Use our free pattern to cut the back piece of your disc.Recycle CDs and DVDs into these useful and pretty wall pouches! They're also a great way to use up scraps of fabric and have a multitude of fun uses.blank630x20

Following the circle of the disk dab on hot glue around the back edge and wrap your material around carefully. We suggest doing it on 1 to 2 inch intervals then going back around and pulling down the unglued sections to help give a smooth edge. Recycle CDs and DVDs into these useful and pretty wall pouches! Take a piece of felt that will be the pouch and set it in place. We used pinking shears on the top edge. You want to allow for the pouch to stick out a little. World Clock Supplies

  • CD or DVD
  • Printed clock face (FREE DOWNLOAD BELOW)
  • Small clock mechanism. I used this one.
  • Spray adhesive or glue to glue clock face onto CD.
  • Clear Spray (fixing agent so the ink won’t run if you use Mod Podge”
  • Mod Podge for sealing (optional)
  • Spray paint (optional for back of disc)

Other Clock Mechanisms that might work according to the details, though I’ve not used these personally. Double check things before purchasing. Many come with a hanging piece so the clock can be placed on the wall.

NOTE ON CLOCK MECHANISMS: If you purchase your own you must check to make sure it will fit your CD and that the hands are the right size. (Second hands are usually super thin and you could actually trim them with scissors.) Clock mechanisms come in a huge variety of sizes and only a certain size will work for your CD clock.  The largest hand can generally not be longer than 2 1/4″ (Seconds hands tend to be really long and you can opt to leave that hand off if you like.) Also, the thread sections come in different lengths and will stick out in front of your CD because it is so thin. I didn’t find that to be a huge problem. I generally painted the threads to match, if needed.

How to Print

Some printers will adjust a pdf to ‘fit to page”.  If yours does that your clock face might be a tiny bit too small, showing a sliver of the CD around the edge. To correct this, when you go to print your sheet change the printer settings as shown. (Yours will look different but you should still have this setting.) Another option is to spray paint the front of your CD or DVD so that if the edge does show, it doesn’t matter. It will just have a nice border. P.S. It’s a good idea to print a fast “draft” quality of your template to make sure it will fit correctly. That way you don’t waste ink.

How To Bend CDs/DVDs

NOTES: Use CDs that have no paper or ink on them. The candle wick needs to be long so it gives a high flame. You may want to do this outside as there will be a small amount of odor. The soot wipes off with a tissue!

Napkin Holder Instructions

Mark two of your CD or DVDs about 1.5″ in from an end.  If you mark it further in than that then normal napkins will not stand up in it easily.  After you mark your CDs bend them as instructed above using a candle.

Custom Photo Book Supplies

  • Photos. These can be any size depending on the type of book you make. For ones that cover the full CD you’ll need 5x7s.
  • CDs or DVDs
  • Glue to affix photos and graphics. I used spray glue for the full size photos.
  • Small ball chain
  • Drill
  • Decor beads etc.

blank630x20

Instructions

You can trace the CD onto your photos and then cut them out or you can also hold the CD onto a photo and carefully cut around it.  For one of my custom photo books I used my printer to print medium quality black and white photos of Roy and I onto normal printer paper. (Next time I’d use cardstock.) Then I cut the photos out along with some sayings and quotes I found.  I used spray glue to attach my photos but any glue will work. After attaching your photos you can now drill a hole large enough to fit your chain through into the CDs. You can do more than one at a time, just be careful!

I could have just used a chain to attach them but I found some heart beads I thought would work nice for this book. I had white ones but needed a black one. I stuck one onto a wood skewer and spray painted it. Then I colored another one with a black Sharpie marker. I actually liked the look of that one better and used it. Print out your patterns and cut them carefully. Glue the emojis on to CDs.  Paint your tongue depressors if desired and glue them onto your CD putting them at least 1/3rd the way into the CD so they are sturdy. You can cut two of each image and glue one to the back of your fan too so it’s two sided. Only use one CD however as using two will make it too heavy.

TWO WAYS TO DISPLAY SATURN MODEL:  Place a small metal eyelet hook in the top and use fishing line to hang it. Or you can use any small piece of wood as a base. Drill a hole in it to fit a small wooden dowel than push your Saturn down onto the dowel. Both methods are shown below.

DIY Saturn - How To Display

You can easily attach some fishing line to your planet for hanging.

This sparkly and gorgeous Saturn is made from a foam ball and a CD. How cool is that? If you're a fan of the cosmos you can easily see how you could make an entire universe this way! Saturn is extra cool though... due to the ring and all. It can be hung or placed on a simple wood stand as shown.

CD DVD Bird Feeders DIYblank630x20

Who doesn’t have old CDs or DVDs lying around? We’ve got a great upcycle way for our feathered friends to have yummy stuff to eat.  There are two different types of feeders you can make and we personally tested both types. The birds were thrilled!blank

blank630x20Supplies Needed

  • 1 CD or DVD
  • Masking Tape / Brown paint (tree feeder)
  • Paint if desired.
  • Rope 3/8″ or 1/2″ (tree feeder)
  • Plastic cup. Shorter type
  • Small bit of Washi tape
  • Clear boondoggle, fishing line or anything to hang it with.(hanging feeder)
  • Fake leaves (hanging feeder)
  • Hot Glue
  • Drill
  • Nail (tree feeder)
  • X-acto Knife
  • Bird seed

Instructions : Feeder #1

You can finish your CD however you like. Paint it or even leave it blank so it’s shiny and attracts the bird’s attention. I decided to give mine a wood like finish.

