You can use a regular spray bottle or an atomizer for your cleansing spray. The difference is that an atomizer puts out an extra fine mist which some prefer.

  • 20 drops of each essential oil you choose. Remember, you can just use one if desired!
  • 4 oz small Spray bottle or atomizer (An atomizer is simply a spray bottle made to spray an extra fine mist.)
  • Distilled water, 4 oz.

Fill spray bottle with distilled water and add oil or oils of choice. Shake gently to mix.

If you use a larger or smaller bottle simply adjust the amounts above. These are estimates. You can’t do this wrong. If you feel you want more oil in your spray, use it! You could also use less if desired. 20 drops is simply an average.

Read our article on smudging here which details how to do it and it’s purpose. There is a free printable on that page with instructions. You use the exact same method for this smokeless smudging as you would use for the regular herbs.

Water & Oil Choices

Distilled water is typically used for things of this nature because it has no impurities. Regular tap water has things in it that will cause the water to go putrid over time. Boiled water works well also, let it cool before using.

There are a variety of brands of essential oils available. As far as aroma goes the inexpensive one’s work very well. High quality oils tend to work better for illnesses, however, purchase what you can afford.  I’ve used Doterra brand for my high end healing but for things such as this I’ve also used Plant Therapy brand as they are much less expensive and have great reviews. I’ve also used other brands in a pinch.

For the purpose of this spray there are a variety of oils you can choose from, all of which will remove odors and freshen the air.  They have added spiritual and energy benefits too, which I will list below.

Sage – for clearing and purifying a space. I’ve used this one alone for a “Smokeless Smudging” spray.

Lavender – for disinfecting, purifying, and promoting relaxation.

Rosemary – for protecting and detoxifying

Frankincense – This is one of the most powerful oils for healing which is why it tends to cost more. It can not only kill bacteria and fungus in the air but it’s a strong negative energy remover.

Lemon – Another oil that is anti-microbial and also increases positive energy in a space.

Cypress – For breaking up super stagnant energy and creating “flow”.  Great if you’ve moved into a home that has been previously occupied.

Benefits

Essential oils are perfect for removing odors and stale air and they do so without chemicals. It’s proven that certain odors affect our moods. Essential oils are of such concentrated quality they do this wonderfully.  Many of them are also germ killers despite being completely safe for our bodies. Use this room spray a lot during cold season!

We talked about this in our Smudging Post which is a Native American ritual many use to clear their homes of negative energy. The idea behind this is that when a negative event occurs in a home it leaves an energetic imprint that lingers.  Try to recall a time when you walked into an area and just had a bad feeling but didn’t know why. These left over vibrations can be cleared out in a variety of ways and smudging is one of them. This is because of the power of herbs themselves and the oils made from them. We smudge any home we move into to remove any lasting energy from the previous owners. This is a simple concept to test. The next time there is an argument or unpleasant event that happens in your home that causes strong emotions, use this spray and see if you can feel the difference.

How to Use

Use the room spray as much and whenever you want.

  1. Hi Nancy! This is such a great post. I am a big fan of smudging, but sometimes I do think it gets a little too smoky, especially for my partner who is asthmatic. This room spray is a great alternative!
