to look past what something is to what it can be and this was about the easiest upcycled item I’ve ever done. I’m not sure it even fits that definition as it still basically does the same thing… covers a light. I used battery operated tea lights for mine that are on a timer so they are hands off until I need to replace the batteries. If you’d like some other twinkly room lighting ideas check out our Coffee Filter Twinkle Light Filters  or our DIY Twinkle Light Jars.

Upcycled Illuminated Decor Supplies

Note on these specific tea lights: I’ve not had mine long enough to determine the usage on these specific lights  but from what I read it will be about two to three months if they are kept on the timer 24/7.  The way the timer works is you turn them on at the time you want them to stay lit for 6 hours. They will then auto shut off for 18 hours and come on again the next day.

This is a shot of the ceiling fan before we moved into the home. It was a nice one but still dated so we know it would eventually be replaced.

  • Wood slice discs. About 1/2″ thick cut from tree branch. (approx 3 to 4″ in diameter) If you don’t have a way to cut any you can find them on eBay and Etsy.
  • Chalk paint
  • Raffia
  • Hot glue gun
  • Silk flowers etc.

Make a Countdown For All Occasions!

Decorate your countdown however you like to match the occasion. I made a general one for any occasion and then one for the Christmas holidays.  Make sure to put on TWO coats of chalkboard paint, allowing it to dry in between. It’s best to let the last coat dry overnight before use.

You can make these elegant and simple Christmas Spiders from bells and pipe cleaners. Download the printable story poem tags and give as gifts or ornaments. blank630x20

This Christmas Spider idea comes from back in the 90s when I made them as holiday gifts. I’m not sure where it originated but there were various stories that went with it. Being someone who loves to write poems I wrote one with some of the same concepts as the stories so it could be attached to the spiders.   A tree filled with these for ornaments would be gorgeous and quite the conversation piece!

Please enjoy this idea and the free poem download that you can print and attach to your spiders for giving as gifts.

Christmas Spider Supplies

  • 2 jingle bells of different sizes for each spider. Gold or silver.  I used  size 1 1/4″  and 1/2″  gold.  1″ would also work for the body.  ( Too small of bells make it too hard to put the pipe cleaners into them. )
  • 12″ pipe cleaners i.e. Chenille stems, gold or color of choice. 2 per spider.
  • Tiny ribbon for bows.
  • Hot glue gun for head bell if desired. (Or any thick glue that will hold well.)
  • Very thin wire (Optional for tying bells together rather than gluing. )
  • Downloadable poem tags printed on cardstock.

NOTE: The body works best with 1″ or 1 1/4″ bells. Smaller bells for the body will not hold the 4 pipe cleaners. The head can be 1/2″ or something close to that.  You can glue the head on. Hot glue will not hold as well as epoxy or tying them on with wire or even string.