  1. Tear small pieces of masking tape and cover it with them, overlapping.
  2. Cover over with a thin layer of brown acrylic paint.
  3. Cut out half the bottom of your cup.
  4. Hot glue the cup on.
  5. Add rope trim.
  6. Drill a hole in the edge.
  7. Add a small strip of Washi tape over the edge of the perch area.
  8. Fill with bird seed and nail to a tree.

Supply List

  • CD’s or DVD’s, Used or New
  • Plastic Cups  (9 oz clear. Get the shorter type)
  • Dowels   7/8th  x  36″
  • Fine sand paper (optional but helps paint stick)

  • Clear gloss coating for protection. (optional)
  • Ric Rac that matches.
  • Glue Gun

Visual Instructions

Lightly sand the CD’s. This helps the paint stick. CD Treat Holder DIYblank
Spray paint colors of choice. I just did the tops but you can do both sides if desired.  You can also add a clear protective coating on top after the spray paint dries to make them last longer.

Attach ric rac using a thin line of hot glue. Center the ric rac on the edge of the disc.

3blank
Attach the dowel (which can be painted if desired) by using a huge blob of hot glue. The glue will go through the CD center at which point you quickly place the cup over the hole onto the glue that has bled through. Again, use a large amount! The 5/8″ dowel allows the CD and cup to sit very securely if enough glue is used.

CD Treat Holder DIYblank
This shows treat holders without the dowel attached yet.  I did put a little glue on the bottom of the cups to attach them before attaching the dowel. The above method works well also with no pre-gluing.

CD Treat Holder DIYblank

The dowel can be stuck into the ground if the ground is soft. My ground was a bit hard so I used a hammer and a plain dowel to make a hole first. You can also whittle the end of your dowel to a point if desired to help with insertion.

bracelent.stand.small This upcycle  jewelry stand is made from a plastic CD holder that comes with every stack of 100 count CDs or DVDs. Pretty clever huh?  It also uses a small (as in circumference) tube from a roll of foil.  A little paint, paper and felt and you’ve got a beautiful way to display your jewelry!   I’ve also included a version at the very bottom that uses the small tubes and a plastic cup rather than the CD spool just in case you don’t have one of those lying around. Either choice will make a lovely stand and no one will guess what it’s made from after your finished!

Supplies Used

  • Plastic CD holder from a 100 stack.
  • Felt for bottom of CD holder.
  • Small sturdy cardboard tube from foil. These are not the typical tubes but smaller and very firm.
  • Paint, Ribbon, paper, etc for decorating your stand.
  • Plastic cup. (Another option for your jewelry holder that doesn’t require a  CD holder.)

You need an empty one of these spray painted your choice of color.

A Reynolds foil roll insert tube is small in circumference and very thick. Wrap it with paper that matches your base color. You can also paint it or use material, ribbon or contact paper to cover it. Whatever you have on hand!

Cut some felt to go in the bottom. You can use a CD as a template but you must cut the felt about 1/2″ larger than the CD.

Make beautiful DIY candle holders from old CDs or DVDs. All you need is a little spray paint, some ribbon and artificial flowers. Great for any season! blank630x20These DIY candle holders are great if you need to grab something quick to set a candle on.  However, with a little paint and a few extras they can be turned into beautiful upcycle decor items for any season!  We made three different examples using just what we had on hand. There’s one for Autumn, Christmas and Spring / Summer.   Once you have the supplies and have painted your disc it takes 5 minutes to put them together.

DIY Candle Holders from CDs and DVDs fSupplies Needed

IMPORTANT: When you add artificial flowers, ribbon and other items, the candles are to be used as decorations only. You also won’t be able to use hot glue on the candle itself, for obvious reasons. See our directions for how we attached our decorations.

  • CDs or DVDs. Used or new.
  • Spray paint.
  • Artificial flowers, ribbon etc.
  • Foil disc for under center of candle over the hole.
  • Glue

blank.640x25

Special Notes

If you’re going to use the CD or DVD to hold a candle you will light, cover the center hole with a bit of foil because you don’t want wax accidentally leaking through.  Again, this is the for the non-decorated versions. If you decorate them, don’t light them as its a fire hazard. Make beautiful DIY candle holders from old CDs or DVDs. All you need is a little spray paint, some ribbon and artificial flowers. Great for any season!blank630x20

If your using your candle as a decoration you can’t hot glue it to the disc unless the candle has paper on the bottom of it. You can use other types of glue to attach it also.

Fall DIY Candle Holders

Spray paint either side of your CD.   Add your decorations keeping in mind you can’t use hot glue on the candle itself.  I tied raffia around the candle and affixed any foliage to the disc itself.

Christmas DIY Candle Holders

I spray painted this CD gold and tied a small strand of pip berries around it twice. I then glued my gold sprigs on the CD itself at the base of the candle and then glued a gold bow over the center of them. Simple yet elegant.

Spring DIY Candle Holders

I spray painted my disk a teal color.  (Remember to add a circle of foil over the hole before sitting your candle on it. )  Then I glued some daisies on the CD at the bottom of the candle. Simple and pretty.

Make a line where you want to bend the CD. I make mine a little over half way.  Exactness is not necessary here.

CD Bookends Tutorial-5

blank630x20

Video Directions

The key is to make sure you move the CD or DVD over the flame in the exact spot you want it to bend. It can barely touch the flame. Make about 1 second swipes. It takes about 30 seconds to get hot enough to bend. Overbend it and then adjust it back quickly to where you want it. After it cools the soot on the back wipes right off.
